Who else tore their achilles (I think) playing BB last night? Just me?

Going to the orthopedic surgeon to get it checked out this afternoon.

Standardized testing: was it a boon or bane for your college applications?

Expand full comment
Mar 23, 2023·edited Mar 23, 2023

generally a boon but not for the obvious reasons

my SAT testing journey started in 7th grade when my mom insisted to the middle school that i be allowed to take the SATs to qualify for various honors programs and academic summer schools.

i probably took the SATs about 7-8 times total, but the early years resulted in getting into those academic summer schools (one at Berkeley in 7th and 8th grades) and i ended up being 2.5 yrs ahead of the normal math sequence as a result.

Minor boon. Frankly, I think the biggest contributor to me getting accepted was that I applied to the Forestry College

Boon. My GPA wasn't great (at least compared to the average GPA of accepted students), but my SATs definitely helped offset that.

I don't remember if my GREs helped or hurt for grad school, but grad school applications are full of weird idiosyncrasies (like if the lab you're interested in joining had room and funding during that cycle).

Expand full comment

Boon. SAT was pretty high, also took the GRE and then GMAT before biz school. Since I didn't go to grad school in the Humanities/Classics the GRE was superfluous.

Bane. Killed me for both college and law school, tho in hindsight, I should’ve gone the JC route, played ball & then transferred to a 4-yr school…

As long as Knowlton makes a MBB good hire, I’ll be fine…

Nearly 80 degrees - sunny and beautiful.

Tomorrow, high of 82 low of 72 in Lima, Peru. The day after that in Chino, Peru - hot, buggy, and pretty much as you'd expect in the deeeeeeep Amazon Forest during peak rainy season.

W's have 8 games remaining, 5 at home. given recent history you would expect them to go 5-3, w/ the exception that one game at home is vs 76ers.

but it seems that either 5-3 or 4-4 should keep them out of the play-in tournament maybe (?)

The thing for this is if Dallas thought it was their ball, why didn't they have two players go over to inbounds the ball? It wasn't the 4th so they wouldn't have gotten the ball at half court.
