Tobacco is the common term for “Nicotiana” genus plants in the the Nightshade family. There is more than one type of tobacco - at least 67 different species. The most common one is Nicottiana tabacum, a native to subtropical America. Nightshades commonly produce alkaloid salts - some of which are interesting drugs or toxins. For example, tobacco produces nicotine. Others produce atropine, scopalamine, and hysosyameae. The borrachero tree (Angel’s Trumpet) in South America produces scopalamine, which is used to make the “scariest drug in the world”
