Then again, I had a bit of disappointment when I went to a chapel to see Tintoretto's works when in Venice. It was just some bad luck due to overcast and maybe too late on the day, it was too dark to see the painting well due to its dependence on only natural light.

Stopping at a stop sign. Perhaps this is a hot take, but I think if a law is rarely followed, then it's a dumb law. It should be changed to "approach a stop sign at a speed where you can easily stop if you need to"

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

It is a hot take. But I understand where you're coming from.

I know that very few folks come to a complete stop at a STOP sign. I even understand why. I even do it sometimes myself. But I do slow down enough that I can come to a complete stop by simply following through on braking; I never have to stand on the brakes.

And that's the point - the STOP sign laws ensure that the vast majority of motorists will slow down enough to keep pedestrians safe. Even so, way too many pedestrians are still injured and killed by careless drivers. Personally, I think that way too many folks have a driver's license because they're way too cavalier about driving.

Sorry to rain on your hot take.

Expand full comment
WilderThanGene's avatar

If a pedestrian is killed because of failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign its because the motorist didnt even see the stop sign (or pedestrian), not because they saw it and chose to slowly roll through it.

Expand full comment
Cugel's avatar

eh, even more so - I'm something of a speed demon (at times) - but I realized one time that you really SHOULD stop all the way in urban environments. One time (Oakland Chinatown) I was doing my usual thing of almost stopping, but maybe creeping at 2 mph - problem was the A-pillar blocked my view of a pedestrian who was moving at about 2 mph as well - I didn't hit them, but I realized it was a real issue.

Game #47: A’s blink first in pitching duel, lose 4-1 to Rangers

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2022/5/26/23143802/game-47-as-lose-rangers-montas-trivino

The A’s were on the wrong side of a pitching duel at the Coliseum tonight, losing to the Texas Rangers 4-1 in the series opener.

The starting pitching on both sides was excellent, as each went seven innings and allowed just a single run. The A’s bullpen fell apart in the ninth, though, allowing three runs in a rare meltdown from the ‘pen.

With both teams' aces going tonight, it looked like spectators were in store for a pitching duel. And that’s exactly what happened in this game, with Frankie Montas facing off against Martin Perez for seven innings apiece tonight at the Coliseum.

Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts lead latest Dodgers offensive barrage

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/5/26/23143818/fredde-freeman-mookie-betts-dodgers-offense-diamondbacks

Freddie Freeman led a potent attack, collecting four of the Dodgers’ season-high 24 hits and scored double digits for the sixth time in a 14-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday night at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Freeman hadn’t homered since April 24, but even with the long ball drought he was still having a stellar month. He entered Thursday with an .849 OPS in May, and his RBI double in the first inning scored the first run of the game.

Then in the second inning, with one out and two runners on, Freeman unloaded on a pitch from Humberto Castellanos.

Muncy possibly headed to IL with elbow pain after injury that ended his '21 campaign... may help explain his brutal start.

*******************************

May 26: Max Muncy sits with left elbow discomfort

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Muncy has been dealing with some left elbow discomfort after banging against the wall in the series opener against the Nationals on Monday. Muncy, who suffered a torn UCL in his left elbow last season, could head to the injured list for the first time this season, but that decision has not yet been made. I've watched a bunch of his ab's...for the most part, he has the look of a player that had an abbreviated spring training but is close to turning it around: his knowledge of the strike zone and plate discipline remains exceptional, as he's on pace for 131 walks...he's just missing pitches. Tough to say if the lack of production is due to the mush-ball MLB is using, or weakness because of the arm injury, but maybe an IL stint would be helpful if for nothing else to clear his head.

How would you propose the open primary being done?

I think you make elections federally funded and run by FEC. I would do a first round and a runoff but I think Yang prefers ranked choice. I am just not sure people understand ranked choice that well - it gave us Jean Kwan after all

I despise ranked choice with the fire of a thousand suns for two reasons (1) those who support ranked choice are practically evangelical about it and (2) as simple as it seems, most people cannot grasp the implications of ranked choice voting and its uses.

As for (2), the 2010 Oakland Mayoral election should be Exhibit A as to why ranked choice voting is a bad deal. It resulted in Jean Quan being mayor and Quan should never have been anywhere close to being mayor, EVER. Not just because of her record as mayor, but because she simply didn't have the chops to be mayor.

Runoff elections are best among the viable options, but certain "progressives" want ranked choice because they abhor runoffs.

All good suggestions, I would prefer ranked choice but I understand how it works but I also recognize a lot of people don’t and they end up screwing it up.

Yup, or having armed guards. I mean it makes sense. If you are some rent a cop with a pea shooter you aren’t going to confront a guy in full body armor wielding a machine gun. The Republicans basically want to turn the country into a war zone. No government guarantees of safety, just arm and protect yourself

the guy wasn't even wearing body armor - just an empty plate carrier

Adjusting their armor plates. Apparently the police budget is 40% of the town's budget.

This right here. The NBA and the NFL are easy targets for the alt right and GQP.

I noticed they haven’t mentioned the Yankees/TB PSA they did about gun violence, which seems about white.

It’s just an empty deflection. Anything to avoid engaging on the actual substance.

It is a perfect GOP potpourri though - criticize domestic black people about dealings with godless foreign non-whites. If he only worked in sex trafficking somehow it would been a hall of fame comment

[BASE] Bears lose 3-1 to #4 OSU in Pac-12 Championship. They left the bases loaded in the 5th and got the tying run to bat in the bottom of the ninth, but the Beavers pitching/defense was solid in preventing the Bears from threatening much. The Championship is double-elimination, so they play #20 UCLA for the second time in three days today in a time of this writing that is still TBD.

I think Bears got a decent shot at winning today, but it's hard to see how this pitching staff, with guys already used and unavailable, can possibly win two games over Oregon State tomorrow. But let's get there first.

The Beavs are so solid. Clutch 2-out hitting in the decisive T5th inning plated a couple, and Hjerpe is an absolute stud...he limited the Bears lefty-heavy lineup. Good game tho...
