I'll leave this bit of irony here for you all to enjoy.

Worked at a chiropractor's office for two years in college. My primary job was loosen up patients before their adjustments on a traction table. While there are many quacks out there in the chiro business there are a handful of very good ones who genuinely care about their patients and help them recover from injuries. I no longer get adjustments because I haven't found a good one in LA, but Dr. Schmidt at Action Chiropractic in Santa Cruz is one of the good ones.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

So a chiropractic fluffer? Good onya!!!!

CruzinBears's avatar

Basically even used a "thumper", basically a two-handed back massager

GoldenSD81's avatar

So you were a thumper and not a fluffer.

I've moved from mir poix to sofrito as a base aromatic. Kenji Lopez-Alt's advice of "if it doesn't take 40 minutes to make, you're doing it wrong" made the world of difference.

2 takeaways from this:

1. This escalated quickly.

2. Meth is a hell of a drug.

SGBear's avatar

Also "we applied the handcuffs correctly" seems disingenuous.

SGBear's avatar

What did you want to be when you grew up?

GoldenSD81's avatar

Growing up in San Diego meant a lot of school field trips to The World Famous San Diego Zoo, so I wanted to be a zoologist.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

it would have been a better story if you wanted to be a giant panda.

GoldenSD81's avatar

If I’m going to be a panda, I’m going to be the Red Panda.

dcblue's avatar

I really enjoy the red pandas at the National Zoo. Only problem is that they are inside most of the time so don't get to see them often.

Paleontologist. Dinosaurs, baby.

Astronomer.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i didnt necessarily want to be an astronaut, but i wanted to design spaceships.

A baseball umpire. I firmly believed that umpires got paid in beer based on a Budweiser commercial I saw as a child.

GoldenSD81's avatar

And they have a beer gut.

Tangtpt's avatar

At least I accomplished that part.

When in grade school, a lifeguard. Later on, a coroner (I was a big Quincy fan).

ok, you just carbon-dated yourself! ;-)

my takeaway from qunicy was wanting to change my name to that. (altho maybe there was a Sesame Street quincy...and the jack klugman character just piqued my interest because of the name.)

I did like the intern who fainted at "welcome to the world of forensics"

HeyAlumniGo still wants to be a pilot i think

heyalumnigo's avatar

I would LOVE to be a pilot. My kids got me a 1 hour introductory pilot flight for father's day. It's for the place at the San Carlos airport so I'll probably try and do it this fall. Unfortunately they don't offer the lessons on weekends so I'll have to find time during the week.

Peetyjay's avatar

Same here, then was told being colorblind was an obstacle.

Cugel's avatar

If you want to be a pilot in the Air Force, you need at least 20/20 vision.

heyalumnigo's avatar

That was one issue I didn't try to be a fighter jock. Also because I'm easily susceptible to motion sickness so that's the main reason.

PawlOski's avatar

My dad was fighter pilot and flight instructor in the Marines for 20 years. I never had the slightest desire to join the military, nor the kind of scratch to ever consider private flight school.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

this is a funny story about our kids around 5 and 8 yrs old ..

older one asks younger one .. "what do you want to be when you grow up?"

younger one said .. "a mommy"

older one (who wants to conquer the world) says "you cant just be a mommy. you can be a mommy AND something else. you have to pick something else too."

she continues .. "look at mom, she is a mommy AND has a job (at Pfizer)"

as of now .. younger one is undecided, but it is more than "just mommy".

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

one of my good friends (and former bosses) told me that i had no goals. that i was like a jellyfish that just floated around in the seas going wherever the tide pushed me and that i had a remarkable ability to float above the garbage!

She Hulk: Attorney at Law - super fun! finally something that doesn't have to mean anything - just a half hour comedy.

Cugel's avatar

Watching "Under the Banner of Heaven" which I think is truly great, but I find super creepy (episode 4 last night) weird conversation with my wife, because she doesn't find it so creepy and said the first series of "True Detective" was more creepy. To me was creepy is the world they are living in, not just the killer. "True Detective" was in a normal world.

Also watching "Never Have I Ever" which is both fun and good, but I found episode 2 a bit too PC in an illogical way, which my wife just disagreed with - enjoy the show, but they should make things fake (watched 3rd episode last night).

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Even tho it is Fundamentalist, it’s nonetheless an awful look for the LDS Church…which is completely unfair.

GoldenSD81's avatar

It is impossible to be unfair to LDS.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The Black Phone (streamed on Peacock)….set in late-70’s N. Denver, it’s a horror/thriller/fantasy starring Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Davies (Upham from Saving Private Ryan) and James Ransone (Inside Man, Ziggy Sobotka - S2 The Wire). A titch disturbing, especially for parents of children out there in DBD-land, but all in all, not a bad little thriller. It also features an all-time great movie character played by young actor Madeleine McGraw, the precocious younger sister of the lead…she was great!

GoldenSD81's avatar

I want to watch this and it looks good. I do have a 4 and 2 year old, so you’re saying I should watch it with them?!?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

See it on a day when they’re both being total pills…or wait until they’re 30.

Trump suspects that the narc was a family member because the FBI knew which leather case to look for. It's funny that he doesn't know who it is because either a) a lot of his family probably hate him and b) he probably knows he goes announces exactly where he kept the nuclear secrets he wanted to sell to the Saudis

[NY Daily News] ex-CFO of Trump Org Allen Weisselberg is expected to testify against Trump Organization - but not anybody named Trump - as part of his plea-deal. I'd take this with a pinch of salt until confirmed, but it is interesting.

Gabe Kapler is out managed again, this time by Torrey Lovullo, as the Giants blow a 2-1 lead in the 8th and lose 3-2, courtesy of the eminently hittable Dominic Leone and his 4.50 ERA. This 2022 Giants team is an homage to bad baseball under the guise of “analytics,” from the top down, as pinch runner Mike Yastrzemski is picked off 2nd with 1-out in the B7.

AndyPanda's avatar

The plight of being a Giants fan. Perhaps they should again try having the Guardians play for them.

The night before, when they won in the walk off, I was actually able to watch (MLB didn't actually block a meaningful game!), when I tuned in I was initially confused when I saw a team wearing what appeared to be Guardians uniforms, not SF Giant uniforms. Upon a closer camera shot, it appeared that Nike must have sent the wrong uniforms, and someone took an orange sharpie and hand drew an image of a bridge arch on the sleeve. But what appeared to be another team, after doing essentially nothing but pitch and play defense for 8 2/3 innings (glad they did that!) suddenly got 2 good at bats in a row, and won.

All this continues to reaffirm for me that very few involved with baseball knows what they are doing.

Cugel's avatar

A's win again! Beat the Rangers 7-2.

FiatSlug's avatar

That's the best news I've heard all day. Maybe all month. In 2023 I can resume listening to Cal football on the radio.

SGBear's avatar

ELSEWHERE IN COLLEGE

heyalumnigo's avatar

Multiple sources told ESPN that the board of managers briefly discussed the possibility of restructuring how college football is governed, with the idea presented of major college football potentially being governed outside of the NCAA. The most logical place for the sport to be run outside of the NCAA would be under the auspices of the CFP, which was discussed on the call. The CFP currently oversees the sport's postseason playoff and has contractual ties to other marquee postseason bowl games.

SGBear's avatar

That is a terrible idea. If this goes through, Mark Emmert will have completely destroyed college football for everyone except for the 4-6 teams that vie for National Championship every year. He policies seem like a libertarian's wet dream.

DC Trojan's avatar

I think the damage is already done tbh

paulie's avatar

I honestly have lost my passion for college football beyond Cal. Like, who give a damn when there’s no competitive balance yet these conferences scoop up more teams just to milk them dry. Also, the NFL has really improved the football product over the past few years so college ball doesn’t even have that now.

AndyPanda's avatar

Emmert doesn't act in a vacuum, he does what his bosses (the institutions in the NCAA) tell him to do. The NCAA membership's lack of foresight and coordination caused this.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

As usual, the SEC and Big Ten are driving this train. They stand to benefit the most from expanded playoffs.

heyalumnigo's avatar

@SHOCKING@ It's always been about the money.

---------------------

A source told ESPN that the general feel among the presidents and chancellors on the call was that the college sports leaders have left too much money on the table by not implementing a new playoff before 2026, perhaps as much as a half-billion dollars.

Justbear's avatar

I used to care about college playoffs and AP preseason polls. I have lost any interest in them and don't care at all.

SNL skit from the 2000's that I remember. Pretty funny.

DC Trojan's avatar

The surprise to me about that report re: revenues was that all the SC honks on twitter actually were more or less right about the value of what SC gave up for equal revenue sharing under Larry Scott.

Tangtpt's avatar

Doesn't seem like the Regents can do anything about it...not even making fUCLA stop using Cal's fight song.

What will ESPN do, left out in the cold, decide to do??? Pony up for the Pac-12 rights?

PawlOski's avatar

Yes, but they are only competing against themselves now. It will be a small pony.

AndyPanda's avatar

CBS Sports Network could still try to bolster their offerings by complimenting their coverage of the Mt West...would still provide better distribution than the Pac-12 Network has.

goldenone's avatar

Essentially they are the only game in town. And without competition the valuations tend to stagnate or decline. A hope is that the streaming providers - Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon will provide a counterbalance.

PawlOski's avatar

Kliavkoff is between a rock and hard place. ESPN is only bidding against itself and UO, UW, Cal and Stanford are getting antsy. Whatever deal we get, the conference will continue to be a house of cards just waiting to be tipped.
