PSA: Cicada Brood XIX (13-year cycle) will be emerging around mid-May. Their swarms are huge and destructive to almost all woody plants younger than four years old. I just planted a large amount of new landscaping, so I will be out netting my yard over the next two weeks. Check to see if your area has Cicada XIX. Some areas in the midwest will also be hit by Brood XIII (17-year cycle), so it will be particularly bad for those areas.
I'll be in Nashville from 5/08-5/12. Glad I'm leaving, hopefully, before everything starts emerging. I remember visiting Louisville in 2004 for an interview before I moved there and driving around and heard sounds that I thought was my car. I stopped by the side of the road and got out and it didn't stop. Turns out it was the hum of the cicadas. I had never heard of them before.

It was a big day for a myriad of Oakland players today.
In spite of a rough outing from staff ace Paul Blackburn, who allowed 6 runs in 4 innings, the Athletics fought back from an early deficit to steal the game and series from one of the best teams in the league, the Baltimore Orioles.
The Dodgers’ six-game win streak came to an end on Sunday, subdued by the fastball and splitter of Kevin Gausman, who pitched seven strong innings in a 3-1 Blue Jays win on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Gausman’s seven innings marked the longest start by any pitcher against the Dodgers this season, and he struck out five with no walks while permitting just one run
STANFORD – The California baseball team got a tremendous pitching performance from freshman Trey Newmann and the offense pounded out seven extra base hits as the Golden Bears defeated Stanford 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Sunken Diamond.
CAREFREE, Ariz. – No. 21 California earned its best finish at the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship since 2016 as it placed second overall on Sunday at Desert Forest Golf Club. Three Golden Bears – Ethan Fang, Sampson Zheng and Eric Lee – finished third, sixth and 13th individually, respectively, to lead a Cal lineup that finished the three-day, 72-hole tournament at 43-over-par (368-370-360-365 – 1463).
TEMPE, Ariz. – Mika Lee tied a career high with four RBI as the No. 20 California softball team took the series from Arizona State with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Farrington Stadium.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 3 California women's water polo team was defeated by No. 1 UCLA 13-10 in Sunday's MPSF Championship Game, capping off the Golden Bears' deepest run in the tournament since 2011.
BERKELEY – The California beach volleyball team is going dancing for the third straight year after earning an NCAA Championship berth Sunday morning. The No. 7 Golden Bears (28-9) received their highest seeding in school history and will face No. 10 Long Beach State (21-13) in the first round on Friday at noon PT in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The California women's lacrosse team (5-10, 2-5 Pac-12) got to within one win of qualifying for the Pac-12 Tournament but a 15-8 loss at No. 19 Stanford (11-4, 7-0 Pac-12) ended the Golden Bears' season on Saturday night at Maloney Field at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
OJAI – Playing in the Pac-12 Championship for the last time, the 10th-ranked California women's tennis team lost to third-ranked Stanford 4-0 in the final Saturday at Libbey Park.
Cal (18-6) awaits Monday's 3:30 p.m. PT NCAA selection show to learn its next opponent, while Stanford (22-2) earns the Pac-12's automatic entry into the NCAA Championship.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second time in eight days, the No. 3 California women's water polo team claimed its largest win ever over No. 4 Stanford, dominating from the outset in a 10-4 MPSF Semifinal blowout Saturday at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Ironically, these are probably our only literal instances of NIL in it's stated purpose (until the EA Sports game) and they don't even get paid for it.

I do recommend the Chinese version first. Especially if you read the book. The Chinese version is closer to the book: it actually takes place in China and has nearly all Chinese characters. And has 30 detailed episodes. The Netflix version happens mostly in Oxford, England, and while there are 3 or 4 major Asian characters, the rest are European. And there are only 8 episodes, so things go faster with less detail.
i was at a dinner party and i was surprised to talk someone who didnt even know what it was. i guess there are plenty of circles that are completely different from mine ...
I finished it yesterday too. It made we want to go rewatch it given how nobody is telling the complete truth, everyone is a frenemy, and how delightfully subtle/sophisticated the show is. I loved the original and thought it was the best mini-series ever created prior to 2000 and in the running for the best historical Japanese drama aimed at a Western audience. I think this may be better than the original miniseries.
dinner choices
i know a couple excellent places in NYC for this >> 3 Old Fashions and a rare steak
one of them is a nice Italian steakhouse where the pasta is really good too.
Pick me up at 7:00 pm.

Right. Not an issue in California.
