I'm interested in going to work in DC for a bit before coming back to the job I love/coworkers I like/family/pension, and some coworkers suggested the science policy fellowship with AAAS, which I'd always thought was for freshly-minted PhDs. It turns out that mid- and late-career folks can apply, too, it's just...it would be a big pay cut. Soooo I don't think I'll go that route.
I did see a position at NSF that might be a good fit, so I'm thinking about applying 😬
In the gross portfolio, I'm about 0% bonds, 5% cash, 50% real estate, and 45% equities. I'm leveraged up to my eyeballs - the max that the banks will allow. The debt and real estate is an inflation hedge, which I think will persist for years. It also pretty much guarantees that I'll move every two years for the foreseeable future in order to realize $250k in tax free gains each time.
One of my nephews is going to be a senior in high school - his parents are MIT/Stanford MBA and MIT/UCLA Masters in Chemistry - and he has absolutely zero interest in college. All he does all day is play roblox - my cousin/cousin-in-law are so frustrated. They don't even care if he can't get into an "elite" school or wants to do something besides college - its more that he has given it zero attention and hasn't expressed an interest in doing anything.
His grades are ok - but probably more on a Cal State track than a UC track.
Listening to music, endlessly filling and emptying containers, taking all the dishtowels and stacking them neatly then moving them all to another part of the house and stacking them neatly there. Toddlers are weird...
We've started doing that recently and it's going pretty well. She also likes emptying the dishwasher and putting away utensils (albeit messily, but I'll take it--emptying the dishwasher is one of my least favorite chores).
If I could hire someone just to empty things and put them away tidily my life would be at least 7% better. Unpack my suitcases, put away the groceries, unload the dishwasher, put away the laundry (I'll happily do and fold it).
both girls have been on a competitive rock climbing team for the last 5-7 years. it is not something we really knew much about but have fallen into a very nice supportive community of kids and parents. they go to 3 hour practices 3-4 days a week and have 3-4 weekend competitions across the season, which is a relatively light parental commitment.
while male/female compete separately, they all practice together, which is nice. and everyone thinks it is about long arms and upper body strength but really it is about core strength and mostly strategy on how to position yourself and bodyweight to get the maximum leverage.
I really hate the Karen/Danny storyline. You had a fling with a hot older lady (plus mom of your dead childhood best friend) JUST LEAVE IT
But I love the storylines being set up to collide at the end of the season, Ellen's presidential campaign, Margo running NASA and Molly being on the outs, Ed vs Dani on the first successful Mars Mission.
I was right in the middle of a text message saying how much I loved Ed and Dani's relationship when he went and had that awful talk in the Outpost. What an asshole.
Ha! We quite liked Obi Wan Kenobi episode 5, but had an absurd and funny argument afterwards. I was defending the faith of the Jedi masters, claiming that the "true religion" is in the original movie, my wife & daughter were trashing the Jedi, based on other shows, which I described as false, created by heretics.
Also, finished The Offer, which while not perfect (cough, cough Giovanni Ribisi) was very enjoyable, hope it comes to some other streaming service.
Started Under The Banner of Heaven on Hulu, based on book by Jon Krakauer. Has been discussed on previous DBD AV threads. Hardly a puff piece for LDS…yikes,
For an apolitical, historical account of Mormonism, I'd highly recommend the book Mormon Country, written by Wallace Stegner in 1942. This book provides fascinating insight into Mormon history, including its extremely collectivist, bordering on socialist tendencies at the turn of the 20th Century. It provides insight too on why the Mormons, to this day, are so accepting of immigrants into the US. Though it largely tells the tale of the Mormons' ability to settle parts of the interior West picked over by others, it is really a piece of American West, non-fiction literature. And of course, the book is filled with eloquent, Stegner prose that will have you rereading multiple passages.
Does it explain why they didn't allow blacks to be part of the religion until 1978?
Does it explain why they aspired to be a "white and delightful" religion?
Does it explain why they massacred 140 settlers in Mountain Meadows by pretending to be Indians and slitting the throats of every man, woman and child over the age of 5 and then kidnapping the ones who wouldn't remember?
All these criticisms of the Mormon religion are spot on and absolutely fair. To the extent one can look at the Mormon phenomenon--which really, it is a pretty remarkable phenomenon as far as religions go--through an objective, cultural study, Mormon Country does an amazing job. Of course, written in 1942, it does not probe issues of racism that plagued all of America at that time. Stegner does discuss the "tragedy" that is the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Again, this book is really for a fan of those who want to study the modern development of the West. It isn't meant to be a promotion or defense of the Mormon religion, nor is it a religious book. If you live in the West and are a student of the West, you quickly realize that the Mormons have left their fingerprints all over the place and that no history of the development of the West from about 1840 through 1930 is complete without discussing the Mormons.
I started it as well, and also the documentary about Jeffs.
To be fair to the Mormons though, I think you can do a similar historical takedown of basically every religion. All you can do as a person alive on the Earth today is be a good person, and every Mormon I know is a super standup straightlaced guy
I've never met someone nicer than a Mormon. I also am extremely envious of the strength of their community, though the dogma of Mormon faith is terrible.
as the great great grandson of a 4th wife who got put out on the street when bigamy was outlawed, this sums up my attitude pretty much. Most of them are really nice, their community is rock solid, their religion sucks and their politics suck
Heh, I really really wanted to write a DBD about our trip to Provo in 2018, it was both weird and a lot of fun, and the Cougar fans were the nicest fans I've ever been around.
Exactly - totally agree. There are similar nuts in ALL religious walks of life…I do have a friend who formally left the LDS Church, though…it was quite a process.
Yes, at least she did. There was a process, and my friends family was none too pleased with the stir it created amongst their friends and community.
We had another LDS friend here in Santa Barbara who was originally from Idaho who decided to no longer practice, but did not formally leave - members of the LDS community in ID came to “visit” him here in CA multiple times.
Not a huge fan of any organized religion, but to each their own. Personally, the one ideology I find most puzzling is that of the Jehovah's Witness, though my feelings may be influenced by a former boss, who was a bit of a prick and whose family were all devout JW's...they seemed condescending towards non-JW's in their beliefs, tho not sure if that was THIS family or a JW thing...assuming it was just that family and that all other JW's were totally nice people.
I feel like neither of those religions has had the impact on non-adherents as American Evangelicalism, as demonstrated by the forthcoming Supreme Court decision and the general level of fuckedness our country is headed for.
I spent all day and night at the airport as my flight kept on getting delayed due to weather. There is nothing quite like the collective groan of a crowd at an airport gate when they announce that the last plane out has been cancelled. All flights out for the next two days to NY were fully booked.
Travel yesterday was a super cluster. I laughed as I kept an eye on my "on time" flight out of Philly, as the inbound aircraft still needed to do a complete round trip to MCO before becoming our flight, and was more than 90 minutes behind on the takeoff to MCO. My colleague who was flying to Des Moines got routed to Charlotte, then to St Louis, then to KC, and then had to rent a car and drive 2.5 hours to get home.
I saw the Bay Area based producer of Dave Chang's podcast trying to fly back to the Bay from Boston, and she rented a car and bought a flight out of JFK
Yeah. I feel bad for all those folks panicking because there were no other flights. People were looking for train and bus tickets. And people renting cars for the 10 hour drive.
At least it was weather. With the prices everyone is paying for flights I'd be upset as well. I think airlines might only be giving credit to those that don't end up taking the flights.
I am a Chicago Cubs diehard, they just suck so bad it is hard to watch them. Seeing Schwindel do the softball pitcher thing is basically the only enjoyable part. You need to focus on the farm so that it is constantly is producing talent, but obviously Theo/Jed did not do that.
J6 Committee revisits the conversation between Trump and Pence, when the Cheeto asked Pence to overturn the election and Pence refused saying it was illegal and he had no basis to do so. Trump insisted and when Pence continued to refuse. Trump called him a pussy and said "I don’t want to be your friend anymore if you don’t do this." This conversation was brought up in Woodard's book, but is now being corroborated by others like Ivanka. This is trying to establish criminal intention.
[WaPo] Over the past two days, the revelation from the Eastman email release is that Ginni Thomas may have been more involved than previously known. WaPo is now saying that Ginni Thomas "may" have been THE person to introduce Eastman to Trump. I put "may" in quotes because she was acting with a larger sub-stack group. Eastman was called in to support a plan by a sitting Congressperson to challenge the election in the House of Reps and set up alternative electors.
United States: New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Seattle, San Francisco/Bay Area and Los Angeles/SoFi Stadium
Plenty of soccer fans are going to be disappointed when they figure out that Levi's Stadium is not in San Francisco but all of the WC events and most hotels are....
[WWE] WWE's Vince McMahon has stepped away from his role as Chairman/CEO after an investigation of sexual improprieties against several employees. One included having an affair with a paralegal, doubling her salary, handed her off as a sexual play thing to another company officer, and then paying her millions to stay quiet. A subsequent investigation uncovered a slush fund for hush-money. McMahon's daughter will take over the reigns, which seems odd since she was an officer who reportedly knew Vince's alleged shenanigans. Also, if you're driving to Darien CT from NYC, you can't miss seeing WWE's headquarters in Stamford, CT just off the 95.
I was amazed when my dad died that he still was getting billed $22 a month for dial-up. Elder abuse. Class action suits claimed aol was making $300 million per year on the scam
My parents got AOL for a long time, too. I had been living abroad for a while and i when I came back I visited them and immediately canceled it for them. My dad was flummoxed re how to connect to the internet without it.
Virgil Abloh (the late designer for Off White) his whole aesthetic was Helvetica/Helvetica and then the quotation marks as a deconstruction of fashion. He made it pretty big, starting as a "Friend of Kanye" and then launching his own brand, big time co-ops with Nike and other brands and then rising up to become Design Director at Lous Vuitton from 2018 to 2021. He passed away late last year from cancer at only age 41.
I watched the first like three minutes, Dubs down by a million, then the wifi on the plane cut out. When I got back on, five minutes had elapsed, Dubs had scored 22 straight and were rollin'.
PQTM, section about Steph coming off the bench to start the playoffs after his injury.
As the public address announcer performed player introductions prior to each of the first four games against the Nuggets, Curry found himself in an unusual spot -- standing near Kerr on the bench while Poole joined the four starters near center court. As the teams readied themselves for the opening tip, Kerr would turn to Curry and tell him, "If you work hard enough, one day you too can start an NBA playoff game."
Curious what others think. As someone who would root for the Warriors against any team but the Kings or the Celtics, the best part of the Warriors Title run is that it marks another year that the Lakers and their insufferable fanbase did NOT win a title.
I saw the headline and thought that he must be from somewhere that hates Boston teams. As a Warriors fan, I don't give a single thought to the Celtics unless we're playing them. No particular satisfaction in beating them over, say, the Sixers or the Heat.
Insufferable? As a Lakers fan, I'm hella glad the Warriors denied the Celtics a championship - but man did you heard their fans BOOOOING their team in that game?
Nothing personal against you, Cugel, but yes, insufferable. I was at Game 7 of the 2002 WCF. The Lakers and their fans will always be the worst for me.
He's an absolute clown...I've seriously only agreed with one article he's ever written - the one in which he ripped Ben Roethlisberger because Big Ben is an a$$hat that got away with sexual assault twice.
I agree with you. It's like a Giants fan saying the best part of the Giants beating the Red Sox in the WS is that Red Sox lost. I think they'd be more giddy that the Dodgers didn't make the playoffs.
Or, is it more that LeBron didn't make the playoffs. As someone that rooted hard for the Celtics in the 80s, I think for me it's more that LeBron tried to assemble a superteam and failed, hard. Ask my kids about my hatred for LeBron and also Harden. My Lakers hate isn't as strong now as it was in the 80s though.
I will happily admit that I'm a Warriors bandwagon fan. Didn't watch as much NBA from maybe 2000-2015 other than maybe some of the playoffs. But watching the way the Warriors moved the ball around 2014-2015 made me a fan.
Honestly, even though the Dodgers beat us, when they lost in the next round, the world felt alright again. There is pretty much no better feeling on earth than the Dodgers losing.
It seemed like their comeback was when the Warriors settle for 3s or quick shots (looking at you Klay), but they settled down, moved the ball or a Steph PnR and started making shots again.
Helluva player, but Klay looked absolutely AWFUL in the 2H last night...the W's scored 4 points in the final 6 minutes of the 3Q....totally left the door open for BOS, but the Celts couldn't walk through it.
And the Celtics would not stop throwing the ball all over the place - the Warriors had their hands on a lot of balls (GPII and Wiggins especially) but there were a TON of unforced turnovers. Unfortunately our boy Jaylen was guilty of a ton of them. He's got to get that handle tighter over the summer
He may not be the best player ever, but he changed the game more than any other player I can think of in the modern era. And in a good way too - the high scoring, spread out attack that every team has emulated is so much more fun to watch than the “hold the ball and dump it in the paint to Shaq/Duncan/etc” that prevailed before
it is nice to see a team reload w/ younger talent like Poole and Wiggins and the supporting cast similar to the ones that fueled the first run for championships.
not sure they can afford to keep everyone or if there is enough playing time for everyone to go around.
I'm wondering if Looney or Wiggins will take less to stay. But after seeing a short with Wiggins and Poole both realizing they're getting bags maybe not.
Kind of confused....Wiggins is NOT a free agent...he's under contract for the 2022-2023 season, so unless he's got a player opt-out, his bag is already packed, so to speak...
Unless there's different information out there than this:
They'd be talking extension this offseason. I heard a rumor they're discussing one. I think the Warriors realized how important he is given Klay isn't as good on D as he used to be. He's on his last year of his last max contract next year.
Although I'm giving Klay a pass for his struggles on O this season. let's see how he is after a full off-season of training. If he's inconsistent next year, then I guess that's who he has become. He won't be getting the max after that.
I doubt they take less, but the Warriors may sign them anyway if it is just a tax issue. The NBA cap stuff is a black box to me - you need a phd to figure it out
I think the Warriors try to get GP2, Looney (I think this was his last year), and maybe Otto to come back. I think Looney's best fit is on this team. GP2 has played his way to a 2 or 3 year multimillion dollar contract so it probably depends on how much he really wants to be here. Same with OPJ.
Guy's report on the updated EA NCAA Football edition. Reportedly, they'll try to get each stadium personalized, including fight songs and common cheers like "Roll on you Bears", "Hey Cal Alumni, GO!", and "Jesus Christ, our offense fucking sucks"
Interesting. Guess we're in for a bunch of Seven Nation Army.
it's cool that they want to try to get the helmet sticker tradition as well as the end of the 3Q traditions. Would be pretty cool to see Jump Around at Wisconsin.
Guess Cal will be at the lowest tier for compensation.
idk if it still holds true, but its been mentioned he wants/wanted to play with his brothers and with one of them committed to Ole MIss, along with the elimination of West coast schools, it seem inevitable at this point he'll end up in Oxford.
I set high importance on them being active. And we have what I could call fun study time. Then again I only have a toddler so grain of salt

Plenty of soccer fans are going to be disappointed when they figure out that Levi's Stadium is not in San Francisco but all of the WC events and most hotels are....
Disappointing that the DC/Baltimore area missed out
Resurrect RFK you cowards!

Look at that, aol.com is still alive and kicking
I was amazed when my dad died that he still was getting billed $22 a month for dial-up. Elder abuse. Class action suits claimed aol was making $300 million per year on the scam
My parents got AOL for a long time, too. I had been living abroad for a while and i when I came back I visited them and immediately canceled it for them. My dad was flummoxed re how to connect to the internet without it.
WTF. I must be old, because I don't understand this apparel. Also, why is LA in quotes?

Maybe it's an attempt to avoid a lawsuit over a trademark violation. Dunno. I'm just spitballing here.
While taste in fashion is entirely subjective, I feel that I am not wrong in stating that this is objectively fucking stupid
I read in the Dodgers blog that the "" is what Off-White is known for. I guess they do that for all their apparel.
The helevtica and quotations yeah - the "meteor holes" not so much. But the hats are already going for $400 on StockX
Oh I didn't notice those. Insane
Lorenzo Cain fields the ball, probably wishes he used his glove instead.

I can feel the pain from my couch.
Padres beat the lowly Cubs 6-4 and take sole possession of first place in the NL West.

They scored 37 runs in the 3 game sweep.
A's scratch out 4-3 win at Fenway behind Paul Blackburn.

WAAAAARRRRRRRIOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRS!!!
I watched the first like three minutes, Dubs down by a million, then the wifi on the plane cut out. When I got back on, five minutes had elapsed, Dubs had scored 22 straight and were rollin'.
THE HEART WON!!!!
NBA Finals 2022: The seven moments that supercharged the return of the Golden State Warriors' dynasty

I find this take to be terrible. https://www.sfgate.com/warriors/article/The-best-part-of-the-Warriors-title-is-that-the-17248583.php
Curious what others think. As someone who would root for the Warriors against any team but the Kings or the Celtics, the best part of the Warriors Title run is that it marks another year that the Lakers and their insufferable fanbase did NOT win a title.
It is terrible. One of the smallest things I have read in a while, even if the writer's politics might be similar to mine.
Where do I go to get a refund of the two minutes I wasted reading that?
I saw the headline and thought that he must be from somewhere that hates Boston teams. As a Warriors fan, I don't give a single thought to the Celtics unless we're playing them. No particular satisfaction in beating them over, say, the Sixers or the Heat.
I thought he must be from New York.
He's a Minnesota guy who lives in central Pennsylvania now.
Drew Magary is a bufoon.
Drew Magary is a dick.
Insufferable? As a Lakers fan, I'm hella glad the Warriors denied the Celtics a championship - but man did you heard their fans BOOOOING their team in that game?
They're the most obnoxious fanbase.
Nothing personal against you, Cugel, but yes, insufferable. I was at Game 7 of the 2002 WCF. The Lakers and their fans will always be the worst for me.
Can't we all just agree that the Lakers AND the Celtics have the most insufferable fans?
Yeah totally. Though doesn’t Drew Magary live in like DC? He is basically a rando internet troll that gets picked up as a columnist by various papers
Rec'd because I can't help but understand the feeling.
Yep, ditto on the Dodgers. If you area a fan of Norcal teams, your greatest rivals are in SoCal, not on the East Coast.
Believe me, I was happy the Giants weren't good for the 7 years after 2014. Still, they won 3 in 5 so I can't say shit.
That was a fun one because it seemed inevitable through the whole 4th quarter. Even when Boston cut it to 9, it felt like they had no chance.
Tatum alternated between seeming utterly unstoppable at times to completely underwhelming at others...
I was listening to sports talk on the radio as I fell asleep and he was pretty much getting roasted by everyone.
He made up for it by being great on defense, though.
Seemed like Steph, Klay, and Poole were looking to hit that big "kill shot" three but it wouldn't come. So Steph just started going to the basket.
True though he was easily their best player. The Dubs are somewhat similar with the TOs at times - it is a byproduct of playing fast
*Celts comeback
Dubs!!!!!
Steph Curry might be Top 10 all-time when this is said and done.
He may not be the best player ever, but he changed the game more than any other player I can think of in the modern era. And in a good way too - the high scoring, spread out attack that every team has emulated is so much more fun to watch than the “hold the ball and dump it in the paint to Shaq/Duncan/etc” that prevailed before
That's his best argument for being a Top 10 all-time player: he changed how the game is played and warped defenses like no one else.
It's a no brainer in my mind that he is top 10 all time, from influence to accomplishments, the resume speaks or itself
The question is who gets dropped out of your top 10. That's the hardest question.
or even Harden ball which is proving not a way to win championships.
"Freakin bum"

HOLY CANNOLI!
Klay's interview was great. Twitter fingers.
On the radio, there was an ad that started, "Hi, this is Klay Thompson." I wondered, "Is it really?"
Love Klay, but man, Game 6 Klay was nowhere to be found yesterday. I know he only recently returned, but he is not the player he was
He was pressing badly as well. A player NOT named Klay Thompson probably would've been benched during that 3Q...
No, he's not
Hoping another off season will get him back to where he was
Looney, OPJ, GP2.
it is nice to see a team reload w/ younger talent like Poole and Wiggins and the supporting cast similar to the ones that fueled the first run for championships.
not sure they can afford to keep everyone or if there is enough playing time for everyone to go around.
Unless there's different information out there than this:
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/andrew-wiggins-15353/
It's not like the NFL, where the salary cap is a myth and doesn't really exist.
4 championships in 8 years.
CAL
Guy's report on the updated EA NCAA Football edition. Reportedly, they'll try to get each stadium personalized, including fight songs and common cheers like "Roll on you Bears", "Hey Cal Alumni, GO!", and "Jesus Christ, our offense fucking sucks"
https://www.extrapointsmb.com/heres-everything-i-know-about-ea-sports-college-football-with-updated-info/
Any chance of getting Sweet Caroline in?
Go Bears!!!
Cal target Cameron Brandt set to visit June 24th. Cal, Stanford, Nebraska, and Michigan in the mix for the 4-star lineman. Washington is out.
Also, Jaden Rashada has reduced his list, Cal and Oregon no longer in the running.
Sigh

surprising no one
Ole Miss over Cal?
Smart guy.
idk if it still holds true, but its been mentioned he wants/wanted to play with his brothers and with one of them committed to Ole MIss, along with the elimination of West coast schools, it seem inevitable at this point he'll end up in Oxford.
get big coin for a year or two, if it doesnt work, transfer. If it does, keep collecting checks. Shrug... thats the road of the modern 5 star recruit
