The History Channel gives considerable credit for the invention of Buffalo Wings to a Black restauranteur named John Young, who opened Wings and Things in Buffalo, New York, rather than to the Bellissimo family.

“I was selling 5,000 pounds of chicken wings in 1962,” Young told The Courier-Express in a 1981 article. “Mr. Bellissimo used to come into my place and eat my chicken wings.”

The Food that Built America episode also gives a lot of credit for chicken wing popularity to Hooter's.

My friends have a band headquartered in Saratoga Springs, NY called Sirsy...a wife/husband team that rocks, she on the drums/vocals, he on the guitar. She busts out the flute for multiple songs.

They hit the road in their van twice a year tho, and play all over, including CA. Check them out...one of their songs was featured on Shameless, and they get airtime in the 518. Wonder if Jim Knowlton ever saw them when he was at RPI....

I had an unhappy experience with an unsubscribe request.

A Big Give email inspired me to unsubscribe. I'm not feeling charitable in light of the state of the Athletic Department and what I feel is Chancellor Christ's (and the administration's) indifference towards revenue sports.

Therefore, I chose to unsubscribe. Then they wanted to know why. I chose Other. When you choose Other, the form asks for your reason, to which I tried responding, "Cal’s administration and Athletic Dept. leadership has demonstrated that athletics is irrelevant to the University."

That's 115 characters, including spaces. The form flashed that the response contained an invalid field length or some such nonsense. So, I made it valid. I simply responded, "Fuck off."

I really don't like that response, either. So I wrote to updates@go.calbears.com to explain my terse and vulgar response. And now I'm still grumpy because I dislike being nasty and confrontational.

Yes, I've had my coffee.

Has Mark Fox been fired yet?

Expand full comment
Mar 9, 2023·edited Mar 9, 2023

I'll be shocked if it's today, and surprised if it is even tomorrow.

Knowlton is useless and does nothing with urgency. If he didn't fire him during this season, he is clearly not in a rush. He'll take time to evaluate the program, as he says....hopefully by next week.

But the firing is only the first step....Knowlton has to have some plan in place, otherwise the disaster will likely continue.

****UPDATED****

Happy to be shocked!!

Expand full comment

Are you shocked?

Expand full comment

I actually am. I think so little of Knowlton and while I hoped he would, I honestly did not expect him to actually pull the plug so soon, given that he let him hang around all season. Glad he did and it is a good start, but again, he is so overmatched in his current position that I still remain skeptical.

Expand full comment

I can't remember if there was financial incentive to wait until the end of the season. Anyone remember what his contract said?

Expand full comment

Maybe not in Fox's contract, but hiring someone mid season means you have to hire and pay a new coach

Expand full comment
Mar 10, 2023·edited Mar 10, 2023

I don't believe so, no. The contract he signed in 2019 stipulated that Fox would be paid a base salary of $275,000 per year, plus a talent fee.

Year One: $1.5 million

Year Two: $1.575 million

Year Three: $1.65 million

Year Four: $1.725 million

Year Five: $1.8 million

If Fox is terminated without cause, here’s how much the university will owe him:

Year One: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the remainder of the contract year in which the termination occurs.

Year Two: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Three: 75% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Four: 50% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Five: 25% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Any way you slice it, this looks like year 4, whether that was December 2022, January 2023 or March 2023...

So it appears to be a buyout of 50% of $1.8M, or $900K, whenever it was done, UNLESS year 5 started when the 2022-2023 season ended, which I do not think is how they work it.

I said I thought they should do a G5 up and comer like Ben Braun was.

First year they hadn't used their BB tickets for various reasons. Said next year they'll start going again but I got first dibs on the tickets they couldn't go to. I said this was the first year I didn't go to any games since moving back and I was OK with that. Didn't miss much.
