https://calbears.com/news/2023/4/4/mens-basketball-mark-madsen-era-begins-in-berkeley.aspx

BERKELEY – Less than 24 hours after Mark Madsen and his wife, Hannah, welcomed their fourth child into the world, the two-time NBA champion and 2022-23 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year was introduced into a new family himself.

Welcome to a new era of California men's basketball.

"The history of Cal basketball is winning; and winning at a high, high level," said Madsen, who was introduced as the 19th head coach in Cal men's basketball history at a press conference at Haas Pavilion on Monday. "The NCAA Championship, multiple Sweet 16s, repeated NCAA Tournaments – I'm going to do everything in my power and we will restore Cal basketball to that level of play."

even though there are not that many opportunities, i rather enjoy changing tires. it is a good combo of physical activity and a little bit of not-too-hard problem solving.

not that i have seen it, but my wife's dad insisted she learn to change a spare in HS before getting her license. good parenting, in my book!

Expand full comment

My dad made sure I knew how to do a few things -- change a tire, check/adjust tire pressure, check the oil and add more if needed, manage coolant and washer fluid levels, know how to jump start. I am grateful!

Walk-off! A’s beat Guardians 4-3

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/4/4/23670684/walk-off-as-beat-guardians-4-3

The Oakland A’s beat the Cleveland Guardians tonight, walking it off and winning by a final score of 4-3.

It was JP Sears on the mound for Oakland, making his 2023 debut. He was solid in the early going, giving up four weak-contact singles over the first three innings and inducing a well-timed double play with runners at the corners.

The A’s struck first against Cleveland starter Shane Bieber. A leadoff walk and single in the third inning brought up centerfielder Esteury Ruiz and he doubled down the left field line to bring in the first run and put runners at second and third.

Will Smith homers again, Julio Urías scoreless as Dodgers sweep Rockies

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/4/4/23670749/will-smith-dodgers-home-runs-julio-urias-scoreless-rockies

Behind the long ball, and another solid performance by Julio Urías, who surely appreciates facing this Colorado lineup away from Coors Field, the Dodgers wrapped up another win, improving to 4-2 on the season, beating the Rockies 5-2 on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers' start to the season has been marked by blowout victories, and narrow losses, something that carried over to the first game of this series, and while a 5-2 win doesn’t necessarily scream either of those things, in a way it was a bit of both.

The Dodgers looked in control for much of this game and came into the ninth inning up 5-0, but an out-of-nowhere rally on Phil Bickford, required Dave Roberts to turn to Evan Phillips in the middle of the ninth, pitching with the tying run on base at one point.

Warriors roll the Thunder in the second half for huge win

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2023/4/4/23670773/warriors-thunder-136-125-win

In a game with playoff energy, or at least play-in energy, the Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder slugged it out at the Chase Center. While the Warriors never held a lead until nearly 40 minutes into the game, they pulled away to come away with a huge 136-125 win that temporarily put them into 5th place in the Western Conference.

Steph Curry led the way with 34 points, but it was Jordan Poole who was the closer late. He had 18 points in the final quarter, including eight straight Warriors points as they put the game away down the stretch.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way for Oklahoma City with 32 points, one of six OKC players in double figures. But the Thunder’s red-hot first-half shooting abandoned them after halftime, especially from three-point range, where the Warriors finished with a 30-point advantage.

Either the Lakers or Clippers will get one more loss tonight, Pels have the Grizzlies tonight and the Knicks on Friday. The Lakers and Clippers both have games left against the Suns and Minnesota also will play the Pelicans. Not to mention the Suns final three are Nuggets, Lakers, Clippers in four days.

So there will be lots of movement, but I think they have a good shot at staying in the 5 or 6 spot even if they lose to the Kings. Blazers is a must win to close out the season.

Yup, probably winning one more game keeps them out of the play-in.

Mine goes into a quart mason jar, then into a gallon Ziploc when the jar gets full, then when the Ziploc and the jar are full, I pull out enough quarters to fill up the car's ashtray to use in parking meters and take the rest to a Coinstar, where it's free to count if I load it all onto an Amazon gift card which I'm happy to do. It's usually around $150 every couple of years.

I used to take it until this year - just leave it behind now.

I forgot that it's free if you use an Amazon gift card. That would be better than me rolling them.

Most quarters go in the center console for parking, everything else goes in a little ceramic boston terrier until its full. I may be one of the last hold outs who then hand rolls everything up and takes it to the bank for cash.

I was thinking of trying make some sort of holder such that I don't need to count the coins. I can just put them in and it only lets me put in the number for each roll. That's probably too tedious. I guess I could just make stacks of 5 or 10.

i try not to have any nor carry any around. usually just add it as a tip or put it in one of those "save abused animals and children" type donation buckets.

there used to be some benefit to hoarding quarters for parking meters, but with all the parking apps these days you dont really need those anymore.

Expand full comment

I used a parking app *once*. When I found that it charged me another 30 cents, I resolved not to use a parking app unless absolutely necessary.

Berkeley's parking meters do take credit cards, though, as well as coins. Plastic is advised, though, for the most expensive meters, where you can be charged as much as $6 for 2 hours (in the downtown core).
