The last time I saw my dad we were talking about the Netherlands and I was saying that much as I like the idea of moving back, after all these years in the US I’m not equipped to live somewhere that regimented / orderly, I’d need to have a transitional period somewhere a little more chaotic. Last chuckle I got out of him as it turned out.
This is my kid's spring break. We are up in DC visiting colleges. Frankly, I take every opportunity to say the phrase "Foggy Bottom" because I have maturity of an 8 year old.
Spring Break was last week for my kids. Spent a few nights in Sea Ranch, up the California coast, and then an overnight stay in Monterey for the aquarium and a whale watching trip.
My wife and the 17 year old are touring colleges in New England. I did a quick run with our daughter to three colleges in MA back in February, plus me and the missus are not wholly in sync over road trips, so I tapped out of this one. Maybe I’ll go on vacation again someday 🫤
I may have to do something myself - the womenfolk are going to spend the summer in Vermont per usual. The older daughter will almost immediately have to return to college, & the other 2 won’t want to squeeze in a trip before HS resumes, so...

I’m waiting to see what the rules about outsiders at camp are this summer - last year they barred all visitors & while I kind of missed being in Vermont, I discovered that I didn’t miss driving 1100 miles for a weekend visit or staying at a childrens camp. Also this summer all three of my wife and the girls will be easily reachable by phone so I might make this a permanent change.

Feel like I'm getting a head cold with a slight cough. Just took a test (negative) since I came back on Fri from a testing event. It was in a large room and the tables were spaced at least 10 feet apart. And the participant's in each table were probably about 5 feet apart. But only a few people wore masks. So most likely it's just a head cold and I just took some Emergen-C.
Today I'm at a work event and there are about 70 ppl in a large conference room. I have no issue with it but I feel uncomfortable so I put a mask on. I'm the only one wearing it but I don't care I just want to do what's best for my family.
I'm on day 4 of my isolation, very minor symptoms though. I assume the coughing my girlfriend was doing last week was her case of it and now it's my turn.

Thinking back, I used to have insanely strong leg muscles - I have a vague recollection of being in a gym on campus and lift more than 600 lbs in a Leg Press Machine - I had never done any lifting at all, just cycling.
I was doing a lot of squats in China before I left. I don't want to join the crappy 24 hour fitness type gyms, but the cross fit gyms seem a bit douchey on their IG and website so I'm a bit vexxed.
i never really thought about legs because i figured those were "good" since i ride a lot. now after doing some strength training for a few months i am realizing that they are "not so good" and there is a lot of room for improvement there that could help the core strength that i badly need.
I figure my run every day is as much leg work as I need. I took a brief rest this morning as I almost got divebombed by a barred owl. A second one came by shortly after so I stopped and watched them both perched on a nearby branch. Pretty cool in the heart of the city.
Any idea if a nest was nearby? I would imagine that coming close to being divebombed by an owl would indicate they think you're encroaching on their territory.
I run that trail about once a week and it's the first time I've seen or heard an owl there. I had the same thought as you and when I looked up the type of owl, it noted that its mating season is right around now.
I have a theory that riding can work your legs well, but you have to ride in a way that does that, and it may not be optimal for, say, completing a road race faster.
Back in my young days, my leg muscle growth was much more responsive than my upper body. Didn't take photos so I have no proof, but no biggee. These days, the whole body is nonresponsive.
My weight lifting now is much less productive than 25 years ago. I used to work out about 1.5 hours every other day and easily gained muscle and tightened the core. Nowadays I maintain tone and add a little size (not very much) but seem to have hit a wall. Plus, I'm still carrying around some Covid weight, too. Kind of frustrating.

I run that trail about once a week and it's the first time I've seen or heard an owl there. I had the same thought as you and when I looked up the type of owl, it noted that its mating season is right around now.
I have a theory that riding can work your legs well, but you have to ride in a way that does that, and it may not be optimal for, say, completing a road race faster.
Back in my young days, my leg muscle growth was much more responsive than my upper body. Didn't take photos so I have no proof, but no biggee. These days, the whole body is nonresponsive.
My weight lifting now is much less productive than 25 years ago. I used to work out about 1.5 hours every other day and easily gained muscle and tightened the core. Nowadays I maintain tone and add a little size (not very much) but seem to have hit a wall. Plus, I'm still carrying around some Covid weight, too. Kind of frustrating.
