RALEIGH, N.C. (WRAL) - The North Carolina Senate voted along party lines Wednesday to ban anyone from wearing masks in public for health reasons, following an emotional debate about the wisdom of the proposal.
The A’s dropped their third straight game to the rival Astros, falling to their division rival by a final of 3-0 on a night the bats could only muster two hits.
Right-hander Aaron Brooks, only just recalled today, made the start for the A’s in tonight’s contest. This is Brooks’ third different stint with the club, not something you see everyday in today’s game. He’s been putting up solid numbers for Vegas and the club needs starters so the club tapped him for tonight.
There is a special thing that happens in professional sports, and baseball is certainly no exemption. When a team is falling and flailing, they desperately reach for something, anything, to catch hold of. Occasionally they’re lucky and, like an unrealistic protagonist in an action film, grab hold of a ledge with the tips of their fingers. Fingers that suddenly have free soloist strength, and a ledge defying all that we know of architecture to stay intact long enough for the hero to pull themself up and out of danger.
The Dodgers put up a solid fight considering everything but lost the chance at a sweep with a 4-1 loss to the Giants on Wednesday at Oracle Park. It’s just the middle of May, but we can confidently affirm the Dodgers won’t play a game under less favorable circumstances than the one they just did, concerning the pitching matchup at hand.
RANCHO SANTA FE – California will return to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships for the first time since 2019 and 13th time in program history, punching its ticket with a second-place finish at the Rancho Santa Fe Regional at The Farms Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon.
BERKELEY – California's athletic communications staff was honored with the Super 11 Award on Wednesday, given annually to the best performing departments in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
The accolade was awarded based on the athletic communications staff's efforts during the 2023 football season.
BERKELEY – The California softball team opens play at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional vs. Southern Illinois on Friday at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The Golden Bears and Salukis are set for a 12:30 p.m. PT first pitch on ESPN+ with Kevin Fitzgerald and Aleshia Ocasio on the call.
BERKELEY – Cal alumnus H. Michael Williams, BA '82 P'22 knows as well as anyone the inspiring combination of athletic accomplishments and academic acumen that Cal student-athletes possess.
It is with that perspective that he and his wife, Jeanne, decided to make a $600,000 pledge to the Berkeley School of Education (BSE) in support of its Cultural Studies of Sport in Education master's program – led by Cal Athletic Study Center executive director Dr. Derek Van Rheenen, who is also a full adjunct professor in the BSE.
I don't know if this was mentioned while I was out of the country but Mia Mastrov has left Cal's women's basketball team. She's not entering the portal but -- rumor has it -- concentrating on being a social medial influencer. She completed her degree -- with academic honors -- in three and half years. She had a year of eligibility had she wanted to use it. Mia never emerged as an offensive threat but was a good rebounder and an excellent defender especially when the Bears would press. Yet some games she'd only get a few minutes or even none at all. I don't know that she ever had her heart fully in playing basketball team, in some ways it seemed like being on the team was a tool to improve her social media presence. I'm curious to see what she does in the future but given that she's now got a Cal degree and comes from a wealthy family and has half a million Instgram followers and 700,000 TikTok followers I'm sure she'll be fine. Interesting time at Cal.
Caitlin Clark, the much followed and ballyhooed rookie out of Iowa, had ten turnovers and shot 5-15 from the floor in her team’s twenty point loss to start the WNBA season vs. the Connecticut Sun. MEANWHILE, 33-yr old Golden Bear legend Layshia Clarendon, in the first game of the season for the Sparks, scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds, 10 assists and zero turnovers in thirty minutes. Triple Double!
we watched game instead of the Knicks playoff game at the same time.
saw some stat about Alyssa Thomas (Conn Suns) who had her 12th career triple double. only 9 others ever by any player. i suppose it is a hard thing to accomplish in only a 40 min game.
we have tix to the Caitlin Clark show vs the NY Liberty this Sat at Barclays Center.
Also, 1994 MBB at the Coliseum arena. UCLA was undefeated and #1, the arena was the most electric I'd ever felt it. We led the whole game and Monty Buckley went off.
1986, MBB. Broke a 52 game losing streak to the Bruins while the entire Harmon crowd yelled "CHERRRR-YYYLLLLLLL" over and over again to the world's largest ears.
I was at that game too. Yelled Cherrrr-yyylllll for 2 hours straight. Good times, although I sympathize on how tough it might have been to be Reggie that night. Not that I care….just sayin.
Cal breaking the 18 yr losing streak in football in 1990.
i think that was the game where the team came down thru the stands to start the game instead of thru the tunnel like they normally would. one of the loudest times at Memorial that i remember for a game.
that felt like the real beginning of the good streak that ended w/ the Citrus Bowl win the following year.
i like Biscuits and gravy. never had it until i moved to IN for grad school. now i usually get it if it is on the menu and have at least one go-to place in NYC when i want some, Bubby's.
I've usually only gotten it at bad hotels with the free breakfast. During Covid I started making biscuits, sort of successfully. To me they still weren't as good as somewhere like Bojangles. And I found a pretty good sausage gravy recipe which I've made twice now I think. MMM...makes me want to make it when I get back home.

Gonna be super fun to have your surgeon not masked up while he's cutting you open. Can't wear a mask until he gets to the rally tonight.
seems like people should protest by wearing a mask!
Republican supporters of the ban said it would help police crack down on protesters who wear masks
Trick or treat 365 days a tear.
Joke is you GOP bozos. I'm part of an organization where there is a perpetual ritual that has me a wear a mask whenever I want.

I wonder if this is a Masters program partially targeted towards athletes.

I think we did discuss her last week. Good for her to graduate in 3.5 years with honors.
I think her future is an influencer.
Her future is as an heiress. Everything else is just a hobby.
Did you mean that her future is to be an influencer, or that her future is influencing her?
Hmm. How is an influencer different from what we used to call a columnist? Herb Caen, George Will, Lesley Visser...
to be an influencer. Probably get paid to do instagram post and tweets about their products, and stuff like that.
Go Bears!!!

Triple OT at Memorial in 2000. I carried Boller around the field on my shoulders! (He was VERY sweaty)

90 vs UCLA as HSB said.
91 @ UCLA. The Russell White flu game (and Doug Brien 47 yd FG to win).
23 @ UCLA. Total domination for the last Pac-12 game against UCLA.
The 2006 football game. Height of Tedford mania, The Bears were riding high. A sold out Memorial Stadium. Desean Jackson with a 72-yard punt return.
