Did you ever see the movie "The Abyss". In that movie, they use a technology whereby oxygenated perfluorocarbons are pumped into your lungs and you can breath underwater without the bends because of equalized pressure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6hw4dGhm8Y

It's actually been tested on a limited basis.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_breathing#Medical_treatment

Behold, the next step in scientific discovery.

https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/intestinal-ventilation-could-be-alternative-to-breathing

Wiata78's avatar

I haven't kept up to date on this technology. But why should that stop me? Let's see...

The process should work, but there are a few complications.

1. the available surface area for gas exchange for the intestines is less than half that as for the lungs. https://www.atsjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1164/rccm.202007-2973ED

2. Perfluorocarbons can supply oxygen, but it will run out, and have to be replaced with some frequency.

3. Perfluorocarbons can't carry away carbon dioxide, so that will eventually build up to a problematic level....hmm, this is mentioned in the wikipedia article you reference.

Liquid breathing was also used in 2000's Mission to Mars, by Gary Sinise's character. Supposedly the mission took place in 2020. Guess I missed it!

The ugly, dirty business of college football. NCAA Bylaw 15.5.1.7 allows a first year coach to cut scholarship players from the team. Three Florida Gators just got cut as they didn't fit with Napier's culture, whatever that means. Hopefully this causes a rift that damages the program just in time for our 2026-27 home-and-home series.

Lightyear (7/19 WNB).

Pixar films come with impossibly high benchmarks, typically with great story arcs, emotional conflicts, witty dialogue, unique points-of-view. The story is convoluted to the point where you don't quite see how the protagonists are going to resolve their conflict as they're winging it the whole time. The pacing is unrelenting, which ironically makes it feel longer because there is no time to feel anything except watch explosions and people running. And the peck on the lips that a character's two moms' share as they celebrate their daughter's birthday is an incidental part of the story was a nothing-burger. I mean, it would be a very good Sunday morning cartoon, but it is one of Pixar's two worst films.

O.Overall's avatar

What is the other bad one in your opinion?

GoldenSD81's avatar

Probably one of the 3 Cars movies.

While not a bad film, I felt Brave was a bit underwhelming.

sycasey's avatar

Cars 2 probably the weakest.

The Good Dinosaur isn't very good either. I'd have that below Lightyear.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I really liked The Good Dinosaur but I also felt a bet underwhelmed by it when I first watched it. It is basically a Pixar cover of The Lion King.

instant pot, toaster oven, etc ..

i am still not convinced that these multipurpose devices are overall better at any one thing. i think they just give the convenience of doing multiples things reasonably well.

e.g. i would have just have a rice cooker to make rice and a nice toaster for making toast.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I love my Tatung rice cooker. can steam and cook rice.

Scootie's avatar

I am #teamtoaster. I like good toast, which toaster ovens are useless at, and I have an actual oven for the other shit.

heyalumnigo's avatar

All the newer toaster ovens are larger, able to handle 6 pieces of toast. It now takes toast much longer. The problem with toasters is that they don't work as well for batard shaped bread like my sourdough.

[Poll] DeSantis pulls ahead of Trump in New Hampshire, tied with Biden.

https://scholars.unh.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1696&context=survey_center_polls

GoldenSD81's avatar

Here is the thing about a DeSantis v Trump. If DeSantis wins the GQP nomination but doesn’t pull a large primary victory does trump go full scorched earth and still run to spoil DeSantis chances, while also claiming that the GQP primary elections were full of fraud and stolen from him.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I agree. I really hope it gets ugly and they go full scorched earth on each other.

sycasey's avatar

There's a good argument that Trump managed to win the nomination in 2016 in part because the GOP opposition was splintered and never coalesced around anyone else. If DeSantis is the clear #1 challenger that's a very different fight.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

That's exactly what happened. While most media and "experts" were debating Cruz/Rubio/Jeb/Christie, Trump was not taken seriously by anyone until it was too late. His bullying debate and media appearances did not hurt him, as he warped everything to make it all about him.

Trump is singularly rotten. But he is also the representation a subset of the nation who think they're the victims to something/anything, and they want a return to some idyllic previous state of affairs. The 'Again' in MAGA is genius marketing, so much more effective to tap into that collective want of revenge.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah and I agree with the 2016 assessment.

If DeSantis manages to beat trump but not decisively, I could see and hope Trump just runs as a 3rd party candidate.

Dodgers hit parade smooths things over to beat Reds

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/6/21/23177520/dodgers-hit-parade-reds-recap

The opener of Dodgers-Reds in Cincinnati was a battle between process and results for Los Angeles. Though it didn’t seem that way at times early in the game, the Dodgers ended up pleased with both in an 8-2 win at Great American Ball Park.

The Dodgers tattooed the ball all night against Reds starter Tyler Mahle, with 10 hard-hit balls, including nine with an exit velocity of 100 mph or higher. They had four doubles and a home run off Mahle, but managed only four runs in six innings against him.

Only one hit in six at-bats with runners in scoring position brought a return of recent woes for the offense, but it wasn’t all that bad. After all, four runs in six innings is a 6.00 ERA, which is obviously very bad for a pitcher. A familiar feeling lingered the Dodgers somehow should have scored more.
