How’s your exercise regime going? What’s something you’ve been focusing on?

Expand full comment

About the same as my marriage went.

ups and downs w/ motivation but the goals are

- strength training about 3-4 days a week just keep the muscles strong and active as i get older. no specific goal other than it "would be nice" to be able to do ONE UNASSISTED PULL UP before i die!

- indoor riding about 4 days a week, 2 interval training days, one longer ride, one SoulCycle.

- tennis once or twice a week, but not sure if that counts as exercise regimen even though it certainly is exercise.

As an extreme ectomorph, I hear you about the pull up. Not that I do the strength training you speak of.

Speaking of riding, I've been checking in periodically on the Giro that I can get on beIN TV in the evening. Not the same listening to commentators other than Phil Liggett and Bob Roll.

Dang, way to crush it. That is quite a bit. I am trying for two heavy strength training days, with 1 or 2 hot sculpt class per week, run twice per week, and at least one MTB ride, if not more. Could not do this without work from home as I can double up on running and lifting on some days. It is still hard to fit it all in...I have too many goals I guess.

Expand full comment

I tried running for the first time since last August . . .it was slow and stiff. Going to keep at it to get more fluid and that should increase speed and fluidity.

Going well. Always do cardio and work on the core.

I have focused on my glutes because I inherited no-butt and bad-back syndromes from my dad. I've been focusing on a good technique deadlift. Work has been slower over the last month, so I've had the luxury of being able to go frequently and for longer periods.

Expand full comment

i am about to hit a wall w/ dead lifts. seems like if i get above a certain weight then my back gets tweaked and i have to back off.

so hopefully strengthening some of those other muscles will help get to the next level

What is exercise? With my achilles repair, I haven't done anything. Now that I've out of the boot and start PT on Thurs, I'm going to try to go on walks and ride an exercise bike gently.

Stuck in a rut. I go out for a run everyday but I keep telling myself I need to get back to some stretching/yoga and light weight work but the latter two never happen.

Expand full comment

Ha! Never run, stretching and yoga all the time.

I run as well and do some low weight high rep upper body stuff but I think I need some sort of stretching thing too, like Kevon Looney, as I have more and more aches/soreness as I get older

The longer the debt ceiling nonsense goes on, the more angry I am with the Biden White House.

It is political malpractice to tacitly ignore the Constitution when it enables the opposition to paint you into a corner and/or erode, damage, or destroy the meaning of the full faith and credit of the United States.

Expand full comment

I’m not sure the 14A thing is rock solid, but I agree with you, I would just go for it. Just hold a presser and say you are going to pay the bills regardless of the debt ceiling bc the debts were lawfully incurred by congress and the 14th Amendment requires you to honor them. If they don’t want so much debt they need to pass laws reducing the debt, not skip out on their bills. It is reasonable shot at permanently ending the hostage taking, which is crazy btw. Just the idea of holding a gun to the head of the US economy as a way to get your demands met should be unconstitutional.

Expand full comment

If the 14th Amendment isn't rock solid, then impeach every Justice who votes to effectively invalidate the 14th Amendment. Clearly, they've violated their oath of office.

I would by the way, take the approach you've outlined and adopt an attitude of no fear because I'm fulfilling my oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. MAGA folks don't care about preserving, protecting and defending the Constitution or the American republic, economic power, national security, or military might: they want to burn it all down.

Expand full comment

I like the argument, but I think the response is that the debt limit is also imposed by Congress and so is valid and binding and within their rights to impose as the ones in charge of taxing and spending. So arguably a debt is not “authorized by law” under the words of the 14A if Congress doesn’t raise the debt limit to pay it. I don’t agree with that response, but it is a non-frivolous response to the argument that the 14A requires the president to pay a debt.

Expand full comment

Congress can impose any debt limit it likes, it doesn't override the 14th Amendment. Meaning, that if Congress authorized debt in the past, the US Treasury remains responsible to make payments on that debt. It's effectively the credit card argument - Just because the interest charges keep increasing the debt doesn't mean you don't pay it.

In the past, debt limit crises have effectively forced government shutdowns. What's being talked about now is far worse - default, which has never reared its ugly head before. The GOP knows that they cannot win a shutdown fight. So they've upped the ante by threatening default. The only worse thing than that is actually playing along with it.

Expand full comment

I agree with all of this. My concern with this is what happens during the time in which the inevitable lawsuits start to come to block such a move. Of course it would make its way to SCOTUS.

Expand full comment

What would you do different?

Expand full comment

If I were Biden, I would have Yellen pay all obligations of the federal government and tell Congress, "The 14th Amendment says the obligations of the federal government shall not be questioned. You want to stop the payments? Sue me."

In other words, put their backs up against the fucking wall. Come prepared to politically destroy those GOP motherfuckers for attempting to destroy the economy. Make it so the Supreme Court doesn't dare support the MAGA nonsense.

It would definitely put the GOP on its heals by wresting away the leverage they have at the moment.

Yeah, not to defend Boebert but CNN could have done a much better job in presenting that graphic. I found it a bit confusing on first glance/view.

Expand full comment

Agree but if you are taking the step of publicly using the graphic to make a point, you should read it more closely

Expand full comment

I agree and that goes for both Boerbert and especially CNN. It seems like CNN put out a confusing and somewhat misleading graphic. Why not present the days/numbers of the week in order from left to right or descending from top to bottom.

Expand full comment

Point taken.

But now, after the Trump Town Hall, I'm leaning heavily in the direction that CNN doesn't give a fuck about presenting information in a way that is straightforward. CNN cares first and foremost about ratings. If that approach shreds the fabric that holds together this democratic republic, then oh, well.

Athletics fall short in series opener against Diamondbacks 5-2

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/5/15/23725076/athletics-diamondbacks-5-2-rucinski-kelly-ruiz

On Monday, May 15, the Arizona Diamondbacks came to visit the Oakland Coliseum and the homestanding A’s. This was game one of a three-game set, their only series in 2023. The A’s sent struggling righty Drew Rucinski to the mound to face the D-backs’ right-hander Merrill Kelly. Rucinski entered the game with an 0-3 record and an 8.15 ERA, while Kelly, after eight starts this season, is 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA.

The Diamondbacks jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Geraldo Perdomo hit a two-run homer to right field. Corbin Carroll walked to lead off the third inning; then Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. followed with a long homer to left centerfield. That doubled the score to 4-0. After three innings Rucinski had already thrown 68 pitches, which did not bode well for the duration of the game.

Max Muncy hits two home runs to regain MLB lead, Carlos Correa gets roundly booed at Dodger Stadium

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/5/16/23725138/max-muncy-home-runs-dodgers-carlos-correa-booed-cheater-chants

LOS ANGELES — Before Monday night’s game turned wild, with six ties or lead changes in the final five innings, the Dodgers had an early lead thanks to Max Muncy snapping out of his slump with two home runs.

The Dodgers third baseman has been sick for over a week, which contributed to him hitting just two singles in 28 at-bats since his walk-off grand slam on May 3.

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/5/16/23724236/phil-bickford-game-dodgers-trayce-thompson-walk-off-walk-twins

LOS ANGELES — A lot of the focus of Monday’s game was on fingers, both the blistered and covered right index digit of pitcher Noah Syndergaard and the figurative middle finger extended by Dodgers fans to Carlos Correa. But the series opener turned into a messy, back-and-forth affair, ultimately becoming The Phil Bickford Game in LA’s 9-8 win over the Twins in 12 innings at Dodger Stadium.

Bickford has been referred to as having a rubber arm in the past, but on Monday he was stretched further than ever, pitching three innings and throwing 48 pitches, all in extra innings to close out the win.
