The rules as laid out in 2005 and before were meant to help level the playing field between institutions (schools) competing against other schools. It was done to restrict the money advantage some institutions had (and still have) over other, less wealthy, institutions.
Competition between institutions would be muted if not restricted to a select few if there had been no rules about recruiting and compensating athletes. The emphasis of the rules in existence in 2005 were to reward "amateurism" which was the raison d'etre of the NCAA to begin with.
NIL has blown that out of the water. The NCAA as we know it is a dead man walking (metaphorically speaking). It would not surprise me to find that the NCAA's powers will have shriveled dramatically within the next 20 years; possibly to the point of the institution itself no longer existing.
The schools with the greatest power seem intent on exploiting the CFP to make as much money as possible, without regard to the future implications to the sport itself. College football draws closer and closer to the NFL in how it looks and feels to fans. The two minute warning will be a thing in college football games this season or in 2025.
FSU and Clemson seem intent on leaving the ACC to make more $$$ in the B1G or the SEC. Whither the ACC and the Big XII? What's there to sustain the ACC and Big XII as power conferences?
This may have the effect of curtailing interest in football among the fanbase that falls outside of the B1G and the SEC. With a path to the National Championship cut off for schools outside the B1G and the SEC, where's the interest; the reason for following the sport?
I am remarkably pessimistic about the future of college football for the first time ever in my life. Schools that recently had been Power 5 institutions will seriously consider dropping football and thereby endangering intercollegiate athletics at many institutions sometime in the next 20 years. NIL has had an effect, yes. But the powers shaping college football's landscape by way of the CFP and conference realignment do not seem to be worried about the Group of 5 much less schools in the Big XII, ACC, and what was the Pac-12.
Btw I think a lot of what we are seeing re CFB is a shift in who the audience is. As the sport grew it morphed from being focused on alums to instead just being focused on the general public. The general sports viewing public doesn’t give a shit if Oregon State or Wazzu (or honestly us either) is nuked into irrelevance by the rules. They are just happy to watch Ohio State play Alabama in round 1 of a ten round playoff. Because the audience shifted like that, so did the business and alas here we are.
In the case of recruiting violations, the effect on the game is indirect. The actual football game is unchanged but one team maybe has better ability to attract talent.
In the case of doping or in game cheating, the effect is direct. One athlete/team actually performs better than the same athlete/team would otherwise because the transgression. This creates a feeling among spectators that the sport itself is illusory or illegitimate, and therefore can erode fan interest significantly. Guardians of various sport leagues really need to bring the hammer down on this stuff, and cannot afford to ever change.
If I remember correctly, there was an option to ride camels and elephants at Marine World when they were at the old Redwood Shores location. Or was it the old SF zoo? I can't quite remember. Either way, I remember that the elephants were more popular so I rode the camel. The camels and elephants went in a well-worn path and they were clearly depressed/broken animals. Even as a small child - perhaps only 5 years old - thinking that it was undeniably grim and sad for the animals.
I think I kind of remember what you're talking about. It was always weird to me that they kept the old marine World exit sign of 101 way after Marine World moved to Vallejo. I guess they didn't have anything to rename it to until Oracle (?) bought the land.
we rode some camels in the sand dunes on our recent trip to India. we were in Jaisalmer, in the Rajasthan desert only 100 km from the western border w/ Pakistan.
it would appear they were the one-humped variety despite the padded seating thing having room for 2. the camels can get going pretty fast when they are trotting. i am sure they can go much faster too than they allow silly American tourists to experience.
