Having your kids sit in the tailgunner position didn't die in the 70s, but your kids might if you buy these accessories

My parents never had a station wagon, though we did have a 1970 Chevy Sportsman van. The van had a driver's seat and passenger seat separated by the hood of the engine compartment. Behind that were two bench seats which were bolted down with 1" diameter bolts. These were removed when we needed to haul cargo, like grapes in barrels, firewood, or anything else you might imagine being transported in bulk.

That van was outfitted in January 1975 with an air conditioning unit behind the driver's seat. This was considered critical in preparation for a two-week cross-country trip when we moved from Berkeley to Hunterdon County, New Jersey that started March 22 and ended April 6.

The van also hauled teenagers to and from backpacking trips, and multiple adventures to some historical spot or other tourist attraction.

my first car - '75 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser - had a rear facing seat for 2. we stopped using it once we got a little too big to sit back there.

the rear seat area folded down and it was mostly a good secret storage area.

My parents had a 77 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. Didn't have the rear seats but had a cover that had storage where the foldable seats would've gone.

We had a station wagon that we all fit like cord wood in the back section. My parents later upgraded to a big ass van, that my sister later left the e-brake off of and put into my fraternity's pool.

Having not learned their lesson from Philly's dollar dog night, the Mets hosted a dollar dog night. A guy attempts a 9/9/9 challenge (nine dogs, nine beers in nine innings). He succeeds but gets kicked out for his trouble because other Mets fans threw their dogs at him because.... Mets fans.

Knicks beat the 76ers 118-115 and win the series 4-2. Great game 6. Knicks were leading by 8 with about 2 min left and the 76ers came back to down 1 before the Knicks ended up winning.

Expand full comment

The Knicks were leading early by as many as 22, i am told. 76ers came back and took lead for a while and were up by 7 or 8 mid 3rd quarter.

Embiid had some foul trouble and had to sit during a critical stretch that allowed Knicks to get the lead back.

Avoiding the sweep felt impossible after two cold Spring nights in which the San Francisco Giants’ bats were reduced to sawdust by Boston’s weirdly dominant, nothin’ straight pitching staff led by former coach Andrew Bailey (an “iPad guy” as my buddy Stu in Auburn would say).
