Finished A League of Their Own (Amazon Prime). Maybe it is knowing more what to expect but also because they finally got to more baseball, I enjoyed the second half of first season a lot more.

By the way, one of the best AAGPBL exhibit is supposedly in South Bend, Indiana at the local museum for anyone who might be making the trip to Notre Dame (I still got to figure that out). South Bend Blue Sox is the other team that lasted for the duration of the AAGPBL along side the Rockford Peaches.

I've seen a couple interviews recently with Maybelle Blair and saw she threw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium the other day. She's 95 and played for Peoria back in 1948. She is really smart about baseball and has a quick wit. And she came out as gay at an event

promoting the show earlier this year.

I'm encouraged by the decent reviews so far, but I think I'll wait a few more episodes before I decide if I'll watch. I guess I'm still bitter about how GoT ended

Expand full comment
author

It was kind of promising but the entire first episode took place in one city. I don't know (though the info is probably already online) if that's going to be the case for the entire series since having too many plot-lines were kind of both the draw and the downfall of GoT.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I know that GoT seasons also tended to start slowly before ramping up, but then you look back to the first episode of GoT:

1. White Walkers

2. King's Hand dies, must be replaced

3. Questions about who killed him

4. Stark-Lannister marriage proposed

5. Targaryens overseas, plotting an invasion

6. Incest!

7. Guy pushes a kid out a window!

That's a lot of intrigue. HotD doesn't have nearly that much going on. But this is also a show that can afford to assume people are interested, rather than trying to grab their interest.

In Japan, airports have nice restaurants before the security. At Narita and Haneda, there are many restaurants where you can eat with friends and family before going thru the security. All regional airports have a restaurant(s) before security and none after security. It is nice because the security is fast but I want more stuff inside.

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno exploring possible sale of team

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34447735/los-angeles-angels-owner-arte-moreno-exploring-possible-sale-team

Arte Moreno is exploring the possibility of selling the Los Angeles Angels after two decades of ownership, it was announced Tuesday.

The Angels said they have "initiated a formal process to evaluate strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the team," and have retained Galatioto Sports Partners as financial advisors in the process.

"Although this difficult decision was entirely our choice and deserved a great deal of thoughtful consideration, my family and I have ultimately come to the conclusion that now is the time," Moreno said in a statement. "Throughout this process, we will continue to run the franchise in the best interest of our fans, employees, players and business partners."

Dodgers fall flat against Eric Lauer in Brewers opener

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/8/22/23317620/dodgers-no-offense-eric-lauer-nemesis-brewers

Monday saw yet another pitching-heavy game between the Dodgers and Brewers at Dodger Stadium, and the road team scored all the runs in the opener, which gave Milwaukee its third win over Los Angeles in seven days, a 4-0 victory.

For the second time in six days, the Dodgers had trouble against Eric Lauer, but it’s not like this is anything new. He did not permit the Dodgers a run on Monday, the ninth time in eleven career starts against them he allowed two or fewer runs. That’s the recipe for a 2.37 ERA against Los Angeles, and now a 7-1 record.

Last Wednesday in Milwaukee was a rarity in that the Dodgers actually beat Lauer, even though he only allowed two solo home runs in seven innings. If there was a silver lining on Monday, it’s that Lauer needed 98 pitches to get through five innings, scattering five singles and two walks.

It was fun beating up teams like UW in low-scoring rockfights in the first few years of the Wilcox Era, but I'm getting tired of watching a top-3 (in conference) defense get held back by an offense that ranges from mediocre to unwatchable. My modest level of excitement reflects my lack of optimism that the offense will accomplish anything more than a couple long scoring drives while sputtering aimlessly for the rest of the game.

Expand full comment

The lack of big plays, spotty special teams and a consistent parade of 3 & outs are maddening...the Bears leave a lot of W's on the field.

Not bowling last year with a solid D and an offense chock full of veteran starters is serious cause for concern...it gets coaches fired, not extended. Sigh.

Expand full comment

The COVID years did a lot to dampen excitement around the program. We'll see if that's fixable with a more "normal" season.

I agree. It seems like promise of the team has faded since COVID started. Need to get the mojo back also field a functional offense.
