Those iridescent spots you see on roast beef? It's not spoilage. It's caused by very sharp slicers.

University of Miami Hurricanes play at Hard Rock Stadium which is about 24 miles from campus.

Expand full comment
author

Correct. This is the second furthest. And it's downtown Miami, so we're talking 45 minutes travel.

Expand full comment

Wow. Talk about a disincentive for students to travel to home games. This is why stadiums should be on campus, if they reasonably can be.

Miami used to play at the Orange Bowl, which is still 13.2 miles away from the University. TIL: The Orange Bowl was demolished and the current home of the Miami Marlins was constructed there.

Interesting. I didn't realize that the Marlins stadium is on the site where the Orange Bowl stood. But it does make sense from a land use perspective.

Whitehouse (D-RI) and Wyden (D-OR) sent a letter to AG Garland to appoint a special investigator into why Clarence Thomas accepted a Harlan Crow-funded trip to Russia and a yacht trip around the Baltics. Sears revival, Butler breakout continue against Boston

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/7/10/24196181/oakland-athletics-boston-red-sox-jp-sears-lawrence-butler-mason-miller

The Oakland Athletics continue to look like a different beast in July.

Following a seven-run outburst in the latter half of yesterday’s 12-9 loss, the A’s lineup carried that momentum into today’s victory, evening up their series against the 50-40 Boston Red Sox.

I’m not the most superstitious person in the world, but as Michael Scott would say, I’m a little-stitious.

Everyone baseball fan should be.

The sit-in-the-same-seat during the postseason, no-wash skivvies during a winning streak can be a little extreme, though feeding the illusion of participation is an important part of the communal experience. As bizarre as it comes off, it’s really an act of wise humility. Small quirks, our little game-day rituals, show deference to the inter-connectedness of things.

Dodgers’ late game comeback ends in controversy in loss to Phillies

The Dodgers matched against the Philadelphia Phillies for the second of a three game series, where the base running mishaps of Miguel Rojas erased a Dodger comeback attempt in a 4-3 loss.

Young right hander Gavin Stone looked to turn things around after a shortened outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks. His counterpart, Cristopher Sanchez, entered Wednesdays’ contest with the fourth best ERA in the National League (third in his own rotation).

So I see we're playing UCLA in a home and home and home and home. My question is this: if you play someone at their stadium and yours and it's called a home and home, what do you call it if you play both games at home? Also, what do you call it if you play both games of a series away? In other words, shouldn't what we call a home and home be a home and away or an away and home? (To answer your question: yes, I'm going to continue to go on and on about this topic for the rest of my days just as I'll continue to insist that the word" the" should proceed Big Game as in The Big Game. I gotta be me.)

Jul 11·edited Jul 11

I will concede that home-and-away is correct from the perspective of one team in the pairing. Home-and-home is also correct when referring to both teams as an impartial observer.

Expand full comment

What's best is if, for example you're Cal and you've scheduled a game at Michigan in 2026 and a home game with them in 2027 refer to it as an away and home series. If the home teams are reversed you call it a home and away. Gives you more information (who plays where) and is also not at all confusing.

Perhaps “home, meaning California, for both teams traveling less than 350 miles versus 1500+ miles
