I'm sure they will spin it otherwise, but IMO this was a disaster for the union. Big pay raises were already on the table before the strike began, and on the various other "common good" items that their leaders claimed they were continuing the strike for, all they got was some MOUs that are (1) non-binding and (2) lay out stuff that the district was mostly already doing anyway. And for that, kids lost 8 days of school while the union got pilloried in the press and alienated families. If I were in that union I'd want new leadership.
The linked article is behind a paywall. So I went behind a different paywall (sfchronicle.com) and read their reporting. Here's an interesting excerpt -
The district will now crunch the numbers and submit a plan to cover the cost of the contract, Castro added. Castro’s office has not yet reviewed the financial feasibility of the agreement and will only do so after the union and school board have formally signed off on the agreement.
Which raises the big question in my mind - why is OUSD agreeing to a contract they haven't scored? The reputation of managerial incompetence is well-deserved.
Maybe it's standard practice for OUSD. It isn't standard practice for all governmental entities, I can tell you that. EBMUD negotiates contracts with its unions every four years. Management doesn't agree to contract provisions, benefits, or salary increases without having scored it first.
That's because the Board of Directors will not approve a budget that they can neither understand, explain, or defend to the ratepayers. The contracts and the cost of labor are a driver of operating costs and, therefore, the rates.
Same thing should apply when OUSD explains to the State of California how they're going to pay for the contract.
Yeah, I have no idea. In that Chron article the state regulator didn't seem to think there was anything strange about this process, but I'm not knowledgeable either way.

Having endured a case of hiccups for a mere 2+ days (around Christmas 2021), this is no fun. It's funny for about the first 2 minutes. After that, not so much.
LOWELL – The No. 1 California men's rowing team had another outstanding weekend of racing, securing the Pac-12 Championship title for the second year in a row. After winning the 2V8+ race, The Golden Bears had a three-point lead in the standings going into the final race as they split the 3V8+ and freshmen 8+ races with Washington, leaving it up to the varsity eight crew to bring home the title.
In the V8+ race, Cal and Washington were even through the start but the Bears we able to build a deck lead in the opening 500 meters. Cal continued to push and opened a bow to stern lead through the halfway mark. The Bears didn't let up and grew their lead to open water in the third 500 meters, managing to finish four seconds ahead of Washington in a time of 5:34.673 to secure the Pac-12 Championship.
That's an impressive margin over UW's boat, given its open water the Huskies have experience on. Record heat in the valley this weekend, I wonder if/how that factored in?
LOWELL – The No. 7 California Golden Bears women's rowing team put themselves in contention to take home the Pac-12 Championship as they were just 4.5 points behind Stanford and Washington heading into the final race, but came away with third place at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Oregon on Sunday morning.
In the varsity eight race, Cal jumped out with the leading pack behind Stanford and Washington and had open water ahead of the rest of the field. The Bears fell further behind the Cardinal and Huskies with open water separating them but maintained control of the third position through the halfway mark. Cal was unable to make up the ground and finished third in a time of 06:20.778.
WALNUT – California track & field closed out the second day of the Pac-12 Championships in good shape, adding another two podium finishes to its total and qualifying six additional athletes to Sunday's finals. Currently, Cal's women are third in the standings with 33 points, while the men rank fifth with 24 points.
The women's hammer throw, a standout event for the Golden Bears as of late, featured another set of powerful performances. Senior Anna Purchase earned her second Pac-12 podium finish, the Bears' first of the day and third of the competition, with her throw of 68.38m (224-4). Freshman Audrey Jacobs made the final and scored for the Bears after launching the hammer to a fifth-place distance of 61.10m (200-5), a mark that ranks ninth in program history.
BERKELEY – Runs were abundant as both sides provided plenty of offense Saturday. In the end, the Cal baseball team made more noise as the Golden Bears defeated Washington State 16-10 to even up the series a game apiece.
Cal (22-24, 10-16 Pac-12) matched season highs in runs scored and extra-base hits. The Bears also scored 16 in the win over Ohio State on Mar. 4. Every Cal batter recorded at least one hit with Dom Souto leading all players with four hits. He finished the day 4-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in. It is Souto's 13th multi-hit game this season, but first career four-hit game. Max Handron remains red-hot, he went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Rodney Green Jr., Carson Crawford, and Jack Johnston all hit home runs and all three drove in three runs. Kade Kretzschmar went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI.
STOCKTON – The No. 3 California women's water polo team nearly fought all the way back from a four-goal second-half deficit in Friday's NCAA Quarterfinal against No. 8 Princeton, but couldn't get over the hump falling 11-9 at Douglass Eberhardt Aquatics Center.
The Golden Bears (19-10) scored a myriad of long-range goals throughout the game, including three by sophomore Rozanne Voorvelt. They cut the lead to one on three occasions in the final eight minutes, but the Tigers (30-3) had an answer each time.
An eight-run eighth inning helped send the Oakland Athletics to an 11-3 loss to the Texas Rangers Sunday afternoon at the Coliseum.
JP Sears’ afternoon got off to a rough start as he hit Marcus Semien to start the game. Robbie Grossman followed with a two-run home run off the foul pole in left to stake the Rangers to an early lead.
It’s fitting that the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks ended with a show of speed. They had been roadrunner-ing around all weekend, letting out a quick meep-meep before kicking up a flake of turf and chasing down a fly ball in deep right-center.
Defensively, offensively—I’ll admit it—the Diamondbacks are kind of a thrill to watch.
LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts continued his hot May, hitting a two-run home run in the Dodgers’ 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, finishing off a three-game sweep of the Padres.
Betts started the scoring for Los Angeles in the third inning, following a Miguel Rojas double with a home run to right center.
I used to like the guy! Fun and exciting player to watch. But doing this twice in a matter of a few months? What a fucking imbecile. He should be suspended for a year. Also regardless of what his suspension is, the timing for him career wise could not possibly be worse. All this right when he was hitting superstardom. Will cost him 8 figures in lost endorsements I bet. And justifiably so!

A document describing a foreign government’s military defenses, including its nuclear capabilities, was found by FBI agents who searched former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and private club last month, according to people familiar with the matter, underscoring concerns among U.S. intelligence officials about classified material stashed in the Florida property.
Some of the seized documents detail top-secret U.S. operations so closely guarded that many senior national security officials are kept in the dark about them. BERKELEY – The California softball team will begin its postseason road in Oklahoma where it will compete in the Norman Regional, along with the host No. 1 seed Sooners, Missouri and Hofstra.
The Golden Bears are making their first postseason appearance since the 2018 season and 34th in program history.
Cal begins the four-team, three-day event at 4:30 p.m. PT on ESPN+ vs. Missouri, an at-large selection from the SEC. The Tigers went 34-24 in 2023.
WALNUT – The morning dawned warm and muggy at Hilmer Lodge Stadium, but California track & field sophomore Mykolas Alekna had no issues whatsoever with the weather.
"I feel good," he said after a few warm-up throws.
It was true then and it's true now. At least we have new coaches who seem an order of magnitude more competent than their predecessors. And our presumed QB1 is more mobile which could, in theory, keep defenses more honest.

One of the few who can play at a power 5 (or even mid major) level

Washington receiver Taj Davis transfers to Cal
So ummm if the line in even near average, this offense could be amazing. Lots of skill talent
I feel like we said the same thing last year.
It was true then and it's true now. At least we have new coaches who seem an order of magnitude more competent than their predecessors. And our presumed QB1 is more mobile which could, in theory, keep defenses more honest.
Every season is a primrose path until the action starts and we are forced to accept the hard reality.
😢
This year we have new coaches….
[checks calendar] Ah, right on schedule

I wasn't saying the same thing last year TBH. I thought it could be good enough to give us a winning season, but not above average
The size and productivity is like having another Mavin Anderson on the team.
Had a 62 yard TD catch against Oregon in the final minutes last season.
Having Michael Penix sure helped…we don’t appear have one of those yet, but hopefully soon….
Go Bears!!!

Should have made that left turn at Albuquerque
ISWYDT.
He was kinda a hard player to assess. Was definitely more of a project than a proven OL.
Oh? Nice add if true

WR room seems pretty decent despite the loss of J Mike.
