Old Person Sports

So, I found a 40+ league in SF Japantown. Supposed to be eight 8-person teams. They are short four or so players. Who is up for some Wed evening hoops?

I played pick-up games there the last three weeks. Some pretty good players, but not super high level. (Altho most are better than I am!)

If so, can sign up here.

i suppose Japantown is too far for HAG ..

Expand full comment

annoying thing is that instead of just having seven teams (with bye weeks), they're delaying the start until we get the extra players. when I signed up, they were 8 players shy (so 7 teams). now they're in purgatory with only needing 4.

Golf and tennis seem like the two Olympic sports that seem kinda meaningless because it allows pros and they play nearly all year round anyways.

Expand full comment

I have become less and less enthused about the Olympics over time as it has lost it veneer of amateurism. But why stop with golf and tennis? Basketball, anyone? Baseball? Swimming?

Large sums of money are required for successful athletes to train so that they can (1) be selected to compete and (2) actually have a shot at winning their event.

Couple that with the exorbitant extortion of selecting host cities, the cases of doping, the use of the Olympics for nationalistic and political ends, and the billions involved in advertising, programming, and programming decisions and it gets very weird, confusing, and disappointing.

I preferred it when I was naive and in the dark about such things. Then, I could actually enjoy the Olympics.

Expand full comment

I actually like it as a competition of the best athletes as opposed to random amateur ones you’ve never heard of. As more and more sports professionalized, I think they had no choice but to do this

30 years ago today, OJ lead the LAPD on a low-speed chase. I've never seen more than a 1 second clip of this event because I was out of the country and it wasn't news overseas because he's not an international celebrity

It was completely gripping. I was supposed to meet friends for dinner, and about 30 minutes in I called them and said, "I'm gonna be late because I cannot leave this" and they were all, "SAME."

I really hope that I'm remembering this correctly, but living in Los Angeles, I remember watching it in split screen on channel 4 (the LA NBC affiliate) with the other half of the screen focused on the NBA Finals.

It was positively surreal watching that in real time.

CAR AND DBDer

our Subaru WRX is getting delivered today to daughter in Seattle.

we sent it on one of those car carrier trucks across the country. it would have been fun to take 5-10 days and do the drive. just dont have the time in my schedule currently to make that happen.

as a replacement we are going to buy a friend's Subaru Forrester for the other child to have as primary vehicle.

we got along just fine for 16 yrs w/ only one car and now in the last few years we have gone to owning 3!

Subaru has a color "cool blue khaki" - a muted/flat grey/blue color - that is the first car color (18%) to out-sell black, white, grey, or silver (collectively 80% of the US car market). Many other car manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon and copied a similar color for their models. Now that I've pointed this out, you're going to start seeing it everywhere.

I have long admired this color. Subaru still does it best. I will never not buy a black car, but I think that grey/blue is sharp.

I love the Subaru Rally Blue that the STI's had. Probably my 3rd favorite color behind the Skyline R34 GT-R Midnight Purple and the 95 Miata Merlot Mica.

I've seen it around here and there over the last two years or so. It reminds me of a variation on Ford's baby blue that was popular in the 70s and 80s.

that color is definitely popping up all over.

we (and two others) were in tents. other two were in pop-up camper-type things. Was a good site. our group site is where they apparently do weddings, so there was electricity and water spigots! a nice river 350 feet down a trail.

Father's Day wouldn't be complete without doing a typical dad activity, which I take to mean a task in service of one of my kids and/or Mrs Slug. So, for Mrs Slug, I made a run to TJ's to get items for Father's Day lunch over at CJ and Elle's.

For CJ and Elle, I fixed the inside door handle on their front door.

I didn't do anything for Double D, but I'll find something, probably before his birthday which is in late July.

Fantastic Father's Day weekend. Saw Inside Out 2 with the family (15/19). Went to the Isleton Crawdad Festival on Saturday (15/19) and had Father's Day brunch buffet at the El Torito in Milpitas (19/19) where I had my first Michelada.

It was all right. Beautiful weather. Reluctantly selling the lakehouse, so got it ready to show. Love the house/lake, but I want to go do other things and putting that asset to work as a revenue generator rather than a cost center will be helpful as we plan for early-ish retirement. But I did get to lounge in an inner tube and then eat BBQ ribs on Fathers day. Got a great call from the kiddo and a bird feeder as a gift.

Like millions of sons before who spent their Friday and Saturday disappointing their dads with ignored calls, missed curfews, and forgotten chores, only to come through on Sunday with a heartfelt hug and “Love ya, pops” that made up for all the weekend’s transgressions—the San Francisco Giants eased the sorrows of the last couple of days with a 13-6 win on Father’s Day.

Tyler Glasnow a bright spot on a dark day for Dodgers

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/6/16/24179443/tyler-glasnow-scoreless-shohei-ohtani-freddie-freeman-home-runs-dodgers-royals

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers bullpen badly needed a break after shouldering a heavy workload this week, and the team even called up two fresh arms to help ease the burden. But the biggest relief came from Tyler Glasnow, who dominated the Royals with nine strikeouts over seven innings in a 3-0 victory on Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

Saw Inside Out 2 on Friday (15/19). The original is easily my favorite Pixar film. The sequel doesn't pack the emotional punch that the original (or most other Pixar films) have, but it was still really entertaining. A teenager dealing with anxiety is a great platform for how a teenager deals with developing emotions. More funny than really emotional.

Yeah, it's quite good but doesn't quite deliver the same emotional stakes as the original.
