Noda grand slam, Ruiz walkoff hit win it for the A’s

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/5/16/23726574/noda-grand-slam-ruiz-walkoff-hit-win-it-for-the-as

It wasn’t easy — it definitely wasn’t quick — but the Oakland A’s got the walkoff win against the Arizona Diamondbacks today.

Starting for the A’s was their Opening Day starter, rookie Kyle Muller, who’s quickly running out of chances to figure it out in the majors. Going into today’s game, he carried a 7.34 ERA/5.75 FIP with only 6 more strikeouts than walks.

Phillies again forget how to catch baseballs, Giants again remember how to win

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2023/5/16/23726467/giants-phillies-recap-alex-cobb-casey-schmitt-michael-conforto-joey-bart

When the San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on Monday night, I wrote about how comforting it is when other teams exhibit the bad habits that your brain has tricked you into thinking only the Giants do. I used the Giants (perceived) inability to hit well with runners in scoring position as an example to set up the game story: the Phillies utter silliness with their gloves.

I thought about both of those things on Tuesday night as the team’s had a showdown in the deep depths of a foggy NorCal night.

Dodgers fall short in loss to Twins

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/5/16/23726499/dodgers-gassed-clayton-kershaw-bullpen-twins

LOS ANGELES — Simply wishing that they wouldn’t need to use the bullpen heavily for a second straight night did not work out for the Dodgers, who ran out of gas in a 5-1 loss to the Twins on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers opted not to call up a fresh arm for Tuesday’s game after six relievers combined for eight innings on Monday night. That marked the second straight start for Clayton Kershaw needing to go deep to provide relief for a taxed bullpen.

They also really missed Otto Porter Jr., and giving Anthony "Roofie" Lamb big minutes over Kuminga was idiotic and prime Kerr stubbornness.

Plus he (and Moody) were clearly in a different boat than Wiseman, whose inexperience required consistent minutes to really even get to be a passable pro. JK and MM showed they belonged, enough so to at least warrant minutes ahead of a G-Leaguer like Lamb.

I put hot and spicy mustard on as well, along with a dash of ketchup, and have been doing so since I had my first TD with my Pops before a trip to Evans when I was 4...that's nearly 45 years, and as such has created my own institution.

I will continue to do so, regardless of what you believe, goldenone...with all due respect. ;-)

I do not use ketchup, except on french fries and tater tots. Ketchup does not make it to my burgers or my hot dogs or sausages. Those three are Dijon mustard territory if I'm putting a spreadable condiment directly on burgers, hot dogs, or sausage.

One random factoid about ketchup that sticks with me all these years - Richard Nixon reputedly liked ketchup on cottage cheese. Gives me shivers just thinking about it.

SF Chron has repeatedly reminded readers that Newsom publicly pledged to appoint a Black woman to a US Senate vacancy should a vacancy appear while he is governor.

The obvious question, then, is would that person be Barbara Lee? or someone else, like Karen Bass (Mayor of LA)? Shirley Weber (Calif. Sec'y of State)?

EDIT: just in case it's not obvious, selecting Lee in such a scenario would upend the 2024 US Senate race to succeed Feinstein. It would give Lee the power of incumbency, conceivably forcing Porter and Schiff out of the race and "electing" Lee in 2024.

Expand full comment

As a side note, can I say that I find the pledges to appoint someone of a certain race kind of cringey? You can just wind up doing it anyway, but saying it ahead of time just gives ammo to the conservative argument that you're doing a diversity hire for someone unqualified.

Expand full comment

It is very cringey. It's also a very awkward stance to take, but that's politics. In a sense, it's kind of like eating a Philly cheesesteak while campaigning in Philadelphia. You hope you don't ruin your shirt and tie while doing it.

The best ESPN 30 for 30 IMO is the one about the Phx Suns gorilla. At one point he said he had to quit because he “got lost in the gorilla” - he no longer was able to distinguish between himself and the gorilla character.

I think about that sometimes with people like Holmes or Trump who are doing a character - they seem to get themselves in trouble when they get too far lost in the gorilla, so to speak, and lose sight of reality. Although Holmes also I think does have a personality disorder - I don’t think at bottom there is anything there that is really her. Just a collection of artifices created by (clearly) a psychopath as a means to an end.
