There isn't an alternative. Trying to found a rival league/association would be daunting. But it might be the best thing to do for the future of the game. I see the Saudi's control as staining the PGA, possibly irreparably. Sportswashing is something I thought was largely confined to the Olympics and soccer (FIFA), although there have been reprehensible characters in all of the US's major sports (baseball, football, basketball, and presumably, hockey).

Kentucky's Rupp Arena is enormous - 23, 500 seats and they fill it. Syracuse's Carrier dome is a lot bigger, but it's too big because it's also a football stadium.

A different riff on a multi-purpose facility. When I think of multi-purpose facilities, I usually think of baseball/football stadiums (the Coliseum being the last of this variety) or basketball/ice hockey arenas (Oracle Arena was such a facility until the California Golden Seals left and merged with the Cleveland Barons).

The Carrier Dome is just different, but it also portended the advent of NCAA Final Fours being held at NFL stadiums.

The non-conference games in Honolulu and Baton Rouge are a nice touch.

EDIT: UCLA's schedule is just more evidence that adding other West Coast schools (Cal, Stanfurd, Oregon, UW) to the B1G will carry its own weight

Expand full comment

The schedule is why I think there will be some pressure to add in the 4 teams. Could you imagine the non-revenue sports having this travel for every week or every other week?

I also read the Big 1X and the SEC are looking at UNC and UVa. So basically it isn't just the midwest anymore and not just Penn State and Rutgers.

I don't know how the non-revenue sports are going to manage this, especially those that tend to have midweek matches

Jun 14, 2023·edited Jun 14, 2023

Salient point. Which is another (under the radar) reason why Cal, Stanfurd, Oregon, and UW are odds on favorites to be invited to join the B1G. It will cut down on the travel outside of the West Coast.

Expand full comment

We're getting to the point where there will be three big power conferences with large memberships. The MWC tried it but it fell apart. I think the B1G, SEC, an Big XII will make it succeed because the money will paper over a lot of problems. But it's still tricky because geography (read: travel) will play a role.

Expand full comment

That Ohio State game will be a “home” game in name only. I imagine Ohio State fans will take over the Rose Bowl the way they did Memorial when we played them.
