Parents of the DBD: do/did your kids have PE every day?

Expand full comment
author

No. 1 semester of PE in four years of HS.

Expand full comment

Like 1.5x per week. Urban school with small play yard. City field next door, which they rent several times per week. But that’s to cover like 8 grades. Granted I grew up in the burbs – not that far from HSB and HAG – but it seems such a small amount.

Expand full comment

No. I want to say it was 1 to 2 days a week, most likely 1. No 1 went to St Elizabeths (around 1999-2003) in Oakland and maybe he had it a couple of days a week. In Louisville for 5th grade and on it was once a week I think (Catholic school). No 2 and 3 were definitely once a week.

Expand full comment

I wish! It’s just 2x a week and not so much by design as by the fact that they don’t have the money for a full time PE teacher so in our district the PE teachers cover multiple elementary schools. Also the PE teachers’ salaries are funded entirely by donations from parents, and we have been getting desperate emails from the school district about how the donations are a bit low so they may have to let one of the PE teachers go. Prop 13, baby!!! What a stroke of genius. When these kids become overweight and diabetic and need to go on meds, who will pay for that?

Expand full comment

I just heard a story on the radio that Alexandria, Virginia may have teachers of PE, music, and art have to cover more than one school in the future.

Expand full comment

Yup, our music teachers all cover more than one school. We have no art teachers

Expand full comment

By the way, I this is just one manifestation of a failure begging for a reframing of how we think of kids. Currently, our government views them simply as a liability on the balance sheet, and so the focus is just on cost control. In reality, our citizenry is our biggest asset, and we need think of spending on childhood education as an investment that (a) will pay dividends in the future, and (b) is necessary to compete with other countries in an increasingly globalized and competitive landscape.

Expand full comment

yes, 10th grade they still do. but they dont have to do anything physical if they dont want to!

also, it is just "go play basketball" as opposed to any sort of organized effort around playing or learning basketball.

i had PE thru 11th grade and it was graded HARD. i got B's in PE all thru high school because of all the various forms of athletic achievement (or lack thereof). and it was certainly from no lack of trying ...

Expand full comment

It definitely wasn't like when we were in school. We had it every day and it rotated sports every 2-3 weeks.

Expand full comment

As I look back, PE is where I realized I kind of liked and was decent at running. I can remember both in junior high and in HS the PE teacher getting pissed off at us and making us run all period. It never bothered me.

plus during block scheduling we go extra long periods to actually get good at something.

Physical coming up on Thursday. I lost 20 pounds of fat on advise from my last physical six months ago and put on about 10 pounds of muscle since then, but I suspect that I will still get a chin wagging about my blood work. I mean, he won't be wrong. I enjoy pork way more than I should.

We had Schintzel steaks last week, covered with thin layer of bread crumbs, fried with a thin layer of oil, eaten with a super tasty flavored sour cream thing, and purple cabbage & apple salad to go with it.

Tasted very very good, and not at all unhealthy.

Cabbage and apple salad. Sounds healthy to me.

Also, not all fried, that then roasted on a metal grid in the oven to finish.

As an Arsenal fan (for many decades) I deeply resent and am angered by this remark. Arsenal supporters are among THE BEST in England, far outshining the yobs at such places as ManU, Chelsea, Millwall, Leeds, Newcastle and other clubs followed by neanderthals. Arsenal itself is a relatively progressive clubs in such areas as its early embrace of players of color and from other countries, it's support of LGBTQ fans etc.

Sorry. It was meant to be a joke. I don't think badly of Arsenal fans, nor do I doubt their efforts for positive social impact. Jokes are more impactful when they are specific, so I googled "who are the worst fans in the EPL" and multiple articles came up Arsenal - so I ran with it. So, you have my apology at my glib drive-by hack.

Expand full comment

Fully accepted. I tend to over-react and be a drama queen. Surprised that Arsenal fans would come up. Within England the clubs I mentioned along with Wet Ham and Stoke have the worst reputations. BTW I could tell you stories about my encounters with opposing fans while living in England in the seventies and my encounters in my many visits over the years including last month. some other time....

LEEDS!!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?????

Expand full comment

Leeds had a bad rep back in the day. All the teams had their "firms". I wouldve put Millwalll and West Ham as the most notorious but they ALL had baddies. I was bemused to see fond remembrances from older Oxford United fans about their days in the "South Midland Hit Squad" and causing various opponent firms to "run". Quite the culture...
