Amstel Gold race this weekend won "seemingly easily" by two-time TdF winner Pogacar. he is among the favorites to win the 4th monument of the year, the Liege-Bastonge-Liege.
it is my younger daughter's favorite race because they just like saying the name. also, it is one of the few times of year i make Liege wafels at home. those are the nice thick ones w/ bits of pearl sugar in the batter that caramelize nicely when you cook them up.
North Carolina lawmakers introduced a bill to ban giving children participation trophies for youth sports activities.
The three Republican state representatives — Sens. Tim Moffitt, Eddie Settle, and Bobby Hanig — introduced the bill, called Eliminate Participation Trophies, to the state senate on March 30.
The bill says that any award given to children for youth recreation activities must be based on identified performance achievements.
I actually hate participation trophies if they are of the "we dont keep score, everybody is a winner!" bullshit. Athletics is a really good life training tool. Work hard to win, do your best, teamwork, learn how to lose but keep striving to get better, etc. Everybody wins is a bullshit concept and probably for the first time ever, I am supportive of a Republican initiative (admittedly without reading it or knowing if they have riders that ban trans kids recognition or dumb bathroom shit, etc.)
I've ran many chess tournaments for kids. In the beginner sections, we typically give a participation medal. Reason: if they are first time competing, it can be very demoralizing if you do badly or not as well as you expected. We want them to come back and try again. So, the medal is supposed typically goes with a "You should feel good about coming out and trying your best. We hope you come back and try again."
Beginners section only - never in anything beyond that.
This is not surprising. The economy seems to be doing fine, but the cost of living seems to be off the charts. The average voter is going to blame Biden for this, no doubt.
I saw someone making an interesting point that two of the biggest pain points for inflation have been gasoline and other energy costs, those are down, but people basically don't mentally classify that as "inflation related" - they tend to put things like "the cost of my groceries" on the list, and those price increases have been stickier.
This is why politics as entertainment is so bad. Issues become meme-ified into nonsense (eg opposing SNAP as it sounds like socialism which Q warned us about, bald eagle emoji), when in reality it is a program that (a) involves a substantial reduction in human misery, and so is a moral good, and (b) is a solid investment in our most precious resource, our own people (esp our kids), and so makes financial sense as well. I wish we could find a way to make politics boring again so issues like these are left to the experts to resolve.
A 16 year-old black teenager rang the doorbell at the wrong house to pick up his siblings. The homeowner allegedly opened the door and then shot him in the head. Once the child fell to the ground, he was allegedly shot again in the head. The child miraculously survived, ran for help, but is no hospitalized with life threatening wounds.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Urías got ahead of Patrick Wisdom 0-2, just one pitch away from pitching exactly six innings in each of his four starts this season. But then Patrick Wisdom homered into the left field pavilion, breaking a 1-1 tie. Two pitches later, Cody Bellinger deposited a ball well up the right field pavilion to widen Chicago’s advantage.
Wisdom homered in all three games of the weekend series, giving him six on the season. Bellinger was hitless in 12 at-bats against left-handed pitchers this season before that home run, his 80th career homer at Dodger Stadium, 10th-most in the 62-year history of the ballpark.
The game was there for the taking. Fox did what Fox does and Domas' struggles really affected Heurter and the DHO game that has been a constant of the Kings' offense. However, without Monk playing like a man possessed by demons, the Kings would have definitely lost. Monk shot 14-14 from the line, just as an indication of his relentless attack of the basket. On one hand, it is nice to see the Kings win in an unorthodox manner, on the other hand, Looney's D on Domas has me concerned.
I'm worried without Mike Brown, their D won't be as good and there won't be a good plan on how to handle Fox and Monk.
I have flashbacks of when Monk and Fox went off in the regular season matchup between UNC and UK back in 2017. I think Monk went off for something like 42. Then in the Elite 8, UNC won the game that mattered. But Fox and Monk hit a bunch of contested 3s late in the game to tie it up.
I think Wiggins took too many 3s, especially when they weren't falling late in the game. I thought his D late in the game wasn't as good. Not unexpected given he hasn't played in 2 months.
Need to figure out how to defend Fox and Monk from their drives, otherwise they have no shot. Other teams seek contact when going into the lane and get the call. Steph and JP avoid contact.

BERKELEY – Cal fans got a sneak preview of the upcoming 2003 football season on Saturday during the Cal Football Spring Showcase at California Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage portion of the event that ended Cal's 15 spring workouts featured 11-on-11 periods including those focused on fourth-and-one situations and red zone work with the latter a competition period that was won 18-4 by the offense.
The first 11-on-11 period started with Sam Jackson V leading the offense down the field before he capped off a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run that was the first of six offensive touchdowns on the day. Lindenwood beat Army 36-7, whereas Cal beat Army 31-14. Cal is not a favorite to win the Championship this year, but they do have a chance.
I think Cal played their B team against BYU and rested all their starters since they were locked into the seed. So BYU must have been the 4 or 5 seed which is why Cal is hosting. So it should be a good competitive game.

That's how my kids T-ball and soccer was too. 5 year olds got participation awards. Not after that.

EL MACERO – The California men's golf team tied its best round of the El Macero Classic on Sunday, closing things out with its second straight even-par 288 to move up another four spots to 11th out of 20 teams.
Daniel Heo (76-72-70 – 218) led the Golden Bears by carding a 2-under 70 in round three, moving all the way up from 57th place entering the day to 36th by the end of the competition.
Heo's day three score tied Nathan Wang and Aaron Du for the lowest single-round mark of the tournament for the Bears. After both shooting 2-under on Saturday, Wang and Du matched each other shooting 1-over 73 in round three.

The Golden Bears will be rolling out a new lineup, led by mainstays and low scorers for the year Cristina Ochoa (74.2) , Annika Borrelli (74.4) and Mika Jin (75.0).
Since beginning the year with three straight sub-70 rounds at the USF Intercollegiate, Ochoa has gone on to finish in the top 20 in six of nine tournaments. She and Borrelli own the Bears' lowest rounds of the spring, having both carded 4-under 68s.

Cal (16-16, 5-13 Pac-12) moves ahead of Utah in the Pac-12 standings after taking two of three from the Utes. On Sunday, the Golden Bears pounded out 11 more runs and 13 hits. Kade Kretzschmar wrapped up his phenomenal week by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three driven in. He was a triple short of the cycle, hitting a double and a home run. The home run was his eighth of the season. Kretzschmar hit .769 for the series (10-for-13) raising his average by almost 100 points to .319 on the year.

DAVIS – The Cal lacrosse team closed out both its regular-season road and non-conference schedules with a 17-12 victory over UC Davis (7-5) at UC Davis Health Stadium on Saturday. Maya Lawliss, Kennedy Mason, and Amanda Morse each had a hat trick in the contest, while Morse added a pair of assists for a game-high five points. Josie Lillquist, Quinnlyn Mason, and Mya Wang had two goals each with Mason and Wang also picking up an assist. Courtney Wong and Isabel King each had one goal with Wong adding an assist.
Good for the Bears. This was the Bear's 4th victory, whereas they went 2-16 last season .

BERKELEY – Cal fans got a sneak preview of the upcoming 2003 football season on Saturday during the Cal Football Spring Showcase at California Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage portion of the event that ended Cal's 15 spring workouts featured 11-on-11 periods including those focused on fourth-and-one situations and red zone work with the latter a competition period that was won 18-4 by the offense.
The first 11-on-11 period started with Sam Jackson V leading the offense down the field before he capped off a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run that was the first of six offensive touchdowns on the day. Jackson connected with Jeremiah Hunter for a 37-yard gain on the opening drive's first play and finished the first series of downs 3-of-3 for 42 yards. Ashton Stredick had five carries for 17 yards on the drive including a key eight-yard run on a third down and three that got the offense down to the eight-yard line of the defense before Jackson ran into the end zone from five yards out two plays later.

Cal's two all-around qualifiers – junior Noah Newfeld and freshman Tyler Shimizu – each reached new personal bests on Saturday despite having just competed in six events the day before. Newfeld's floor score of 14.166 was the best set by any Bear all weekend, while Shimizu once again surpassed his previous career highs on vault (13.766) and all-around (79.398), adding an additional PR of 13.400 on rings. BERKELEY – For the second straight day at the Hellman Tennis Complex, Katja Wiersholm clinched a 6-1 victory over an opponent from the state of Washington, with the 30th-ranked California women's tennis team defeating 19th-ranked Washington on Saturday. After celebrating Haley Giavara and Erin Richardson on Senior Day, the Golden Bears got a dominant performance from Giavara and the 18th consecutive win from Jessica Alsola en route to sweeping the Huskies in singles.
Cal, which also defeated Washington State 6-1 on Friday, improved its record to 11-7 (7-2 Pac-12) with its fourth straight win. Washington is 15-7 (5-4).

MORAGA, Calif. – California rugby edged Saint Mary's 29-28 in the West Region Quarterfinals of the 2023 D1A National Collegiate Championships. The Golden Bears will now advance to the national semifinals next Saturday.
"We appreciate Saint Mary's," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "It was a pretty good game of rugby. Our boys were solid today, we're getting better."
Saint Mary's put two converted tries on the board in minutes 15 and 25 to take an advantage as the match hit the midway point of the first half. The Bears began to claw back from the deficit when senior winger Max Clark took a massive run from the 50-yard line down the left touchline and into the tryzone to secure Cal's first points of the day.
Cal faces BYU at home, who it lost to the Cougars 50-14 less than 3 weeks ago. If they get by BYU, the finals will play either #1 Navy or #5 Lindenwood. Navy beat Cal 38-33 in Annapolis a month ago. Lindenwood beat Army 36-7, whereas Cal beat Army 31-14. Cal is not a favorite to win the Championship this year, but they do have a chance.
I think Cal played their B team against BYU and rested all their starters since they were locked into the seed. So BYU must have been the 4 or 5 seed which is why Cal is hosting. So it should be a good competitive game.
Patrick McMorris, Safety, 2022 MWC co-Defensive Player of the Year, younger brother to Malik.. was an awesome portal pickup on Saturday to plug in the Daniel Scott sized hole (though hopefully the safety position wont be as important next year, if the guys in front make plays)
