Special Juneteenth edition. It's not like I totally forgot it was a holiday when I was scheduling the DBD.

It is shockingly quiet at the lake for the 3 day weekend. My theory is that it doesn't have any mainstream traditions like other summer holidays so people don't plan for it.

Expand full comment

Also, a lot of people do not get Juneteenth off. This is the first year that my organization recognized the holiday and closed in recognition and celebration.

I feel in large portions of the country, a vast majority of the population is still unclear as to what the holiday represents…

Tell that to Lake Merritt

Nearby, but I avoid it.

i would agree. still getting into the social consciousness.

my wife has day off (Pfizer) and i do not.

our company at some point realized that they were a little out of step in not having it be a recognized holiday and sent out an internal email telling us to celebrate and commemorate and take the day off from our stash of unlimited PTO if we wanted.

Expand full comment

Not a holiday for us. Not likely to be one either, we are only closed 5 days a year.

I like the Juneteenth flag and I will have to buy one to fly next year. It should help trigger and thus own the corn flake cons in the neighborhood.

Cauliflower

Roasting + acid tamps down the sulfur taste and brings forward the nuttiness of its flavor. Very low in calories + a fairly neutral flavor = healthy, which means I make it all the time as a base for some type of sauce, topping, or spice. One of my favorites now is blended almonds, garlic, semi-dried tomatoes, Parmesan, and pink peppercorns.

My wife uses it greatly lots of time. Kinda a newish development.

Not generally a fan. though well prepared is perfectly adaquate.

I love cauliflower, it is so much better than broccoli.

I like 'em both!

I didn't used to like either. Now I like both, so agree.

I'm the other way. I like broccoli but don't like cauliflower.

Marak of Cauliflower with Tomatoes and Olives - a house favorite ...

https://spadesspatulasandspoons.com/2015/03/22/march-in-the-kitchen-marak-of-cauliflower-with-tomatoes-and-olives/

A Marak is a Moroccan vegetable stew. In her introduction to the dish Ms. Wolfert says “Moroccans often steam or pan-roast vegetables in order to preserve their sweet intense flavor and to endow them with a creamy texture. Here juicy bits of preserved lemon and ripe olives embellish pan-roasted cauliflower.” Being a big fan of cauliflower, and having a head in the fridge, I decided to try it. My usual method of cooking cauliflower is tossing with spices and roasting in a hot oven, so this dish was a departure from habit.

Why do people still say Burma? It has been Myanmar for decades now.

Expand full comment

Because no one wants to say Myanmarese python.

Expand full comment

i like how they will change an airport name but never its 3 letter code

Expand full comment

Eh,

I don't know all the details, but I think Myanmar is not the good name, it's the name the dictators picked (they've been around a while).

Expand full comment

my guess is that things that are "easier to say" are also "easier to remember".

but i am sure it is a lot more complex than that or that the previous statement is not as simple as just that.

The one that drives me crazy is when people say “Myanmar, formerly Burma”.

Since most people know where Burma is, and most don't exactly know Myanmar is, its a helpful reference.

Somewhere in Queens (theater, 15/19 WB). Ray Romano heads up this art house film about parents who try to salvage an opportunity for their chronically shy kid. Surprisingly good, but perhaps I am biased because the subject is about parent on the horizon of being empty nesters. Romano surprised me with his good acting.

Giants sweep D*dgers in LA over the weekend. Friday night they rallied to win in extra innings, Saturday was a 15-0 pasting and Sunday was a relatively pedestrian 7-3 victory. SF thus moved past their rivals into second place in the NL West.

[The Athletic] Draymond declines option now an unrestricted free agent

https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1670825084892717062?t=rooY7_w4Ec4qMGWHekr5kA&s=19

Not surprising. If he returns, probably will be a multi year contract at or below market value. Don't see a team taking him for what his option was. I assume Warriors would be given an option to match or come close.

What teams could use his D and playmaking ability without his O. Maybe someone like the Suns that have 3 scorers. I could see the Kings going for it. They need a Defensive presence and a big playmaker that just isn't PnR.

Expand full comment

Looks like he is asking for a 3yr deal to match with Steph's timeline

Expand full comment

That makes sense. It all depends on how much they're willing to give him.

I wonder if they'll try and do a Klay extension and have all 3 end at the same time.

There's an island in the Potomac near the Kennedy Center that I like to walk to and sit out and read. I went by yesterday afternoon and the gates to the bridge to the island was locked. After awhile a bunch of park police and park service vehicles came over the bridge. It turns out Roosevelt Island is bear (black, not golden) territory. Unfortunately, they couldn't find the bear yesterday so they set a trap and the island is closed for the time being. They plan to catch it, tranquilize it, and move it out to the boonies.
