Regarding that map...I live in Portugal and typically eat dinner around 7:30-8:00. Most restaurants open 7:00-7:30. I'm told that we're on the early side and 8:30 is a more typical dinner time here. Also, while I've never eaten in a private home in Spain, on several occasions I've had to wait until 10:00 for a restaurant to open for dinner.
Where in Portugal? My wife is Portuguese (from the Azores) and we went there for part of our honeymoon. We started in Porto and drove down to Lisbon before flying to the islands. We loved it there! Only issue is that Lisbon was one of the most difficult places I've ever driven.

We had an impromptu trip to Porto back in 2013 (I think), my wife's family was living in Geneva for several years and on an extended visit we checked EasyJet for cheap flights to somewhere/anywhere in Europe. Porto won out with $39 flights each way. We had a blast walking the city, visiting museums and dining on the riverbank. We also quickly learned that Spanish is not an acceptable replacement for Portuguese from our first cab driver. Porto was never high on my travel list but the three day trip ended up being the highlight of our vacation.
I don’t have anything against Lisbon, it’s not like any of this is informed by having visited. The appeal of Coimbra is partly that it’s a little further inland (warmer), partly that it’s a university town, partly the proximity to Serra de Estrela national park or the coast, and relative ease of access to Porto and the Peneda Geres national forest. I have become moderately obsessed with the idea of retiring to Coimbra, an idea which holds zero appeal to the missus, so I’m not holding my breath.
