THE AGE OF AI:

Head of OPEN AI Product Ops Blake Samic

in discussion with

Minerva Tantoco, ex-CTO of the City of NY

Plus A Panel of AI StartUps

Expand full comment

mostly people said the expected things

the unexpected ...

- all 4 CEO/founders on the AI startup panel were women

- when asked directly, the women did not say that the mental health toll on women in tech was more or worse than for men

- Blake Samic was not in person, virtual on Zoom .. not great

- people mentioned quantum computing as an game-changing accelerator for AI (as if there wasnt enough about quantum already!)

- Minerva Tantoco suggested that existing regulatory bodies FDA, FCC, etc take up regulation of AI based on the specific issue rather than create new agencies.

- Samic said that everyone at OpenAI implicitly thinks about ethics and bias and all those things however more formalized approaches were needed

- OpenAI uses some internal version of generative AI to surface and summarize insights that might arise from email and Slack conversations

- Samic implied that people will find creative ways to incorporate AI into their work and lives, not that the world was changing completely as a result of the current set of AI products you see

Why Apr 14?

The World Quantum Day is celebrated on April 14, a reference to 4.14, the rounded first digits of Planck’s constant: 4.1356677×10−15 eV⋅s = 0.000 000 000 000 004 1356677 electron volt second, a product of energy and time that is the fundamental constant governing quantum physics.

The offense had to be jarred from its slumber at some point. A pivotal series sweep at the hands of the Washington Nationals last summer was the first torpedo to the hull, but again? And in April? Too early for that nonsense—thankfully, surprisingly, Tyler Fitzgerald and Nick Ahmed felt the same way.

I think this counts as a skill: Cooking. I'm adequate but the missus prepares 90% of our dinners. I'd like to do more cooking and actually be good at it.

Expand full comment

cooking is a legit skill. not sure i have any concrete advice. maybe just commit to cooking 1-2 meals a week no matter they are. eventually you get good at it from the repetition.

presumably you will develop some repertoire of dishes you can make so that you dont cook the same thing every time.

that being said, whenever my 17 yr enthusiastically asks if they can help make dinner i say "sure, why dont you start by making white rice" which they find supremely boring.

i have a Mr Mayagi attitude about making white rice as the gateway to learning how to cook. i college and grad school the amount of time i allowed myself to make dinner was the 20 min it took to make a pot of white rice.

Expand full comment

Making white rice is simple, but it can be intimidating if you've never done it. I know that sounds nonsensical, but it was true for me because I was absolutely sure I'd muck it up.

A rice cooker is the key. My kids and I all have this one. Water in the rice, water around the bowl (this creates steam to cook the rice), push the lever down, and cook.

I'm not opposed to a rice cooker per se, it just takes up more space on the counter or in the pantry.

I now make white rice confidently in a 2 qt. pot. I also don't walk away from it because I'm also cooking something else at the same time.

Learning project management software like Smartsheet, Asana, or Jiro. I think I can upgrade my office's workflow processes, improving everybody's efficiency. I think I can justify my job for another year if I save our company a quarter million dollars by designing it myself rather than buying an off-the-shelf solution.

i would like to think that my daily rituals and slow pace are a good head start and i am not particularly stressed out by anything. however, i am curious to see what something like this would do for me. i could benefit from a bit more focus and concentration ...
