Welp, there it is. Ms. Griner is now a pawn in US-Russia relations.

I wonder if she'll be used to get the arms dealer out of US prison.

DBD Happy Hour ...

i am staying in Berkeley for a few days. anyone around and up for meeting up on Thu (today) or Fri?

g.oso's avatar

Friday would work better for me honestly

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I'm supposed to meet a coworker for drinks tomorrow after work, but I can get together after that if you all meet up! I'll be in downtown Berkeley.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

what time is good for the 2nd round of drinks?

i am happy to go anywhere but i sort of like the drinks at east bay spice company. but maybe crowded on Fri night? or maybe not since students are not around ...

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Ooh I haven't been there and would love to check them out. Would 7 be too late?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

good for me ... 700p it is!

they have tasty Indian snacks there as well.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think No 2 and 3 will be with me but I'm guessing they won't want to come. I'll try to get there as close to 7 as I can.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

tell them they get to hang out w/ ME!!!

or drop them off at Yogurt Park or something ...

oddly enough the first thing that comes to mind is "Ferry Across the Msersey" by Gerry and the Pacemakers, which is a bit niche I suppose.

When I was but a lad, we used to take the Calais - Dover ferry for trips back to the motherland from the Netherlands, with an occasional overnight from Hook of Holland to Hull.

I'd like to do some slow traveling in western Europe involving ferries, like Stockholm - Helsinki or Ancona - Patras as part of a long train itinerary.

Cugel's avatar

Alright, if you're going to be like that, the only ferries I've taken a lot have been in the US & Canada in the various Seas, Straits & Bays between islands near Seattle & Vancouver - 'tis a beautiful area.

Cal player on EA NCAA Football cover

SGBear's avatar

Jack Plummer.

If he can prove that his last two seasons with Purdue weren't a fluke, I would be so happy. If he's throwing all touchdowns, no interceptions, and completing 70% of his passes - he could push Cal to second place in the Pac-12 North if not win it outright and go to a decent bowl.

I don't think that will happen since he is learning a new system, has new receiver teammates, and will be protected by our unproven oline. But if the moons align, he would be on the cover.

Peetyjay's avatar

Brett Johnson. If he can return to form, he will the the tip of the spear for this defense much the way Evan Weaver was.

O.Overall's avatar

Maybe Daniel Scott. Feel like it has to be a defensive player given that is the strength of the team

sycasey's avatar

You'll never see a Colquitt back away!

FiatSlug's avatar

Never gets old. Never.

DeSean eludes at least 3 tackles, and there were at least 3 critical blocks by Cal teammates. Beautiful. Just beautiful.

Justbear's avatar

I can't remember when was our last punt return TD. Did Remigio have any? If not, Keenan Allen?

Cugel's avatar

Didn't we have a game with 2? Against Wash State maybe?

Justbear's avatar

Wasn't that Trevor Davis with two kickoff returns?

This has 495,000 views. 490,000 might be from me. That was a fun time to be a Cal fan.

CruzinBears's avatar

One of the most satisfying Cal games to attend, esp after attending the away portion of the series the year prior.

Justbear's avatar

This is probably his last year in NFL if he can sign with a team. He still has speed. Just need to stay healthy and a good deep ball QB. How about Denver?

Jury awards plaintiffs $4.11m in the compensatory phase of damages. The punitive damages have yet to be awarded and those are expected to be much, much larger considering how poorly the case went for Jones.

A seminal moment in my life was being at a People's Park demonstration in 1969 and looking up to see a helicopter flying over Sproul spraying tear gas. Also seeing cops gratuitously beating demonstrators was impactful.

goldenone's avatar

I have mixed feelings on PP development. The university needs to build more housing because of expanding enrollment. When I was a freshman I ended up at Clark Kerr only because a couple of folks ahead of me in the lottery bowed out. At the same time the free speech movement should receive a monument or placard within the grounds. Maybe some kind of combination of old and new?

FiatSlug's avatar

I find it ridiculous that those who "defend" the park see the continued non-development as the monument to free speech.

Why is it necessary to keep an unsafe set of conditions as a monument to free speech?

goldenone's avatar

I absolutely think it should be developed as it has been an eyesore since I even was at Cal in the Snyder years. Some kind of salute to free speech would be in order but not a perpetual wasteland of drug use and other unsavory activities.

O.Overall's avatar

Building housing is so badly needed, the idea that there is some public good by leaving it as a park for drug addicts is kind of ridiculous IMO. Maybe you put up a plaque, that is about it

one of my friends from SC is trying to whip up some enthusiasm for homecoming this year as it's purportedly our 30th reunion - I have to admit my enthusiasm is waning for traveling to LA to watch our semi-pro team when I can just wait a couple of years and have a short drive to see games against our traditional rivals Maryland and Rutgers.

Bless you, sir. Bless you.

DC Trojan's avatar

Honestly, all I really wanted out of the university administration was to keep working on worthy programs for undergrads, and instead we got rapist doctor, meth head med school dean, campaign contribution laundering, another on-staff rapist, and a degree mill for social work so bad that even the administrators complained. Add in the cash grab move to the Big 10 that could kill off multiple other schools' athletic programs, and my enthusiasm could be described as "constrained." If we're formalizing the transition to "hedge fund and sports franchises with a sideline in granting credentials," I'll watch the football team when they're on tv and I feel like it just like any of my other pro sport interests, and we can be done there.

Peetyjay's avatar

I suppose the unspoken part is that in losing the traditions, the rivalries, and the alumni who will be turned off and tune out due to these losses, re-alignment and expanded CFB will inevitably create a larger market of fans to non alumni. I am sure that the administration as USC has given these trade-offs consideration and in some ways, is really making a decision to devalue the very base of fans and supporter that has sustained these programs for the new fan who will just follow whatever CFB program has the most cache and marketing appeal.

Giants lose to the Dodgers, 3-0.

Again, Evan Philips cause the Giants to have a NOBLETIGER.

heyalumnigo's avatar

When in trouble, Dodgers call on Evan Phillips

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/8/3/23291578/evan-phillips-dodgers-giants-julio-urias

Miguel Vargas drove in a run with his first major league at-bat, and Julio Urías tossed six innings of scoreless ball, but the man of the night was none other than Evan Phillips. The Dodgers reliever continues to prove his worth by pitching with ice on his veins in the most stressful of situations.

Urías secured his 11th win of the season in this 3-0 win over the Giants, but he probably owes Phillips at least a top-of-the-line dinner following the ways things ended for Urías in the seventh inning.

The Dodgers pitching staff lost Walker Buehler a couple of months ago, and nothing about their season would hint towards having both the best record in the big leagues, and one of the best starting rotations since their ace went down.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Another Dodgers player with a MLB debut last night, Miguel Vargas. First AB, ground rule double in triples alley that would've been out in over half of the MLB ballparks. Started 2-2 with 2 RBIs.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I noticed this at the game. It was pretty amazing.

dcblue's avatar

I usually like to go for a walk or do an errand or two in the late afternoon to get out of the house. But the current heat index is 104 and the Giants-Dodgers are on the mlb network. I think I'll watch some ball today.

Bay Area Dog Sitting

Hey folks...I'm gonna try and head up for the Davis game - my usual dog sitter is out of town, though...

Does anyone in DBD land know of a good pet sitter that can watch the pups in their own (sitters) home? Totally prepared to do the Rover route, but figured I'd throw it out there to my peeps.

Thank you!

Story checks out: my mom's sending links about the pineapple cakes given to Pelosi in Taiwan

Cugel's avatar

No military action in the Taiwan Strait, as they felt they had been led to expect. No shoot-down, no missile attack, no fighter jet flying next to Ms. Pelosi’s plane. Just some denunciations and announcements of military exercises.

Many people complained that they felt let down and lied to by the government. “Don’t put on a show of power if you don’t have the power,” wrote a Weibo user with the handle @shanshanmeiyoulaichi2hao shortly after the flight’s landing. “What a loss of face!”

The user went on to say that the government didn’t deserve the people who had waited for hours to witness how history could be made. “A great nation. How ironic!”
