I'll take part of the blame (the rest lies with Substack's platform). Typically I manually push it to the front page, but I've had a weird work schedule recently (West Coast work trip, working partial days) so pushing it to the front hasn't been part of my morning routine.
Commissioner Buchanan is busy trying to negotiate a better deal for DBD with the W4C execs, we should have a great deal in the next two weeks that will elevate DBD to the same status as Reddit.
This reminds me that I wanted to give a shout out here today to you for the hilarious comment on yesterday's story about the Colorado Dejons leaving the Pac for the Big 12. For those of you who missed it:
"Decades of incompetent leadership at the Pac10/12.
It started with Hansen, continued with Scott and now we have the equivalent of James Buchanan as the commissioner of the Pac12."
Not yet. I worry that when he comes aboard there'll be talk of secession in the conference and the battle to keep the conference together will result in many casualties.
i have not come across that one neighbor that i am BFF's with and just can show up anytime or trust completely.
on the other hand, we have a very good relationship with the neighbor/person that we bought our first house from. they only moved 3 doors away and when they wanted to pass the baton on hosting the block party, we became the designated hosts for a few years.
we have since moved away, but remain very good friends and have nice memories of both having lived in the same house for about 10 yrs each.
I will say something you might not believe, but is very much true - a lot of my tenants in work/live buildings have said that one thing that they loved ago living in the building was how many friends they had.
I had a lot of friends too, but listing me is sort of a no-brainer, but still changes how I feel about people.
I'm going to go with the super-evangelical neighbors that have the good sense to keep their opinions to themselves over the guy who lets his yard grow into a weed pit.
all this talk of tacos is making me hungry. we are going to Taqueria Habanero in College Park MD for dinner tonight. i am sure it wont be great, but hopefully there is cold beer and tequila.
generally, a wandering soreness, due to having started exercise classes a few weeks ago, and hooping again. Then a couple of days ago a car did a sudden right turn into the Market St Safeway parking lot right in front of me. Managed to brake sufficiently to not hit them, but did end up lying in the road. So soreness on my left side from the various impacts there. luckily didn't hit my head (so didn't test out the efficacy of the helmet I was wearing)
Great. I've got a series of bike races starting next week, so I've been doing more and more riding in midday heat to acclimate to the inferno that can be MD in August.
I don't envy any college athletes who travel from the West Coast to the South and try to compete in swampy weather on one day of acclimation.
A series of cross country mountain bike races in one of the local state parks. A nonprofit I volunteer with hosted the event last year and it was successful enough that we're doing it again. It's a relatively small-scale event (registration is limited to 200), which is a nice contrast to the bigger local events we support: Charm City Cross and Bel Air Cyclocross Festival.
A bit nervous. Have a backhoe excavator at the house digging up the corner of the slab foundation. Broken pipe needs to be fixed that the neighbors discovered when water started emerging from the ground and running under their deck.
Health generally good. But I strained my ham/glute on the right side so have been off running for a week. I don't notice it at all when walking so have been doing some long walks. It feels like I can do a short jog tomorrow.
I don’t feel good but supposedly my health is mostly fine according to my doctors. Outside of needing to exercise more and lose some weight I appear to be fine but I honestly don’t feel fine.
Walking around is fine. Still a little stiff to start. PA said I can start light jogging so the PT started a couple of small drills. side by side through the ladder and also quickly going down the ladder on my tippy toes. But mainly strengthing my calf muscles so I an do a heel lift on only the right foot.
overall good but i have lots of little aches and pains mostly on the right side, sore achilles, sore rib, sore knee, etc.
and then to make matters worse, this last weekend i fell into a river and landed awkwardly on my butt/back. still a bit sore from that even though nothing bad happened.
Physically, really good. I'm strong and fit. Mentally, I've never had a traditional midlife crisis, but more mellowed into a weird middle ground coming to grips with my eventual mortality. There will be things I won't see, experience, or know. I can see the end of my career arc and it will end with a whimper. And it is perversely satisfying to know that even though I will miss out on a lot, it feels good to be grateful for what I have and once had. Once I let go, it has given me some peace of mind. My wife has not and it is digging painfully into her soul.
Mo Brooks expresses surprise that Jack Smith hasn't asked for his testimony. Either he is colossally stupid because he doesn't realize that he's a potential defendant for charges from Jack Smith since he was at the center of the whole 1/6 storm or he's fishing for a plea deal.

Michigan state law prohibits the disclosure of grand juries or indictments, but one woman confirmed that she has been indicted related to Michigan voting machine tampering. On my walk this morning I saw one guy wearing a Cameron Crazies t-shirt and another with a Caplipari Nation t-shirt. Both were walking in Georgetown and I guess the hoops team at the university has been so down lately they felt like they wouldn't get harassed for wearing those.

I cannot see UW and Oregon sticking around under current conditions. They will look for an invite from the B1G or the Big XII, take it, and run far away from the dysfunctional Pac-12 conference leadership.
Possible scenario - B1G decides they need West Coast anchors for USC and UCLA and invite UW, Oregon, Cal, and Stanf*rd. At the very least, it appears that UW and Oregon are likely to get invitations. It's not apparent to me that Cal and Stanf*rd will get the same consideration even if the Bay Area media market is not far behind LA in terms of eyeballs.
The expansion of the CFP and a guaranteed berth is a reason Oregon and Washington don't bolt. That access and the associated $s and exposure matters to them, whereas that is not much of a consideration for Colorado (same access in the Big XII with better exposure and media $s), or Stanford and California, who retain a minority share in CFP money in the PAC.
I cannot see how Cal athletics survives if we are forced to drop down to a mid major conference.
If we drop to the MWC we would need to drop a lot of sports. Fan apathy for football would crater even further. Wilcox still would have a losing conference record.
I agree, but I also would point out that there doesn't seem to be any great movement on Cal's part to wangle a B1G invite. A Big XII invite would be a consolation, and it would probably stave off having to cut sports, but it is clearly a step down from the B1G.
I get that the market counts, but the point is that neither Cal nor Stanf*rd really have much influence in their own market, unlike USC and UCLA. Football in the Bay Area is dominated by the 49ers and to an obviously smaller extent, the Raiders. The NFL holds sway over the Bay Area market in ways that Cal and Stanf*rd haven't since the 1950s. Because of that, I think it gives pause to any Power conference that would invite Cal and/or Stanf*rd.
The factor in Cal's and Stanf*rd's favor w/r/t the B1G is that they would help anchor USC's and UCLA's schedule by providing West Coast opponents, same as UW and UO (Oregon). Without that help in the travel schedule for USC and UCLA, I think that B1G membership carries an difficult travel requirement for the LA schools.
The Bay Area is also an attractive travel destination for fans of B1G schools; how much of an attraction remains to be seen. And I'm not certain if the B1G will have a 8-game or 9-game conference schedule beginning in 2024. The number of games impacts how many B1G teams would visit and what the rotation would be.
Leave my feelings out of it. I don't think I care very much either way. I started to step back after 2015. It was apparent to me that I cared too much given how little campus administration does care.

Hogan Harris was initially listed as the game’s starter but the A’s made a last-minute call for fellow freshman Freddy Tarnok to start his first career game and for Harris to follow him in a righty-lefty tandem. By the end of their outings, the rookie duo was exposed for making a few too many mistakes.
After a physically and emotionally draining win on Tuesday night, the Dodgers came out a little flat on Wednesday, losing big to the Blue Jays, 8-1, and dropping their first series since before the All-Star break.
Yusei Kikuchi out-dueled Tony Gonsolin, and the Jays added three insurance runs off the Dodgers’ bullpen, to thoroughly shut the door on any potential late rallies.
I don't think he'll go to the East Coast. Don't see him as a Yankee. So I think it's down to Mariners, if they're interested, Dodgers, Giants. Don't see the Padres trying to throw that much money at him when they can't even win with their hired guns. So my guess is in the end, it will be Dodgers Giants, and I guess Mariners if they are interested. Don't the Ms have huge contracts other than Julio?
Not a very pleasant game to watch. The US was trying too hard to draw fouls in the first half and players were getting upset and frustrated when they weren't getting favorable calls
In fairness, the Dutch players were fouling the shit out of the US players and the ref was ignoring it - so I'm not surprised the US players were trying to draw attention to it in the first half. The Dutch plainly thought that playing tight passing game and fouling the US players to stop them from getting into space would work, and it nearly did. Mind you, given the way the US responded in the first half, plainly he was on to something.
Saw the last three Larry O'Brien's a few years ago at an LGBT night game (where they brought the trophies over to where we were). The last Oracle (Arena) season, iirc.
And at Oracle (Park), they have the three 201x trophies in the concourse (I'm assuming that they are the real ones, and not just replicas).
Saw the Stanley Cup at the HOF in Toronto. Saw the Stanley Cup and Commissioner's Trophy from not too far a distance when the Caps and Nats won their championships.

Looks like I have a work trip to SD M-W. Fish tacos FTW!
Do you have a go-to fish taco place in SD?
Mine is Blue Water Seafood. Ended up there on a whim as I was craving it and saw it off the highway. It was the bomb.
I've done Blue Water off I-5 many times. Also like Oscars by Pacific Beach. The Taco Stand in La Jolla was suggested and was really good.
I'll only have 2 dinner probably this time so I'll probably do Blue Water and Oscars.
Oscars is the best.
If you’re in the Chula Vista/Eastlake area I recommend TJ Oyster Bar.

CU bolts for the Big 12
https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/report-colorado-is-gone-to-the-big
The deal is done.
https://twitter.com/CUBuffs/status/1684675365728628736?t=gJKxArsCW3xNh7xf4qbmig&s=19
This is about survival pure and simple bc athletically CU brings nothing to the table. The PAC is a dead man walking. Colorado will go on as a full member wrt to TV money payouts. We are down to 9 teams. The NCAA will not recognize any conference with less than 8 teams. We are on the verge of collapse if Utah, or the Arizona schools bolt. I do not blame Colorado for ensuring their continued existence.
PAC 9
Add SD St to get to 10, and Fresno St and choose Boise St or Colorado St (smaller slice of the Denver market) to be back to 12 for inventory purposes. Avoids the logistical nightmares to adding SMU, which won't actually deliver much of the Dallas/Ft Worth market, or do that much for Texas recruiting.
I used to think this same way but we might as well dream big. Absorb the entire MWC to create the PMWC and we can monopolize all football played in the west and the west coast.
That would be remarkably forward thinking for the Pac. I've seen nothing to suggest they have an appetite, or the competence, for that.
Nothing.
The P12 leadership is completely inept.
Try to strangle out ucla and usc by having neutral site games at SoFi thay kick off at the same time as usc/ucla. Don’t allow any PMWC teams to schedule ucla or usc in any sport.
Take a smaller money deal for say 4 years to prove the concept and then renegotiate a larger contract with CBS and streamers.
Likely to be transitory. Either the Pac-12 morphs into a mid-major conference or it simply ceases to exist.
I cannot see how Cal athletics survives if we are forced to drop down to a mid major conference.

I agree, but I also would point out that there doesn't seem to be any great movement on Cal's part to wangle a B1G invite. A Big XII invite would be a consolation, and it would probably stave off having to cut sports, but it is clearly a step down from the B1G.
The B1G isn't interested in inviting Cal, so what Cal does in that regard going forward isn't anything they should invest resources in.
We need a really competent AD who would get things done and we might end up in B1G.
Eh, the market REALLY counts - may hurt your (our) feelings if that's why we are chosen, but it makes sense.
Have had my pic taken with the Giants' World Series trophies.
