Served on a federal jury in a civil case. That was 1988. Not happy about that one. I have since then received several summonses, but have not served since then.
Mrs Slug has, however, served on a jury in a murder trial. Dude was convicted of 2nd degree murder, sentenced to 40 years to life, I believe.
it is very hard to "get out of jury duty" so there is much larger pool of people. if you are called and do not serve you are exempt for 3-5 years. if you serve it is more like 5-7 yrs exemption.
i have served twice in the 22 yrs we have lived here.
Used to get it regularly when I lived in Venice/Los Angeles, only had to go in once and got dismissed due to work commitments. Still waiting on my first summons since moving to Glendale.
I used to get a summons every 12-18 months in CA but I haven't received a single one in MD despite living here for almost 7 years now. Though I'd probably get dismissed immediately because my work/research is on topics related to human behavior.
I once got a questionnaire gauging my eligibility but never got a summons. I've lived in the same place for more than thirty years and have always voted so don't know how I've been missed.
I might need to contact the state. I thought I had seen I received a jury duty summons in the USPS Informed Delivery email but I don't recall seeing it in my mailbox. Might have to find a phone number to call.
A Michigan man told police he put a gun to his own head and then when his wife lunged at him and he accidentally shot her. 8 times. With a gun that has a 6 round capacity. And accidentally stabbed her twice too.
Never served - but about a year ago, my wife was on one hearing about a massive and complicated case of multi-generation rape and child abuse. It really disturbed her; at least he was found guilty of all but one charge.
If you're a masochist look up the team or teams Cal has the worst winning percentage since WW2, minimum four games. I once started to figure out the Bears' record in Big Games since my first in '64 and had to be talked off a ledge.
I've missed eleven of those and the Bears were 3-8 in them and 17-29 in ones I've attended. And people wonder why I pranced on the field last November 19th.

Did this lead the SCU to scrap the entire program?
The University of Oregon did just that to their baseball program after my dad hit his only home run in a 4 year Cal career as a middle IF… he homered in Eugene, & the Ducks nix the program for years, tho it was probably pure coincidence. ;-)
Per Wikipedia, looks like Santa Clara ended the football program in 1992 because it was operating in Division 2 but all their other programs were Division 1, and the NCAA passed a new rule saying you couldn't do that.
For this year second to the Lakers would be the Nets in my opinion, they are winning now, but are set for the play in. They squandered the James Harden era, Kyrie Irving screwed over the team with selfishness. It remains to be seen if they can save the season in the playoffs (if they make it)
The Lakers are basically built like the Angels: A couple of generational talents and then a lot of garbage. Angels have somehow managed to squander the careers of two Hall of Famers. You have to work to be that bad with those two guys.
Sushi is so expensive in the US. Easily over $100 if you want good sushi. Pre-Covid I used to go to Japan 3-4x a year and eat as much as I want. Now after 2 years without one, I'm really craving and finally decided to spend a lot of money for it this weekend.
I do. 101F fever, aches, feels like the flu. Felt like hay fever after lunch, got worse throughout the afternoon so I tested when I got home. If it doesn't get worse than this, it's fine I can sleep for a couple of days and be over it. 🤞
Early spring has been hanging on. Chilly mornings even on the days its been nice in the afternoon. BIG wintery storm with wind last Sunday & Monday, after a nice Saturday. Today is supposed to be the warmest of the year, well into the 70s in western Oregon, but showers are due back tomorrow and for several days.
Heh, I'm thinking of taking Friday afternoon off to enjoy the weather. I hoped to squeeze in some rides this week, but I broke an axle on Monday and was sidelined until I replaced it yesterday.
Fortunately it was a pretty mild affair (ie not leading to a catastrophic crash and injury). I discovered that over the years the axle had become slightly offset within the hub, so it had a big contact point on the left side of the fork and an ever-smaller contact point on the right side. About 15 minutes into the ride I noticed the front started feeling funny, like the wheel was encountering some resistance. I assumed it was the brakes--because I could hear them rubbing the disc when I rotated the wheel--or the wheel bearings--because I hadn't re-greased them since last summer. I pulled over, tinkered with it for a moment, and decided to limp the bike home to diagnose the issue and fix it. About 50 feet later the part of the axle barely hanging onto the fork slipped and all the weight then fell on the quick-release axle. The latter is not designed to bear weight so it immediately snapped.
Amid the chaos a couple wheel bearings cracked, so I replaced them too. And for good measure I took apart the rear hub and re-centered that axle.
It was only a misty drizzle when I was out but I was surprised how many were out riding. Most appeared to be commuters and I haven't seen that many bike commuters in a long while, let alone when it was raining.
In Seattle this week for work. Started off with a high of 50 on Monday, going to be 70 today, then back to possible snow over the weekend.
Hertz let he choose any car within an area and they had a Mercedes SLC 300, which obviously I chose (for the same 30/day price). Going to go to dinner at Duke's seafood along the water downtown so I'll probably put the top down on the drive over.
Still in random-number-generator season in the Mid-Atlantic. Temps in the 50s/30s this weekend with 70s/50s next week. We hit the low-20s about a week and a half ago and were in the 70s a few days later.
I am really enjoying The Dropout. Amanda Seyfried is so good as Elizabeth Holmes. Just completed episode 3 and she completed her full Anakin to Darth Vader transformation as she has purged out all the original employees, adopted the all black outfit and fake deep voice.
The Eastman emails have been released to the 1/6 Committee. As expected, they allegedly show Trump and his minions conspired to overthrow the election.
Apropos: Rep John Rose (R-TN, 6th district) met his now wife when she was 13 and was on the board that awarded her at least one scholarship for FFA/4H when she was in high school. She won a scholarship at his alma mater (TN Tech) and won a scholarship named after him. He married her when she was still in college at age 21 and he was 46. Grooming takes time, I guess.
Collin Morikawa and Max Homa are playing at the Masters this week, and all anyone wants to talk about is the Stanford golfer playing, like that's some big deal. And the Arizona State player/tax evader/open accepter of blood money who is nowhere to be seen.
Fulham Striker Aleksander Mitrovic has attempted penalties against goalkeepers named Southwood, Westwood and Eastwood. There is a young keeper named Northwood in England's 5th or 6th division - they said they would play a pre-season against Fulham and conspire to give up a penalty.
That's really weird because I've seen her on High Heat and I don't remember her making off the wall comments like that. She normally seems like she know what's going on.
The A’s had a pop up at Justin Herman Plaza in downtown SF yesterday and I got my picture taken with Stomper! Plus a free t shirt and towel. I thought maybe they would ask me to try out for the team too

I've received the summons several times. They only time I had to come to the courthouse I was turned away as they had enough candidates.

Same (I get summoned every year in California, but not while I lived in Ohio)

Since WW2, Cal football has the best winning percentage against which opponent? Minimum 4 games.
If you're a masochist look up the team or teams Cal has the worst winning percentage since WW2, minimum four games. I once started to figure out the Bears' record in Big Games since my first in '64 and had to be talked off a ledge.
Our $C record can't be good save for the late 90's
Since the end of WWII, Cal has beaten USC 22% of the time. Cal has only won more than one game in a row three times.
Since 1964: 20-37-1 in Big Games
I've missed eleven of those and the Bears were 3-8 in them and 17-29 in ones I've attended. And people wonder why I pranced on the field last November 19th.
I am. And yeesh. At least TBB will be happy.
Minnesota
4-2 (0.667 pct.)
Santa Clara, 5-0
This is correct. Actually 6-0. And before that, Cal went 1-5 against the Broncos
Did this lead the SCU to scrap the entire program?
The University of Oregon did just that to their baseball program after my dad hit his only home run in a 4 year Cal career as a middle IF… he homered in Eugene, & the Ducks nix the program for years, tho it was probably pure coincidence. ;-)
I mean, facts are facts correct?
I don't know the cause of the program discontinuation, but Cal did play against them in the final season (1952). Cal was ranked #3 at the time.
Per Wikipedia, looks like Santa Clara ended the football program in 1992 because it was operating in Division 2 but all their other programs were Division 1, and the NCAA passed a new rule saying you couldn't do that.

GB49, is that you?
Colorado? I think the Bears are 5-2 against them in the last 20ish years, and they didn't play very often prior to the existence of the Pac-12.
The Bears are 6-4 against the Buffs.
Cal is 7-4 vs. Buffs since WWII.
Oops, you're right, I didn't count last season's game.
Which team (besides the Lakers) did less with more talent this/recently finished season. Any sport, any level.
For this year second to the Lakers would be the Nets in my opinion, they are winning now, but are set for the play in. They squandered the James Harden era, Kyrie Irving screwed over the team with selfishness. It remains to be seen if they can save the season in the playoffs (if they make it)
The Italian national soccer team
The Lakers are basically built like the Angels: A couple of generational talents and then a lot of garbage. Angels have somehow managed to squander the careers of two Hall of Famers. You have to work to be that bad with those two guys.
That's just it, these Lakers didn't actually have all that much talent outside of the top few guys.
I don't know if one can be described as a "generational talent" if one is always injured. (cough, cough AD)
True. He was voted part of the NBA 75, which is ridiculous.
Ahead of Dwight (who is one of my least favorite players ever, but undoubtedly deserves to be on the list)
2007 Cal football
Seeing "2007 Cal football" gives me PTSD.
Why? They stopped the season after we beat Oregon! It was great!
USC football
University of Texas football seems to be a frequent answer as well.
Both teams have had similar issues, success and failures since they met for the NC at the Rose Bowl.
turns out that you can hire (multiple) coaches who can squander a steady supply of talented players
Sushi

Special guest post DBD with photos???
I once had sushi with TBB in Taipei.
Went to Shiro's Sushi last night for the Omakase. $75 for 19 pieces of Nigiri. Totally worth it.
made resv for next week
Kashiba is completely booked a couple weeks out
If you guys don't mind standing in line for an hour, go at 4 and get on the list for the chef's counter! (Seatings at 5pm, 7pm, and 9pm)
good to know. we'll keep that in mind
That's a cute comic :)
Cold?
No, but I did just test positive for Covid after being in the office all day! #plaguespreader
Do you have symptoms? Or is that what prompted you to test?
I do. 101F fever, aches, feels like the flu. Felt like hay fever after lunch, got worse throughout the afternoon so I tested when I got home. If it doesn't get worse than this, it's fine I can sleep for a couple of days and be over it. 🤞
The DC mayor wasn't feeling well and thought it was allergies. Finally took a test and it was positive.

Looks like a West Coast heat wave today, so no!
87 today downtown SF at lunch time!
Going to be 98 today here
typical Apr weather in NYC area. rain and semi-cold ..
i guess it is good for the "may flowers"
was hoping to ramp up the outdoor bike riding, but today is rained out.
might have to skip work on Fri to take advantage of better weather

Supposed to be 88 in Berkeley today. So, not cold. Where I am presently located it was 32 degrees yesterday morning and ice had formed on the lake.
Not necessarily cold, but 50 and rainy so not real comfortable. Opening day game moved from 4 to 7 to hopefully let the rain pass.
