Really crappy last week. Two days where it rained all day last weekend followed by three days of cool, cloudy, windy days where it didn't reach sixty degrees. Transition back to low sixties today followed by a steady warm-up.
El Niños are usually associated with heavy rains too, though. Maybe we'll have two successive wet years, which would be amazing for the groundwater supply and less so for my mental health.
The first winter that we lived in CA was an El Niño winter and coming from the Netherlands I didn't see the big deal. Ten years later, the first winter I spent in Providence I was like jfc enough with the constant rain - this poster is not entirely an exaggeration https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/54/126653395_e8b2b7591e_b.jpg
Game two with the A.L. West rivals kicked off an hour and five minutes late thanks to a day of rain in the bay area. After a longer than usual wait, A’s lefty J.P. Sears started for the A’s against righty Logan Gilbert for the Mariners. There is always a concern with weather delays that pitchers may have warmed up early cooled down and then ramped up the heat again, but both pitchers were sharp in their first innings.
In the top of the third, Mariners Shortstop J.P. Crawford reached on a Tony Kemp error. Jose Caballero singled, driving Crawford to third and taking second on the throw. Sears blew a fastball past Julio Rodriguez for the first out. Then did it again against Ty France for the second out of the inning. A fly out to right field got Sears out of his first jam of the night.
Logan Webb couldn’t quite pull off Disco’s 8 inning shut-out performance from last night, but he came close.
Tête-à-tête with Houston Astros starter Framber Valdez for 7 innings, Webb took the mound in the 8th against the bottom of the order and started to fray at the seams. The San Francisco Giants starter nearly skated free before his old foe, bad-breathed and foul Late-Game Homer, took the form of Alex Bregman and lifted a 2-out 2-run homer to put Houston within one run.
For a Dodgers fan base which endured numerous squandered opportunities by Craig Kimbrel to properly fulfill the closer role in 2022, it was poetic to wrap up a series sweep against the Phillies, with a Max Muncy walk-off grand slam against the right-hander.
Wednesday’s win was hard fought, as the Phillies scored the first five runs of the game, but hard work by the bullpen, and the offense one through nine was just enough, to drive this 10-6 win, ending a perfect homeland.

Four members of the Proud Boys, including their former leader Enrique Tarrio, were convicted on Thursday of seditious conspiracy for plotting to keep President Donald J. Trump in power after his election defeat by leading a violent mob in attacking the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
The jurors in the case failed to reach a decision on the sedition charge for one of the defendants, Dominic Pezzola, although he was convicted of other serious felonies.
The verdicts, coming after seven days of deliberations in Federal District Court in Washington, were a major blow against one of the country’s most notorious far-right groups and another milestone in the Justice Department’s vast investigation of the Capitol attack.

CB Marcus Scott announces commit. Transfer from Missouri. REALLY good player with 4 years to play. Cal could have a HUGE weekend with more transfer commits this weekend. Cal might actually be good in '23, yo.
Just curious - maybe I missed this. Did that task force overseeing the Cal/UC Berkeley brand evaluation ever come up with something? Wasn't it supposed to report out recommendations sometime soon?
BERKELEY – The California lacrosse team had its season come to an end Wednesday with a 7-5 loss to Arizona State (6-12) in a Pac-12 Championship quarterfinal matchup at California Memorial Stadium.
The Sun Devils held a critical edge in free position shots, making three of their six while Cal had twice as many attempts but was only 2-of-12. The other team stats were nearly identical with Cal holding slim advantages in shots (30-28), ground balls (22-17) and draw controls (9-7), while Arizona State just edged the Bears in shots on goal (17-16), caused turnovers (7-6) and saves (11-10). Both teams committed 14 turnovers.
BERKELEY – The 26th-ranked California women's tennis team begins play in the NCAA Championship first round on Friday at 11 a.m. CDT/9 a.m. PDT in Austin, Texas, where the 12-9 Golden Bears face 30th-ranked San Diego (12-10) for the second time this season.
This marks the Bears' 40th appearance in the NCAA Championship.
BERKELEY – The eighth-seeded California beach volleyball team is set for the 2023 NCAA Championship from May 5-7 in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Golden Bears will face ninth-seeded Long Beach State in the first round on Friday at 8 a.m. PT.
Making their second-straight appearance in the tournament, the Bears enter the weekend following their highest Pac-12 Championship finish in school history. After sweeping Arizona State, Cal earned its record-breaking 27th win of the season, upsetting No. 3 USC 3-2 to move on to the semifinals. A rivalry match with No. 8 Stanford awaited the Bears there, and they did not waver in sweeping the Cardinal for the first time this season to advance to their first Pac-12 Championship final. The incredible run came to an end with a 3-0 loss to No. 1 UCLA in the last round.
BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team announced the signing of senior transfer McKayla Williams from Gonzaga University to its roster for the 2023-24 season.
A 6-foot-1 guard from Los Angeles, Williams appeared in 88 games for the Zags with 34 starts over her three-year career.
BERKELEY – The California softball team travels to the desert for the final Pac-12 Conference series of the season on Friday-Sunday at Arizona.
The Golden Bears and Wildcats are set for a 7 p.m. PT first pitch at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium on Friday. Saturday's game begins at 6 p.m. and the series finale gets underway at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Friday and Saturday's matchups will air on the Pac-12 Networks with Sunday's contest carried on Pac-12 Arizona.
BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team announced the signing of incoming freshman Anastasia Drosouni from Thessaloniki, Greece, to its roster for the 2023-24 season.
"We're thrilled to welcome Anastasia to the team," Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. "She will be part of a foundation that will help us build not only for next year, but also the future. Anastasia is a quick and athletic guard who brings versatility on the offensive side of the ball and size and aggressiveness on the defensive side. She is a great addition to our circle."
BERKELEY – The California baseball team travels to Southern California this weekend for a Pac-12 showdown with UCLA. The three-game series between the Golden Bears and the Bruins will begin Friday at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. All three games will be streamed on the UCLA Live Stream and fans can also follow along via live stats at Stabroadcast.com.
Cal (18-23, 6-15 Pac-12) is coming off a loss at Santa Clara on Tuesday night. The Bears are currently in 11th in the Pac-12 standings but are just a game back of leapfrogging Utah and Washington State for a spot in the top nine for the Pac-12 Championships. UCLA (24-16-1, 10-9-1 Pac-12) is currently in sixth in the Pac-12 standings. The Bruins are coming off a 12-3 loss at the hands of UC Irvine on Tuesday night and have gone 3-7 over their last 10 contests.
BERKELEY – Senior right fielder Kade Kretzschmar has been named the Dick Howser Trophy Player of the Month by the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Kretzschmar had a blistering month of April in which he slashed .462/.488/.885. He pounded out 16 extra-base hits including seven doubles, a triple and eight home runs. He scored 19 runs and drove in 23. In 19 games played in April, he had a Pac-12 Conference-leading 12 multi-hit games - including seven games with three or more hits. Against lefties, he hit .474, against righties he hit .458. With runners on base, he hit .425 (17-for-40).
BERKELEY – California will make its first NCAA Men's Golf Regional appearance since 2019 as it earned an at-large bid to the Morgan Hill Regional on Wednesday. The Golden Bears will be the 10th seed in the 13-team, 54-hole regional, hosted by San Jose State on May 15-17 at The Institute Golf Club, just 70 miles away from Berkeley.
The top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team from at each NCAA Regional site will advance to a field of 30 teams and six additional individuals that will play in the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on May 26-31.
What was your favorite restaurant when you were a child?
We rarely ate out but when we did it was usually an all you can eat buffet. There was one on MacArthur in Fruitvale called George's that had a lot of Chinese food. Another in San Leandro but I can't remember the name.
The San Leandro buffet - Pipers. Loved that place!
Sigh, 6-7 McDonald's - we didn't really eat much out (at least with the kids - I think my parents might have gone out without us).
Sam's Hofbrau, Sacramento. Back in the day there two or three in the area. Understand the one on Watt burned up in Feb. also understand it had gone down hill.
The one by the Coliseum was a family favorite.
I loved The Spaghetti Factory and both Westlake and Original Joe's. And Celia's in Burlingame.
El Charro in Lafayette. Loved that garlic butter dip stuff they gave with the chips
Probably Pizza Junction because they had the 2nd floor with video games.

i miss that place. it shut down right?
Shut down and repurposed into retail.
Yeah I think that and Skates went out of business.
Oh I take it back. I think it was HS Lordships that closed down.
H's Lordships did close down. That place had been declining for decades.

CB Marcus Scott announces commit. Transfer from Missouri. REALLY good player with 4 years to play. Cal could have a HUGE weekend with more transfer commits this weekend. Cal might actually be good in '23, yo.
I think we got enough DBs now. Let's get OL, LB and QB.
the rest if offense I think. Several OL, a WR or 2, maybe RB for depth and a TE if we can grab the North Texas kid
This one was a bit of a surprise. And if we land the 3 guys who we're targeting, I'm pumping sunshine so hard.
Who are the main 3 targets?
More than 3, Holmes. As many as 7 although that would be redonk and shouldn't be assumed
Just curious - maybe I missed this. Did that task force overseeing the Cal/UC Berkeley brand evaluation ever come up with something? Wasn't it supposed to report out recommendations sometime soon?
