The DBD is the W4C community bulletin board where we talk about pretty much anything. Let’s talk about that thing you own but you don’t use it for its intended purpose.
Looking at the wind forecast for the Eastern Pacific and Western Atlantic they may make it out of the month, but September looks to start with a bang. There is a tropical depression forming just west of Cape Verde that may become a named storm as early as Sunday and may hit the windward islands on Thursday or Friday next week.
Went to The Wave(?) in Dublin last weekend. WAs pretty nice. thought it'd be in the middle of nowhere. But it's in the middle of suburban development. Part of a city park..seems that maybe the city bought it from someone?
Food situation isn't great. Long line and not the greatest selection. And can't bring food in
While other Orange counties glorify the fruit, the color, or the Dutch - the one is named after William of Orange. In this case, "Orange" is a city in Burgundy (France), which became a fief in the Holy Roman empire... which became a royal principality. Through marriage and treaties, the Orange title was actually held by the Protestants in England. William is a Protestant hero and he has a college named after him about 2 hours away in Williamsburg VA (William & Mary).
Barbecued chicken on the grill last night. I tend to char chicken and have the inside not done to 165 degrees, Fail. However last night I kept the grill temperature below 320 and cooked for almost half an hour. came out almost perfect.
I am finally mastering smoked beef. I seasoned a top round with salt, pepper, rosemary, and garlic, smoked it until it hit 125, and then reverse-seared it to turn all the remaining seasonings into a light crust. It was *chef's kiss*
I have an apartment sized dining table that came with two small bench seats which have since been repurposed into side tables for the living room, after I salvaged to mcm style chairs for the dining table
My entire backyard is full of random boxes, bottles, old cooking utensils, and just a wide array of random things I would have thrown away but instead gave to my kids to play with. They are amazing at incorporating these things into new uses and then making some kind of game or extended dramatic play thing out of them. They actually like that more than getting actual toys. It’s fun to watch them mess around with the stuff.
I have a bike workshop in the basement cobbled together from old items in the house. The workbench is our former dining room table. An old shoe rack holds various oils/fluids/greases, tools, and other assorted things. An old receiver and set of speakers provide the jams.
I have several chairs that nobody sits in. They were specifically bought to pull the room together, which seems like a dumb reason in retrospect. Actually, the cat sleeps in all the chairs... so at least they are getting some use.
DOJ releases redacted affidavit on FBI NARA search & seizure. Not much major stuff - but about half is redacted, it does reinforce that Trump stored stuff in insecure areas, and that there was spy-craft stuff included. Trump's lawyers are creating a defense that he is a mega-ultra-security-clearance-level guy so nothing is secret to him.
Good, call out those hypocrites. Later in the day Biden headlined a rally in MD where he called out Maryland's lone Republican in Congress for taking credit for local infrastructure projects that he voted against.
Greene: "For our government just to say ok your debt is completely forgiven.. it’s completely unfair."
The government forgiving your debt? That's called a Bankruptcy Discharge: Where Government allows you to rack up tens of thousands of dollars of debt purchasing non-durable consumer goods, then just walk away from it.
I'm not a big soccer guy, but the weather was decent yesterday so went to see Georgetown vs. UVA in women's soccer. Both are early season top ten and one source has UVA number one. UVA seemed in control most of the time and won 1-0 but both teams had goals nullified on offsides. It turned out that a handful of players from the Washington Spirit of the NWSL were sitting a couple rows behind me so at halftime all the young girl players there to watch the game came over to get pictures. The players were gracious, and it was fun to see the expressions on the kids faces when they recognized the pros.
Cal seems to come in about 10th, but some of the higher candidates are the likes of Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida St., who aren't likely to join the B1G right now.
I'm also a bit skeptical that Utah actually rates as a better candidate than Cal or Stanford; their higher standing is almost entirely based on a better "Market" rating, and I kind of doubt the B1G would view Utah as a better market than Northern California. Anyway, this still kind of supports the idea that if the B1G wants more west-coast travel partners for USC and UCLA then Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and Cal would be the best fits.
The "media footprint" scores also look pretty dubious if you dig into them. Cal and Stanford get 4's, apparently because even though the Bay Area is a heavily populated, wealthy market, they don't have enough draw within the market. Okay, maybe.
But then TCU and SMU get 9's, and Rice(!) gets an 8. What? Does anyone really think those schools are big viewer draws in Dallas or Houston? If you bump Cal/Stanford up to 8's for that measure alone then they both go ahead of Utah and come close to Clemson in overall score. I suspect "8" is closer than "4" to how the B1G would be thinking about adding the Bay Area/NorCal footprint.
WHAT? Oh not true - half full when they played us, and super indifferent fans, and the WORST authenticity base as fans, 90% phony - new stuff, zero passion.

Terrible call on balls and strikes in the second inning unhinged Kaprielian. He threw a fastball right down the middle at just below belt level (a clear strike) on Gleyber Torres with 2 strikes. It was called a ball. K couldn't believe it and on the next pitch the batter lined a single to center field scoring two runs. A key turning point in the game as the floodgates opened.
FET: The valet at my hotel in Asheville returned my car and noticed my license plate holder. "Cal Golden Bears? Nice! My son is starting classes now as a freshman!" We chatted for a moment and he seemed like a really nice guy. My departing "Go Bears" was not returned, not that it was expected.

Wow
Are there any Cal alum get together plans in Chicago for the Friday night before the ND game?
I had heard of the Chicago area alums hosting an event but it’s sold out. Other than that, I’ll probably be drinking somewhere
Keep us posted. I think we may have doomed together BTW. :)
Also, Riot Fest is that weekend, so I guess I'll pass on Kuma's this trip.

Weather
Home opener forecast is currently 81 and partially cloudy
82 today, 74 tomorrow, 77 Sunday, and sunny. Perfect weather for the State Fair.
We had 2.5" of rain within 24 hours earlier this week to break up a mini-drought. Now it's 90s and humid for the next week.
What is this rain you speak of?
No named storms in August. Great, I probably just jinxed us.

The county that the University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill is in.
There are eight counties in US named Orange. I expected a lot more since there seems to be one everywhere.

In this case, "Orange" is a city in Burgundy (France), which became a fief in the Holy Roman empire... which became a royal principality. I'm trying to think of something... I think everything is, but it's more an issue of not using it very often - like the espresso maker.
I have a bike workshop in the basement cobbled together from old items in the house. The workbench is our former dining room table. An old shoe rack holds various oils/fluids/greases, tools, and other assorted things. An old receiver and set of speakers provide the jams.
I use a thick paperback book to keep the window shade from banging when it’s windy.
I like sleeping with the window open and have awakened many a night to do the same.
I do too, but we have so many skunks passing by the house that on any given night you may wake up to the bedroom reeking of skunk.
So, goodbye, goodbye
I'm going to leave you now
And here's the reason why
I like to sleep with the window open
And you keep the window closed
So goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

I'm also a bit skeptical that Utah actually rates as a better candidate than Cal or Stanford; their higher standing is almost entirely based on a better "Market" rating, and I kind of doubt the B1G would view Utah as a better market than Northern California. Anyway, this still kind of supports the idea that if the B1G wants more west-coast travel partners for USC and UCLA then Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and Cal would be the best fits.
The key issue in the analysis is that it basically double-dips on recency bias, since both media footprint is influenced by performance.
It also leaves out rowing and rugby for non-revenue sports championships.
That recency is what matters when trying to attract viewers, and charge for advertising accordingly.
The "media footprint" scores also look pretty dubious if you dig into them. Cal and Stanford get 4's, apparently because even though the Bay Area is a heavily populated, wealthy market, they don't have enough draw within the market. Okay, maybe.

TCU in the Texas market is an order of magnitude ahead of what Cal is. The Frogs have a dedicated and interested audience. Cal does not.
Do SMU and Rice have a dedicated and interested audience? Bigger than Cal's?
They draw 20k per game (half of what Cal draws) and and their TV ratings don't even approach Cal's (admittedly crappy) recent ratings. Come on.
WHAT? Oh not true - half full when they played us, and super indifferent fans, and the WORST authenticity base as fans, 90% phony - new stuff, zero passion.
