i worked at SSL (Space Sciences Lab) at the very top of the hill, even above Lawrence Hall of Science.

the guy who was the lab director at the time, recently passed away.

https://physics.berkeley.edu/news-events/news/20220126/remembering-p-buford-price-1932-2021

he was my thesis advisor's thesis advisor. so i guess that makes him my grandfather in the world of academic family trees.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I don't typically like the whole academic family tree name just because how incestuous it often gets.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

this is a good point. i suppose that is one of the main problems w/ academics and lack of diversity

Glad to see our grad transfer from MIT, Tommy Hannan, had a clean outing on the mound. I'm not sure if it's one thing or two separate things that's mentioned in his Cal bio as "conducted computer science research at Caltech and Driveline Baseball".

Best lunch: leftover fried chicken thighs on a brioche bun with a little red onions, roasted bell peppers, rocket & EVOO and some secret sauce.

Ruey Yen's avatar

How do you reheat leftover fried chicken?

Cugel's avatar

In the oven, on a wire rack. Also not fried like KFC, more breaded and pan fried.

I just got a notice from Costco that the Airborne bottle of gummies I bought is being recalled because it is possible for pressure to build up before first open and the underlying seal can pop up with force.

Huh?

There is a petition to recall all five BOS members here in my county, for among other things, "crimes against humanity" you know, for such things as the abuse school-aged children have suffered over mask mandates.

DC Trojan's avatar

One way among many you can tell I’m old is that I find myself thinking “words mean things” when people bandy about phrases like “crimes against humanity.”

started season 5 of Last Kingdom last night. forgot how good this was.

someone was saying they thought Last Kingdom was a lesser version The Vikings. i would have said the opposite, even though i like them both. i eventually gave up on Vikings ..

Ruey Yen's avatar

My only complaint about The Last Kingdom is that I sometimes wonder how different the show might feel if I was watching it week-to-week like Game of Thrones. There are times when something big happened and I'm already on to "I'm Uhtred, son of Uhtred" and the next episode.

Fire Starkey's avatar

for the readers out there, the book series the show is based on is fantastic, 13+ books last I saw. Bernard Cornwell is a brilliant historical fiction/older and ancient wars writer

DC Trojan's avatar

He can spin a good yarn for sure

Peetyjay's avatar

I like both though Vikings did get a bit repetitive toward the end and the loss of the most compelling and interesting characters--Ragnar, Athelstan, and Floki,--didn't help. Ivar kept things interesting enough for me to stay until the end.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The Last Kingdom is pure gold.

Target each night is 7:30. Dessert around 9. In bed for reading/music at 10. Asleep by 11.

Ruey Yen's avatar

No set time...it really depends on how late I had my lunch and how much snacks I have had throughout the day. The most common time is probably around 8:30 recently.

SGBear's avatar

My kid worked at an Indian restaurant over the summer in a town that is about 50% Indian. The restaurant would have no customers until about 8pm and then get busy at about 9pm, essentially right before closing time. The owner didn't keep it open later because he couldn't staff it.

Berkelium97's avatar

Since we both work from home and wrap up work around 5, we usually have dinner around 6.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

730p is the default dinner time at the house unless someone has a constraint. i would probably eat a bit later if it wasnt for everyone else in the family.

i dont even mind the late night dining that you see in Europe, 900p+

Hanover Fiste's avatar

Regarding that map...I live in Portugal and typically eat dinner around 7:30-8:00. Most restaurants open 7:00-7:30. I'm told that we're on the early side and 8:30 is a more typical dinner time here. Also, while I've never eaten in a private home in Spain, on several occasions I've had to wait until 10:00 for a restaurant to open for dinner.

Tangtpt's avatar

Where in Portugal? My wife is Portuguese (from the Azores) and we went there for part of our honeymoon. We started in Porto and drove down to Lisbon before flying to the islands. We loved it there! Only issue is that Lisbon was one of the most difficult places I've ever driven.

Hanover Fiste's avatar

Lisbon. Restelo, to be precise. My wife's also from here, but she taught at Cal for six years. I guess I've gotten used to driving here, though I hate looking for street parking.

heyalumnigo's avatar

We were supposed to have an event in Lisbon 3/2020, then postponed to 3/2021. Unfortunately it looks like they haven't rescheduled Lisbon this year and maybe not next year. Which is unfortunate because I was really looking forward to visiting.

We had an impromptu trip to Porto back in 2013 (I think), my wife's family was living in Geneva for several years and on an extended visit we checked EasyJet for cheap flights to somewhere/anywhere in Europe. Porto won out with $39 flights each way. We had a blast walking the city, visiting museums and dining on the riverbank. We also quickly learned that Spanish is not an acceptable replacement for Portuguese from our first cab driver. Porto was never high on my travel list but the three day trip ended up being the highlight of our vacation.

DC Trojan's avatar

I have become moderately obsessed with the idea of retiring to Coimbra, an idea which holds zero appeal to the missus, so I’m not holding my breath.

Cugel's avatar

Why pray tell? I mean why there and not Lisbon?

DC Trojan's avatar

I don’t have anything against Lisbon, it’s not like any of this is informed by having visited. The appeal of Coimbra is partly that it’s a little further inland (warmer), partly that it’s a university town, partly the proximity to Serra de Estrela national park or the coast, and relative ease of access to Porto and the Peneda Geres national forest. It’s not as dramatic as a lot of the the Spanish interior, but it looks like there’s a lot of good hiking to be done.

sycasey's avatar

Interesting how dinner time seems to get later on that map the closer you get to the equator. Places with more daylight eat later.

Cugel's avatar

Heh, I was thinking the same thing, but the other way.

Nine people killed in crash involving University of the Southwest golf teams

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/33516134/multiple-dead-crash-involving-university-southwest-golf-team

Nine people died in a fiery, head-on collision in West Texas, including six students and a coach from a New Mexico university who were returning home from a golf tournament, authorities said.

Sgt. Steven Blanco of the Texas Department of Public Safety said a pickup truck crossed the center line of a highway Tuesday night and crashed into a vehicle carrying members of the University of the Southwest men's and women's golf teams. They had been returning from a tournament in Midland, Texas.

Blanco said six students were killed, along with a faculty member. He said two students were taken by helicopter to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition.

Hard to make heads or tails of her tenure at Cal. On one hand she hired Monty and kept Tedford happy till she had to cut his throat. On the other hand, there was the stadium financing fiasco (which was not entirely her fault) and Sonny. The last part was viewed as such a wild swing that Wilton basically made the Cuonzo hire above her.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

She got Cuonzo, which was huge at the time. I remember the "How you like me now?" memes when it occurred.

PawlOski's avatar

That was a huge and shockingly un-Cal like move. The rumor at the time was that Wilton made that hire, and not Barbour. She got sidelined. Wilton was not pleased with the Dykes hire and I think she was circulating around DeCuire -- at least that's how I remember it. If only we were as ambitious and proactive now.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Ah, I hadn't heard that rumor. Though it makes sense. She left Cal within a few months after that.
