OSKI DISCIPLE’S TRIVA FUN, A DAILY DBD FEATURE

Samuel Beckett wrote a never performed sequel to “Waiting for Godot” entitled, “Godot Finally Arrives, Was Stuck in Traffic.”

(All trivia verified by the International Trivia Foundation.)

Waiting for Godot is one of the funnier things ever written/staged/performed. We saw it performed in NYC a while back (2014) w/ Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan. Was fantastic.

You just me made jealous. Would have loved to have seen that production.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i had to look up date. i would not have guessed it was 10 years ago. seems much more recent. however coronavirus times put a big damper on all of that ..

Waiting for Guffman is a Christopher Guest riff on Waiting for Godot. Still funny.

Mexico says they won't accept deported citizens sent back by the State of Texas after SCOTUS rules that Texas can enforce a state rule, for now. I think Mexico is still bitter over Tyler's annexation in 1845.

But then the 5th circuit suspended the law so we're back to Texas not having a Foreign Policy...

See? Despite what his critics say, James Harden does play defense.

This story is more interesting than that. Initially Ohtani and his translator said that the money was a loan from Shohei to help his friend cover his gambling debts. Now (after lawyers got involved) they insist it was a theft.

Hmmmmmm.

FiatSlug's avatar

"Frank, Sgt. Kimball lost $300 playing poker last night."

"Gambling is forbidden on this base. There is no gambling. Therefore, the money was stolen."

"Right, Frank."

Justbear's avatar

Most likely Shohei paid back Ippei's debts knowing it was for gambling. Shohei wanted to help Ippei, and get it over with by paying everything. He probably didn't know it was illegal. Or he may have.

Shohei's lawyers doesn't think it's for his benefit to be involved with Ippei and his gambling in any way, so they are denying any involvement and now Ippei changed his statement too, saying he stole money and Shohei didn't know anything about it.

Maybe, but it seems pretty fishy and will be investigated for sure, so I think this is just the beginning here.

If this had happened to a utility infielder on the Pirates, the guy would be immediately suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Justbear's avatar

Or even Machado, he would be suspended immediately too lol

Dude!!!! The story is so obviously BS. Ohtani totally placed those bets through his interpreter. How wild that Yamamoto lays an egg and Ohtani becomes Pete Rose / Shoeless Joe all in one day. The Giants fans on here must be happy!

sycasey's avatar

Who knew Shohei Ohtani would help Pete Rose get into the Hall of Fame!

ICYMI: The regular season started early for the Dodgers & Padres as their 2-game series in Seoul counts for the regular season. The Dodger's 12-year $325m new pitcher Yamamoto premiered last night. He only lasted one inning before getting pulled with a 45.00 ERA. Padres needed the five runs because they only won by four, 15-11. They split the series.

Portland (ME) Sea Dogs are the Red Sox's AA affiliate. Charleston (SC) River Dogs are TB Ray's A affiliate. Sea Dogs are seals. Despite their logo being an actual canine, a "river dog" in Charlestonian parlance is a rat. Charleston is low country and infamous for its rat population.

Warrriors even home record at 18-18.

a year after being inexplicably bad on the road, they have a better road record than at home!

heyalumnigo's avatar

Memphis loves to shoot 3s but they aren't very good at it. Warriors seem to be very streaky.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

not that i think the W's have any really shot deep into the playoffs. it seems, however, that playing OKC instead of Denver would be their only really hope of getting past first round.

so either 7 or 8 seed - after play in games - depending on how rest of season works out.

Death & Other Details (S1 Hulu 17/19 WB). Not perfect, but it's such a sparkling little gem of a series. Really great writing and I rarely gush about technical stuff - but blocking, cinematography, and visual effects were unique, clever, and well used. I highly recommend watching. It's already been renewed for S2.

Somebody Feed Phil (Netflix 18/19): This is a reality food travel series. The host, Phil Rosenthal, was one of the creators of Everybody Loves Raymond. This show just makes me and my family happy. There is absolutely no controversy about it at all. We watched the first three episodes (Bangkok, Saigon, Tel Aviv) of season 1 (there are 7 seasons) and his joy of exploration and genuineness on the screen is infectious. When he enjoys a new food, his face lights up with what appears to be genuine joy. His interactions with his tour guides and people he meets on the street make me want to go and do what he is doing. I love traveling, and this show makes me want to travel more.

Looks like there'll be no preview of tonight's women's basketball game (WBIT vs. Hawaii 7:00 at Haas) on the main page. I swear there's been more written on WFC about FSU vs. the ACC than about Cal's women's hoops team.
