Back in 2000, I had bought some NVDIA stock for under a dollar per share. My thesis was that the struggling chip company made good chips despite being on the wrong side of an engineering moat dominated by Intel and that killer applications like PlayStation and XBox would help grow the market. I ended up having to sell the stock in order to purchase my first condo. I eventually sold that condo for almost no profit after I moved post-dot-com-bust. Meanwhile, I just realized that the stock's value has grown nearly 500x and its market cap is almost one trillion. I guess I can't win them all.

Yu-Gi-Oh

My son and his friends were huge Yu-Gi-Oh fans back in the day. It was such marketing genius. Before Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon had swept the world with an animated series that had a strong card game tie in. Yu-Gi-Oh took it a step farther, making the card game into the animated series.

But, Yu-Gi-Oh came and went, and Pokemon is still with us.

A’s use opener, Waldichuk still earns loss

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/5/24/23736982/oakland-athletics-seattle-mariners-austin-pruitt-ken-waldichuk-esteury-ruiz

With losses piling up as quickly as animosity towards John Fisher, the Oakland A’s decided to switch things up today to try to get some sort of something going.

Harkening back to the brighter days of 2018, the A’s revived the opener strategy with Austin Pruitt getting the “start” against the Seattle Mariners and Ken Waldichuk relieving him. Part of the strategy worked, the other didn’t.

Hopes of sweep miss glove

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2023/5/24/23736220/mlb-final-score-giants-twins-recap

With the call up of Casey Schmitt, the development of J.D. Davis’s glove at third, Thairo Estrada’s range, Brett Wisely’s support at second, with all of that rooted in Brandon Crawford’s foundational play, the Giants infield has become one of the better defenses in the league with 9 outs above average—good for fourth in the Majors and fifth when taking into account the work of the outfield.

With the ground-balliest of pitchers on staff, team and fans alike have been enjoying the fruits of a solid—sometimes even trendy—infield in their recent climb towards .500.

Wasted opportunities prevent rare Dodgers sweep in Atlanta

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/5/24/23736864/dodgers-comeback-braves-home-runs-walk-off-bullpen

The Dodgers certainly had a lot of chances to secure their first series sweep in Atlanta in 35 years, on a night they out-hit the Braves 12-5. But enough missed opportunities cost them in a 4-3 walk-off loss to conclude the series at Truist Park in Atlanta.

A frustrating night of good process for the Dodgers' lineup

Through the first three innings, in every single one, the offense managed to get multiple base runners aboard against Bryce Elder, and without fail, he always got out of it.

Two of Donald Trump’s employees moved boxes of papers the day before FBI agents and a prosecutor visited the former president’s Florida home to retrieve classified documents in response to a subpoena — timing that investigators have come to view as suspicious and an indication of possible obstruction, according to people familiar with the matter.

Guilty as fuck:

Trump and his aides also allegedly carried out a “dress rehearsal” for moving sensitive papers even before his office received the May 2022 subpoena, according to the people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a sensitive ongoing investigation.

Prosecutors in addition have gathered evidence indicating that Trump at times kept classified documents in his office in a place where they were visible and sometimes showed them to others, these people said.

[T&F] Trio Of Bears Qualify For NCAA Championships

https://calbears.com/news/2023/5/24/track-field-trio-of-bears-qualify-for-ncaa-championships.aspx

SACRAMENTO – California track & field approached day one of the NCAA West Preliminary with high hopes on Wednesday as the first group of its program-record 36 entries prepared to compete against hundreds of the nation's best at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.

Each regional meet comes with high stakes – only 12 athletes in each event can clinch a spot to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Field athletes only receive three attempts instead of the usual six to qualify, while track athletes (save for the 5000m and 10000m) must qualify through a first round and a quarterfinal.

[WROW] Bears Ready For NCAA Championships

https://calbears.com/news/2023/5/24/womens-rowing-bears-ready-for-ncaa-championships.aspx

BERKELEY – The No. 9 California women's rowing team is set for its 23rd straight NCAA Championships and will be the ninth overall seed in the regatta when it competes this weekend at the Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, New Jersey. All races will be streamed on NCAA.com.

"We've had a productive week and a half training post-Pac-12s," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "We've taken the time to finalize racing lineups and work on what we learned from Pac-12s. Our last day of hard work was yesterday (Monday), so now we just work on resting, recovery and keeping things sharp and relaxed. I think we all feel like we've done everything we need to do in order to be fully prepared to let it fly on Friday."
