Going on a drive with Breakfast Club Rally. They have a drive once a month with different themes. Sometimes it's a country, or air-cooled cars, etc. This month it's Tokyo Calling 4, which is pre-99 Japanese cars. They do let in some special cars post 99, like a Skyline R34.

Went to Cal women's soccer match yesterday (they drew with Gonzaga, 1-1). I saw something I'd never seen in all my years playing, coaching and watching soccer. A Cal shot hit one post, bounced across the face of the goal, hit the other post and bounced out. Amazing.

For good measure, minutes later a Bears' shot hit the crossbar.

A double-doink. Probably not too common in soccer.

The ball must have had a really whacky spin on it to do that, plus there's the fact that no defender or attacker managed to touch it as it crossed the goal.

Go Bears!!!

Athletics take down the Rays 3-1

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/8/22/24226400/athletics-rays-bido-butler

The Oakland Athletics took on the Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum. This was the fourth and final game of the series. After taking the first game 4-0, the A’s had dropped the last two. Osvaldo Bido will get the start today for the Athletics, facing Jeffrey Springs for the Rays.

Dodgers and the Giants don't lose the off-day.

The Mariners do. Fire the manager because he can't consistently win with a team that has routinely dumped most of their best players (who go on to star for teams in the playoff chase) to avoid having to actually pay them, and don't obtain enough bullpen or offensive help because it would actually cost salary. Forget to tell him until after he reads about it on social media, and it shows up on ESPN.

haha..yeah that is brutal.

OUR PERHAPS HOPEFUL DEMOCRACY

I thought Harris did very well. Seems like an energetic, dynamic person, and so refreshing to see her optimism. Presents a positive contrast with both Biden and T. She really underscored the notion that voting for her means we don’t have to deal with T’s BS anymore - would be sweet!

I really liked her speech, and Walz for that matter as well. But they are energizing people who were already going to vote for them.

I still worry what the plan is to get people whose votes matter but have single issue top of mind issues, like drilling & mining & dozing, not to mention those that are unabashed racists, or unwilling to allow abortion under any circumstances, or are ideological zealots, nationalism-its, or truly believe in Authoritarian government to not vote for Trump, never mind vote for level headed candidates down ballot.

Disturbing as it is, those are driving the outcome in some states and districts.

I dunno, a lot of the game post 2000 is just turning out your own voters. The lack of enthusiasm for Joe B was gonna crush the D’s there. She will at least be better than he was going to be in that regard

Curious if any of the Rs here have seen Kinzinger's speech. I was really impressed- he really sounded like the Rs I grew up with in the 80s/90s, but applied to current moment.

I am not a R, but I did really like his speech. Content great but also he is a really good speaker, just all around well done

It was. Refreshing to hear that there can be a distinction between a conservative view of some things and Trump Maga-dogma zealots. That has been lost on a lot of people, based on the actions of the latter.

It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s question of the day.

You call the room you sleep in the bedroom because there’s a bed in it so why not call the kitchen the refrigerator room or oven room? Why not call the call the dinning room the dining table room? And how about referring to the living room as the sofa room?

Expand full comment

Bedroom is the exception that proves the rule that rooms are typically named for their function. The word kitchen is derived from Germanic kuche (umlauts over the "u"), which derives from the Latin coquere meaning to cook.

Expand full comment

Or, you can start with dining room. Then you have sleeping room, cooking room, bathroom. Living room is too generic but isn’t really incorrect.

Expand full comment

Too many things in the kitchen to not have a catch-all name for it.

I've always wondered why family room or living room? Living room usually is more formal I guess, so maybe the family doesn't gather there?

When there actually fairly often was both in some houses.

ACC Football season opener from Dublin, Ireland tomorrow. Gotta root for the Ramblin’ Wreck in this one. Somehow my dislike of Florida State has already rivaled how I feel about USC, though it’s a different brand of revulsion. FWIW, I actually believe Georgia Tech has a chance in this one. Haynes King will have to get hot and DJ will need to throw a couple or a few INTs but stranger things have happened. https://ramblinwreck.com/fb-preview-fsu-24/

I'd probably actually be rooting for the Jackets in the jalopy as lovable underdogs if I hadn't had the chance to meet and get to know DJ a little last year when he was in Corvallis. I don't think many who have had a chance to be around him a little will be rooting against him, regardless of their opinion of FSU.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I had a feeling that was the case. Nice to hear. And I hope he gets a shot in the NFL. However I’ll be rooting against the ‘Noles’ uniforms tomorrow.
