I just say SGBear whenever someone asks me this question

Scootie's avatar

I had to think for a sec and then came up with Connie Chung for some reason.

Wiata78's avatar

My wife also said Connie Chung! Her first guess, though, was Yo Yo Ma.

CalGal2004's avatar

Ben Fong-Torres, Martin Yan, Amy Tan, Elaine Chao (yuck), Margaret Cho, Nathan Adrian, Scott Fujita

heyalumnigo's avatar

If Yan Can Cook, so can you! Join Again!

Justbear's avatar

Tiger Woods, Michelle Kwan, Apolo Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi, Michael Chang

Justbear's avatar

More recent ones are Jeremy Lin, Collin Morikawa, Michele Wi, Kyler Murray

Wiata78's avatar

I would say Eddie Huang. But he has been out of the limelight lately.

Awkwafina is more famous. Simu Liu too, but he's Canadian.

There's Obama, who is part Asian.

There's me, but I'm not even as famous as SGBear.

James Hong's face is more famous than his name. 94 years old.

SGBear's avatar

Which one of you goobers came up to me at the TCU game all starstruck asking if it was really me. You have no idea what a compliment that was and how much I treasure that moment.

Wiata78's avatar

It wasn't me. But someday it will be!

heyalumnigo's avatar

Come see the famous SGBear, at Auburn next year!

heyalumnigo's avatar

If we go late 80s/90s there's Russell Wong, but I guess he wasn't that popular.

goldenone's avatar

Robert kiyosaki, rich Dad, poor Dad

dcblue's avatar

I guess I'm kind of a DC nerd so thought of George Takei and Norm Mineta.

SGBear's avatar

What was your favorite restaurant when you were a child?

SGBear's avatar

Round Table Pizza on Mt. Diablo Blvd. Pizza, rootbeer from those translucent red plastic cups, croutons you can steal from the salad bar, and video games. I mean, what more does a kid need?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

probably the same for me, but he one in the Rheem shopping center that is.

to this day i crave a King Arthur's Supreme from Round Table whenever i am in town.

also, during HS, it was the local hang out after Campo football games.

CruzinBears's avatar

It was our go to pizza place as well, definitely went to a handful of birthday parties and youth sports team parties there

heyalumnigo's avatar

Probably Pizza Junction because they had the 2nd floor with video games.

dcblue's avatar

We rarely ate out but when we did it was usually an all you can eat buffet. There was one on MacArthur in Fruitvale called George's that had a lot of Chinese food. Another in San Leandro but I can't remember the name.

CalGal2004's avatar

The San Leandro buffet - Pipers. Loved that place!

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i miss that place. it shut down right?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Yeah I think that and Skates went out of business.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Oh I take it back. I think it was HS Lordships that closed down.

FiatSlug's avatar

H's Lordships did close down. That place had been declining for decades.

SGBear's avatar

There's a name that I have not heard in a long time. A long time.

g.oso's avatar

Shut down and repurposed into retail.

FiatSlug's avatar

Spenger's, at one time, was the highest volume seafood restaurant west of the Mississippi.

Sigh, 6-7 McDonald's - we didn't really eat much out (at least with the kids - I think my parents might have gone out without us).

DBD CRIME BLOTTER

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

was thinking of living in DC for 3 wks this summer near Chinatown while daughter is away at camp. i was told that the Metro stops can be sketchy, even in the mornings

>> oh dude chinatown station is kinda sketchy lately. i saw a few folks get robbed in my early morning commute

DC Trojan's avatar

I have to admit that I have not been paying attention to local crime stats for the metro but I guess I’d be surprised if it was that high. Mind you pre pandemic there was almost no fare jumping so anything’s possible I guess

SGBear's avatar

If you live on Oakland's MacArthur Blvd and you're fed up with the noise of traffic, do you a) plug your ears, b) move, or c) plug them with hot lead. Until Cugel proves that he's not in jail, I'll assume it was him.

https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/oakland-man-charged-with-murdering-woman-over-traffic-noise/

Cugel's avatar

NOT IN JAIL - never, will except briefly on AFB in Alabama, and boy, my Dad was pissed at the stupid AF cops.

dcblue's avatar

That story doesn't narrow it down much. MacArthur runs for miles. I grew up just a ways up from 35th and MacArthur.

FiatSlug's avatar

Yup, MacArthur runs miles and miles through Oakland. It's a conglomeration of streets that were previously named something else in honor of General Douglas MacArthur. You know, the guy sometimes (sneeringly) referred to as American Caesar, who (in)famously said, "I shall return."

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Arrogant and insubordinate bastard sure made a mess in Korea.

Cugel's avatar

Eh, at the end - yes, but the was the stupid part, the fighting part was quite good.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I absolutely respect your knowledge, C. I'm just not a fan of Mac. Patently disobeying orders and trying to start WWIII was a bad look. While he definitely did some good things in his career, IMO all in all he's just an incredibly overrated historical figure that, like Grant, achieved much of his military success by sacrificing massive numbers of his own men. Plus, he made a mess of the Philippines as well.

SGBear's avatar

Maniac shoots up a Poughkeepsie hotel lobby and kills a man. His legal defense is [checks notes] that, while he definitely shot up the lobby, there's no way he killed him because he was shooting so furiously that he would have hit him with more bullets than one. No really. That's his defense.

https://midhudsonnews.com/2023/05/03/alleged-courtyard-killer-trial-underway-claims-bullet-didnt-come-from-his-gun/

That’s deeply stupid but then so is the defendant.

California says goodbye to heavy rains as La Niña ends. There is a 62% chance of switching to a strong El Niño, which means fire

https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/ensodisc.shtml

Scootie's avatar

El Niños are usually associated with heavy rains too, though. Maybe we'll have two successive wet years, which would be amazing for the groundwater supply and less so for my mental health.

DC Trojan's avatar

The first winter that we lived in CA was an El Niño winter and coming from the Netherlands I didn't see the big deal. Ten years later, the first winter I spent in Providence I was like jfc enough with the constant rain - this poster is not entirely an exaggeration https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/54/126653395_e8b2b7591e_b.jpg

dcblue's avatar

Really crappy last week. Two days where it rained all day last weekend followed by three days of cool, cloudy, windy days where it didn't reach sixty degrees. Transition back to low sixties today followed by a steady warm-up.

Athletics fall to the Mariners in 10 innings 7-2

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/5/3/23710745/athletics-mariners-sears-gilbert-ruiz-extra-innings

Game two with the A.L. West rivals kicked off an hour and five minutes late thanks to a day of rain in the bay area. After a longer than usual wait, A’s lefty J.P. Sears started for the A’s against righty Logan Gilbert for the Mariners. There is always a concern with weather delays that pitchers may have warmed up early cooled down and then ramped up the heat again, but both pitchers were sharp in their first innings.

In the top of the third, Mariners Shortstop J.P. Crawford reached on a Tony Kemp error. Jose Caballero singled, driving Crawford to third and taking second on the throw. Sears blew a fastball past Julio Rodriguez for the first out. Then did it again against Ty France for the second out of the inning. A fly out to right field got Sears out of his first jam of the night.

Logan Webb couldn’t quite pull off Disco’s 8 inning shut-out performance from last night, but he came close.

Tête-à-tête with Houston Astros starter Framber Valdez for 7 innings, Webb took the mound in the 8th against the bottom of the order and started to fray at the seams. The San Francisco Giants starter nearly skated free before his old foe, bad-breathed and foul Late-Game Homer, took the form of Alex Bregman and lifted a 2-out 2-run homer to put Houston within one run.

Max Muncy’s walk-off grand slam beats Craig Kimbrel, sweeps Phillies

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/5/3/23710395/max-muncy-walk-off-grand-slam-dodgers-phillies-craig-kimbrel

For a Dodgers fan base which endured numerous squandered opportunities by Craig Kimbrel to properly fulfill the closer role in 2022, it was poetic to wrap up a series sweep against the Phillies, with a Max Muncy walk-off grand slam against the right-hander.

Wednesday’s win was hard fought, as the Phillies scored the first five runs of the game, but hard work by the bullpen, and the offense one through nine was just enough, to drive this 10-6 win, ending a perfect homeland.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

The start was delayed 65 minutes by rain, contributing to a paltry crowd of 2,685 one night after the A's drew 2,583.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

looks like the rain delay helped!!

Loved the series…found the movie to be somewhat lame…a disappointing conclusion to a solid Netflix show.

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

SGBear's avatar

The GOP installed a Tulsi Gabbard-like mole in my state's senate. Recently, she ripped off her proverbial mask and switched parties to the GOP. The GOP was only one seat away from a super-majority to overturn our Democratic governor's veto and now they have it. The irony is that the mole was from a super deep blue area, so she'll almost certainly be recalled. But before the DEMs can organize that, the GOP is ramming through every vile piece of legislation they can now. Ban abortion. No permits for concealed carry. And they just passed a bill that will make it illegal for minors to have any gender-affirming care - including hormone blockers. While the law will go into effect on Oct 1, after my kid turns 18, it will make what I did a criminal act. 80% of trans kids have thought about suicide and 42% have attempted it. My kid child had dark thoughts when he was a boy. My kid as a trans person is super well adjusted, happy, and optimistic. To those who want to force their interpretation of some iron-age scrolls on us to create a white Christian nation - GO FUCK YOURSELF - YOU'RE GOING TO GET A BUNCH OF US KILLED, YOU HEARTLESS SUPERSTITIOUS MOTHERFUCKERS.

Proud Boy Lose

Four members of the Proud Boys, including their former leader Enrique Tarrio, were convicted on Thursday of seditious conspiracy for plotting to keep President Donald J. Trump in power after his election defeat by leading a violent mob in attacking the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The jurors in the case failed to reach a decision on the sedition charge for one of the defendants, Dominic Pezzola, although he was convicted of other serious felonies.

The verdicts, coming after seven days of deliberations in Federal District Court in Washington, were a major blow against one of the country’s most notorious far-right groups and another milestone in the Justice Department’s vast investigation of the Capitol attack.
