More car woes

After the skylight fell on my car in January, I delayed the decision on whether or not to get another car. This week, I'm borrowing my dad's car while I dogsit. Well...this morning, I discovered that the catalytic converter is gone.

Blergh.

Expand full comment

argh - that's crappy!

Expand full comment

So sorry to hear! My cat converter was stolen last year. It happens so much now, makes me mad at the world.

My brother has a vacation condo in Hawaii and one of the last times he got there he discovered his was gone. It definitely happens all over the place.

Yeah, definitely shitty. And I feel worse that it's my dad's car!

Daylight Saving Time

Expand full comment
Mar 10, 2023·edited Mar 10, 2023Liked by Berkelium97

...starts on Sunday, March 12, technically at 2:00 AM, Standard Time becoming 3:00 AM Daylight Time. Yup, there's our lost hour.

Spring forward, as the saying goes.

My tips for adjusting -

(1) Stay as close as possible to your usual weekday sleep routine this weekend.Try to avoid late nights if you typically rise earlier during your work week.

(2a) avoid alcohol as much as possible; limit intake if avoidance won't work. Alcohol tends to disrupt sleep patterns.

(2b) if you drink caffeine regularly, limit your intake in the afternoons until returning to work. Cut it out entirely in the evenings, if possible, until returning to work. The idea is to ease the transition to your work routine under DST.

(3) find a way to wind down a little earlier on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I really wish we'd end this nonsense of changing clocks twice a year. I advocate year-round standard time (I realize Scootie doesn't like this, at all. Sorry, Scootie). But I even am okay with going to year-round DST if only because I believe it will put people off that idea and lend support to year-round standard time. My sentiment - get on with it, already!

Expand full comment
author

I'm also in favor of picking one and sticking with it. I'd rather keep standard time because I'm not keen on 8:30am sunrises in December.

Expand full comment

Absolutely agree. 8:30 AM sunrises in December and January are why I think year-round DST is a self-defeating proposition.

Silicon Valley Bank lost about 60% of its market cap yesterday after funding talks collapsed, the bank was shut down, and the gave its depositors no later than Monday to withdraw funds.

No, accounts are frozen, insured deposits only will be available Monday. Uninsured deposits get a receiver’s certificate

By the way, when was there last a bank run like this? I can’t even remember. Even WaMu wasn’t a bank run. The FDIC announced the receivership and sale on same day. This was like an 1800s style panic - feds had no notion of having to step in until yesterday I think.

Indy Mac, WaMu - two big booms, Wachovia - smaller but significant.

SVB - waiting to witness the fallout. A lot of techies didn't get paychecks on Friday.

good thing we had that discussion of hangover foods since i have one thing morning! without having to go out somewhere special, i had some spicy sausage and eggs.

I had to find a news story about this. I grew up above 580 near 35th and couldn't imagine that happening. Apparently a storm drain problem was the issue. I'm old enough to remember when they were building 580 and my grandfather would tell me to go play on the freeway.

One supposes lame beats flooding of any sort. Thrre are multiple examples of flooding in Northern California, especially in Sonoma and Santa Cruz counties.

In Oakland, a portion of a hillside denuded by fire last year slid onto westbound I-580 north of the junction with Hwy 13. Consequently, the roadway flooded closing the freeway in both directions. Video of the resulting pond shows ducks paddling about.

Expand full comment

Yes and no - obviously flooding is bad, but we're running low so far this year on precipitation. I'm not going to cry the blues over rainfall on a board heavily populated by California residents and yet dry pre-spring weather isn't usually a plus here
