Rep. Mike Gallagher to resign in April, narrowing House GOP vote margin to 1

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/22/mike-gallagher-republican-leaving-house/

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) announced Friday he will resign effective April 19, leaving the slim House GOP majority with a one-vote margin that will make it even harder to pass legislation.

Under Wisconsin law, Gallagher’s seat is likely to remain vacant until January, with the November general election to determine who wins his seat.

When Gallagher leaves, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will be able to suffer only one defection from his side on party-line votes. The realities of the thin majority were on full display earlier Friday, as the House passed a $1.2 trillion spending bill by a narrow margin.

But yes! The Ohtani stuff seems obviously ridiculous. I think he most likely used his buddy to place bets for him, but will hard to prove without some sort of arm of the government getting interested and subpoenaing his texts, WhatsApp, etc. I suppose it is possible that he was just covering for his buddy also, but I dunno, would probably not wire directly out of his own account if that was the situation

Even the Japanese fans are getting suspicious of Shohei right now. We'll see if more stories come out, but at the moment it looks like he's free to play. If the Dodgers ever regret signing Shohei to a huge contract, then they might stop protecting Shohei and that would be interesting.

Time for the Seiya Suzuki to shine as the new superstar.

I concur that Ohtani is probably more deeply involved than first reports indicate. I also think MLB knows more than they are letting on at the moment.

Bear sightings....Sandy Barbour was sitting courtside at last night's women's b-ball game. After years of Knowlton she seems like the greatest athletic director of all time. Knowlton appeared briefly at the game. He looked around and left. He didn't have his usual dopey grin. Maybe he knows the gig is up. Also at the game was Ron Rivera whose wife played b-ball at Cal.

Is it a coincidence that Barbour and Rivera are in town and that Knowlton is looking so glum?

The California football team's annual Pro Day featured the usual strong performances by former Golden Bears trying to improve their pro football stock in front of scouts from approximately 20 NFL teams, as well as a few surprises including inside linebacker Jackson Sirmon's long snapping session.

"It's really just something to add value," said Sirmon about his long snapping. "If I can play linebacker, do special teams and long snap it's just something that teams might find useful."
