For an apolitical, historical account of Mormonism, I'd highly recommend the book Mormon Country, written by Wallace Stegner in 1942. This book provides fascinating insight into Mormon history, including its extremely collectivist, bordering on socialist tendencies at the turn of the 20th Century. It provides insight too on why the Mormons, to this day, are so accepting of immigrants into the US. Though it largely tells the tale of the Mormons' ability to settle parts of the interior West picked over by others, it is really a piece of American West, non-fiction literature. And of course, the book is filled with eloquent, Stegner prose that will have you rereading multiple passages.
Does it explain why they didn't allow blacks to be part of the religion until 1978?
Does it explain why they aspired to be a "white and delightful" religion?
Does it explain why they massacred 140 settlers in Mountain Meadows by pretending to be Indians and slitting the throats of every man, woman and child over the age of 5 and then kidnapping the ones who wouldn't remember?
All these criticisms of the Mormon religion are spot on and absolutely fair. To the extent one can look at the Mormon phenomenon--which really, it is a pretty remarkable phenomenon as far as religions go--through an objective, cultural study, Mormon Country does an amazing job. Of course, written in 1942, it does not probe issues of racism that plagued all of America at that time. Stegner does discuss the "tragedy" that is the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Again, this book is really for a fan of those who want to study the modern development of the West. It isn't meant to be a promotion or defense of the Mormon religion, nor is it a religious book. If you live in the West and are a student of the West, you quickly realize that the Mormons have left their fingerprints all over the place and that no history of the development of the West from about 1840 through 1930 is complete without discussing the Mormons.

To be fair to the Mormons though, I think you can do a similar historical takedown of basically every religion. All you can do as a person alive on the Earth today is be a good person, and every Mormon I know is a super standup straightlaced guy
Not a huge fan of any organized religion, but to each their own. Personally, the one ideology I find most puzzling is that of the Jehovah's Witness, though my feelings may be influenced by a former boss, who was a bit of a prick and whose family were all devout JW's...they seemed condescending towards non-JW's in their beliefs, tho not sure if that was THIS family or a JW thing...assuming it was just that family and that all other JW's were totally nice people.
I feel like neither of those religions has had the impact on non-adherents as American Evangelicalism, as demonstrated by the forthcoming Supreme Court decision and the general level of fuckedness our country is headed for.

I spent all day and night at the airport as my flight kept on getting delayed due to weather. There is nothing quite like the collective groan of a crowd at an airport gate when they announce that the last plane out has been cancelled. All flights out for the next two days to NY were fully booked.
Travel yesterday was a super cluster. I laughed as I kept an eye on my "on time" flight out of Philly, as the inbound aircraft still needed to do a complete round trip to MCO before becoming our flight, and was more than 90 minutes behind on the takeoff to MCO. My colleague who was flying to Des Moines got routed to Charlotte, then to St Louis, then to KC, and then had to rent a car and drive 2.5 hours to get home.
I saw the Bay Area based producer of Dave Chang's podcast trying to fly back to the Bay from Boston, and she rented a car and bought a flight out of JFK

Listening to music, endlessly filling and emptying containers, taking all the dishtowels and stacking them neatly then moving them all to another part of the house and stacking them neatly there. Toddlers are weird...
We've started doing that recently and it's going pretty well. She also likes emptying the dishwasher and putting away utensils (albeit messily, but I'll take it--emptying the dishwasher is one of my least favorite chores).
If I could hire someone just to empty things and put them away tidily my life would be at least 7% better. Unpack my suitcases, put away the groceries, unload the dishwasher, put away the laundry (I'll happily do and fold it).
One of my nephews is going to be a senior in high school - his parents are MIT/Stanford MBA and MIT/UCLA Masters in Chemistry - and he has absolutely zero interest in college. All he does all day is play roblox - my cousin/cousin-in-law are so frustrated. They don't even care if he can't get into an "elite" school or wants to do something besides college - its more that he has given it zero attention and hasn't expressed an interest in doing anything.
His grades are ok - but probably more on a Cal State track than a UC track.
both girls have been on a competitive rock climbing team for the last 5-7 years. it is not something we really knew much about but have fallen into a very nice supportive community of kids and parents. they go to 3 hour practices 3-4 days a week and have 3-4 weekend competitions across the season, which is a relatively light parental commitment.
while male/female compete separately, they all practice together, which is nice. and everyone thinks it is about long arms and upper body strength but really it is about core strength and mostly strategy on how to position yourself and bodyweight to get the maximum leverage.

It seemed like their comeback was when the Warriors settle for 3s or quick shots (looking at you Klay), but they settled down, moved the ball or a Steph PnR and started making shots again.
Helluva player, but Klay looked absolutely AWFUL in the 2H last night...the W's scored 4 points in the final 6 minutes of the 3Q....totally left the door open for BOS, but the Celts couldn't walk through it.
He made up for it by being great on defense, though.
Seemed like Steph, Klay, and Poole were looking to hit that big "kill shot" three but it wouldn't come. So Steph just started going to the basket.
And the Celtics would not stop throwing the ball all over the place - the Warriors had their hands on a lot of balls (GPII and Wiggins especially) but there were a TON of unforced turnovers. They'd be talking extension this offseason. I heard a rumor they're discussing one. I think the Warriors realized how important he is given Klay isn't as good on D as he used to be. He's on his last year of his last max contract next year.
Although I'm giving Klay a pass for his struggles on O this season. let's see how he is after a full off-season of training. If he's inconsistent next year, then I guess that's who he has become. He won't be getting the max after that.

I think the Warriors try to get GP2, Looney (I think this was his last year), and maybe Otto to come back. I think Looney's best fit is on this team. GP2 has played his way to a 2 or 3 year multimillion dollar contract so it probably depends on how much he really wants to be here. Same with OPJ.

Curious what others think. As someone who would root for the Warriors against any team but the Kings or the Celtics, the best part of the Warriors Title run is that it marks another year that the Lakers and their insufferable fanbase did NOT win a title.
I saw the headline and thought that he must be from somewhere that hates Boston teams. As a Warriors fan, I don't give a single thought to the Celtics unless we're playing them. No particular satisfaction in beating them over, say, the Sixers or the Heat.

Or, is it more that LeBron didn't make the playoffs. As someone that rooted hard for the Celtics in the 80s, I think for me it's more that LeBron tried to assemble a superteam and failed, hard. Ask my kids about my hatred for LeBron and also Harden. My Lakers hate isn't as strong now as it was in the 80s though.
I will happily admit that I'm a Warriors bandwagon fan. Didn't watch as much NBA from maybe 2000-2015 other than maybe some of the playoffs. But watching the way the Warriors moved the ball around 2014-2015 made me a fan.

We've started doing that recently and it's going pretty well. She also likes emptying the dishwasher and putting away utensils (albeit messily, but I'll take it--emptying the dishwasher is one of my least favorite chores).
If I could hire someone just to empty things and put them away tidily my life would be at least 7% better. Unpack my suitcases, put away the groceries, unload the dishwasher, put away the laundry (I'll happily do and fold it).

One of my nephews is going to be a senior in high school - his parents are MIT/Stanford MBA and MIT/UCLA Masters in Chemistry - and he has absolutely zero interest in college. All he does all day is play roblox - my cousin/cousin-in-law are so frustrated. They don't even care if he can't get into an "elite" school or wants to do something besides college - its more that he has given it zero attention and hasn't expressed an interest in doing anything.
His grades are ok - but probably more on a Cal State track than a UC track.

Well, as much as my son loves wine, he's very much like me.
both girls have been on a competitive rock climbing team for the last 5-7 years. it is not something we really knew much about but have fallen into a very nice supportive community of kids and parents. they go to 3 hour practices 3-4 days a week and have 3-4 weekend competitions across the season, which is a relatively light parental commitment.
while male/female compete separately, they all practice together, which is nice. and everyone thinks it is about long arms and upper body strength but really it is about core strength and mostly strategy on how to position yourself and bodyweight to get the maximum leverage.
