There is a tropical depression forming just west of Cape Verde that may become a named storm as early as Sunday and may hit the windward islands on Thursday or Friday next week.

While other Orange counties glorify the fruit, the color, or the Dutch - the one is named after William of Orange. In this case, "Orange" is a city in Burgundy (France), which became a fief in the Holy Roman empire... which became a royal principality. Through marriage and treaties, the Orange title was actually held by the Protestants in England. William is a Protestant hero and he has a college named after him about 2 hours away in Williamsburg VA (William & Mary).

I'm not a big soccer guy, but the weather was decent yesterday so went to see Georgetown vs. UVA in women's soccer. Both are early season top ten and one source has UVA number one. UVA seemed in control most of the time and won 1-0 but both teams had goals nullified on offsides. It turned out that a handful of players from the Washington Spirit of the NWSL were sitting a couple rows behind me so at halftime all the young girl players there to watch the game came over to get pictures. The players were gracious, and it was fun to see the expressions on the kids faces when they recognized the pros.

We talked about this in the last DBD.

Cal seems to come in about 10th, but some of the higher candidates are the likes of Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida St., who aren't likely to join the B1G right now.

I'm also a bit skeptical that Utah actually rates as a better candidate than Cal or Stanford; their higher standing is almost entirely based on a better "Market" rating, and I kind of doubt the B1G would view Utah as a better market than Northern California. Anyway, this still kind of supports the idea that if the B1G wants more west-coast travel partners for USC and UCLA then Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and Cal would be the best fits.

Expand full comment
GlueAndBold's avatar

The key issue in the analysis is that it basically double-dips on recency bias, since both media footprint is influenced by performance.

It also leaves out rowing and rugby for non-revenue sports championships.

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

That recency is what matters when trying to attract viewers, and charge for advertising accordingly.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

The "media footprint" scores also look pretty dubious if you dig into them. Cal and Stanford get 4's, apparently because even though the Bay Area is a heavily populated, wealthy market, they don't have enough draw within the market. Okay, maybe.

But then TCU and SMU get 9's, and Rice(!) gets an 8. What? Does anyone really think those schools are big viewer draws in Dallas or Houston? If you bump Cal/Stanford up to 8's for that measure alone then they both go ahead of Utah and come close to Clemson in overall score. I suspect "8" is closer than "4" to how the B1G would be thinking about adding the Bay Area/NorCal footprint.

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

TCU in the Texas market is an order of magnitude ahead of what Cal is. The Frogs have a dedicated and interested audience. Cal does not.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

Do SMU and Rice have a dedicated and interested audience? Bigger than Cal's?

They draw 20k per game (half of what Cal draws) and and their TV ratings don't even approach Cal's (admittedly crappy) recent ratings. Come on.

WHAT? Oh not true - half full when they played us, and super indifferent fans, and the WORST authenticity base as fans, 90% phony - new stuff, zero passion.

This is an uninformed comment.

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

Your description contrasts completely with the experience from the game when OSU played them. However, you may have hit on the key difference, indifference toward their opponent. Not that a ~.500 team in the Cheezit Bowl <might> have warranted a slightly different level of energy than a team at home embarking on what would be an undefeated season (coming off 12 and 11 win seasons) and a Rose Bowl win.

Expand full comment
Cugel's avatar

What year was that? Yeah of course fans are going to be passionate when they are big winning - but they weren't when we played them at home last year. When Cal was winning in the second half for quite some time, they were very quiet - indifferent; sure they started yelling at the very end when they took the lead - but they are just so phony, and the only LOUD thing was their sound-system, not the band, not the fans.
