First, I think it's a great pop song in and of itself. But the music video is also the most perfect collection of 80s cliches you'll ever find: singer with big mullet, keytar, saxophone solo in silhouette, electronic drums, red leather jacket, all-denim outfit, female model dancing aimlessly in background, etc.
The Killers also posted a great cover of it last year:
FET: I went to a firm holiday party once at the Palace Hotel and no one at my table was able to figure if what we were being served was chicken or fish. It is still a running joke with my wife. I hit up a McDonalds on Market Street after the party.
This sort of thing was the reason that there was some gun control legislation in the early and mid 70s. Might be a catalyst for it now, if people keep it up.
This Ain't No Picnic was a lot of fun this weekend at the golf course next to the Rose Bowl. Very efficient set up with four stages spaced out nicely so there was little overlapping sound. The course is super dry right now though so lots of dust, but not Coachella levels. The main issue we found was the uber/taxi set up was a mess, we ended up walking about 2mi towards our house before calling an uber on Saturday. Driving in Sunday made it so much easier getting home.
IDLES was amazing as always. Their crowd interaction and the passion that they play with is captivating. LCD Soundsystem was also fantastic as expected. I had no idea I'd be such a fan of Le Tigre, they put on a super positive and engaging performance. The Circle Jerks reunion was a lot of fun, but boy is their lead singer a bitter old man. Wet Leg, JUNGLE, Beach House and Mdou Moctar also were fantastic and the Ying Yang Twins brought a lot of energy for some good early 2000s nostalgia.
If it comes back next year, we'll definitely go again.
Excellent! He is one of my favorite active artists. He is genuinely down to earth and interested in people and life. I got to chat to him last weekend about his trip to our local river. He told me he got to the venue before the rest of band...riding his motorcyle...and decided to take a trip to the river. I doubt anyone even knew he was out there swimming with the locals and flocks of river tourists.
I was really impressed with the Rose Bowl's setup for a festival I went to in May. Plenty of space despite three stages, tons of food/drink vendors so lines were short, extremely easy entry/exit from the parking area, and free water bottles to counteract the 90+ temps during a heatwave.
They were handing out water at the barricades to each stage and had multiple refill stations as well. It's a nice venue and because all the festivals there are new they tend to be undersold which makes things so much easier, from food/drinks to finding your friends
They both rocked out, Wet Leg is fun and the two women are really charming performers. Mdou was sort of jam bandy, but not in a Phish way. Super talented musicians all around.
Watched Manti Te’o doc on Netflix, was pretty good! Crazy how that event basically ruined his life, even though he was the actual victim of the hoax. There is some weird way in which TV viewers perceived themselves as victims and so grew to hate and jeer Te’o. So strange - an early social media tragedy
He grew up an SC fan! And was going to commit there before a weird encounter caused him to change his mind. It was interesting.
In his defense, the Andrew Luck style fellatio he received prior to his fall from grace was all sort of a media creation as well. The interesting angle from the Deadspin guys that broke the story was that to them what this was about was how no one from ESPN, NYT, etc ever did even the most basic fact checking of the story.
Man, I was super unhappy with watching a movie directed by a director that I think is great: Unfaithfully Yours (1948). It varies, there are little bits that are good, little bits that try hard to be funny but aren't, but it's sadly incredibly sexist, which seems weird for him. Oh well.
Watched the first 2 eps of Welcome to Wrexham...brilliant stuff. As someone who is deeply familiar with the lower leagues of English footy, it is engrossing stuff. Mrs FS, who knows almost nothing on the topic, found it extremely entertaining
There are 4 Welsh teams in the English system (at least in the top 5 tiers). Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham and Newport County and they represent, by far, the largest teams in Wales. The Welsh league is semi-pro and is barely better than Sunday pub league level. Equivalent to the English 7th-9th-ish tiers in my rough estimation
I was thinking of adding Hulu to the mix as the package is only $2 more than ESPN+ and Disney+ will be after pending price increases, and this might be what seals the deal.
FET the first soccer match I ever attended in person was at Wrexham
FET: I think either soccer or basketball will be the globally dominant sport of the future. By future I mean like 50 years from now, when I am posting on the DBD from my hospice bed, dribbling applesauce down my chin like a boss. What do you guys think?
isn't soccer already globally dominant? Unless you are referring to financial strength of say, the NFL. The NFL is basically maxed out. They can hope to expand by adding Mexico City and London for example but soccer still has some massive markets they can capture. The US for one... inroads have been made but there is a lot more money to be had here
Oh yeah soccer for sure is #1 right now. I think it is possible (maybe 20% chance) that basketball could pass it in 50 years. I don’t think any other sport has a measurable chance globally.
my enduring issue with managing cable / streaming packages is that I don't really watch much, and my wife and the girls have no idea if they'd actually use them until they look.
Ms Marvel. Watching with the family and just finished the third episode. Good stuff. Nothing groundbreaking with the storytelling but it’s really well done.
Max Homa for the $1.75 million 5th place at the Tour Championship!! Excited for him, what a run. Hitting the flag was one of the most dollar-impactful lucky bloopers I've ever seen.
I'll be interested to see if next year's Red Bull car is similarly so much better than the rest of the field as this year's model is. I read an article in the Guardian noting that the Mercedes team is having a crisis of confidence in next year's car already because they can't seem to get the same results between qualifying and racing using the data from the car, and they need to be able to use the data to work on next year's car also.
There are two trends that Dodger fans should be very used to by now: Julio Urias is dominant in the second half and Mookie Betts crushes the baseball at loanDepot Park. On Sunday morning, both of those trends continued and led the Dodgers to an 8-1 win over the Marlins.
Despite walking a season high four batters, it’s fair to say that Julio Urias was dominant in this one. Urias allowed one hit, a solo homer to Brian Anderson in the fourth inning. Outside of Anderson, Urias did not allow a runner to pass second base, and only one runner, Burdick in the third, reached second. Every other batter that Urias walked was stranded at first base. Julio now holds a 1.05 ERA in the second half, allowing a total of five earned runs across 43 innings.
Betts picked up where he left off, hammering a solo home run to the deepest part of the yard to leadoff the game. His next home run will tie his career high of 32 set in his MVP season in 2018. Betts would add two more hits throughout the day. Max Muncy and Justin Turner each had big days at the plate, adding three hits a piece. The Dodgers added a second first inning run on a Justin Turner RBI single, taking an early 2-0 lead.
I feel like teams knew about this before the draft. That would help explain why he slid from a projected 3-4 round pick down to the 6th and wasn’t the first punter drafted.
I think the Penn State lion is the worst. He is creepy AF, not original or funny in any way, and due to their scandals he kind of looks like a pederast to me
Fiat - were they the sea lions when you were there or did you attend after the change over. I always thought it was a funny and smart transition, "just paint them all yellow and add antennae"
There was still a sea lions statue outside of one of the lecture halls when I was there.
Just before my freshman year (I matriculated in September '81) Chancellor Sinsheimer had announced that sea lions would be the mascot. I graduated June '85. The following May (1986) was the mascot vote. I was part of the class that fell in between both events.
If I could have voted for Slugs while a student, I would have.
It is not dumb, it's silly and campy and very self aware. But it is not a "cool looking" mascot. It was old Sammy while I was there and transitioned to new Sammy I think my senior year.
I remember that costume looking very ragged by the end. I remember him being in Porter meadow on 420 taking bong hits with students. The UCSC version of Oski drinking through his eye.
America's preeminent design university has sports. Their mascot are testicles. The basketball team calls themselves the "Balls". The hockey team is the "Nads". Their mascot is Scrotie and I ain't linking a picture of that because otherwise my search history is gonna be weird.
I had no idea, the entire time that I lived right near RISD, that they had sports - and every time I find out, I immediately forget, so I can be surprised all over again
I have a problem with Qasim Rashid's criticism, precisely because the criticism is tone deaf. I also think it's self-righteous and plays to an audience.
I understand where Mr. Rashid is coming from and I generally agree that racism *should* be called out for what it is. Context matters, though. And if you're going to speak to bigots and have them hear you, really hear you, you have to speak in ways that they can hear what you're saying. You also need allies within the larger community to chip away at the the walls that allow the racist mindset protection.
Holmoe's language is working towards both goals and makes use of the audience's worldview in addressing the issue of the moment. If Holmoe had used the word "racism" it would have thrown up a wall between him and the audience. Instead, he used language that the audience could understand and use to empathize with him (the speaker) and other people *who are not LDS.*
Finally, Rashid misses the mark when he says, "My guy - racism is also bad against people you don't know." Everyone is knowable, even people you don't know now. That's an unspoken but implied nugget of truth when Holmoe says, "...if you knew her, you'd love her."
Yes, Holmoe's language is not strident. It is not hard hitting in the way that most people expect or demand from the moment. It does not satisfy the urge to hit back with unmistakable intent and clarity. But it does hit back. And it does have impact beyond the moment.
Yes to all of this. Rashid's criticism would be appropriate for delivering these remarks to a progressive activist audience . . . his audience. Tom Holmoe is addressing a very different audience.
I swear, way too many Twitter leftists are more focused on being RIGHT than on being EFFECTIVE. I suspect Holmoe's remarks are very effective at driving better behavior with conservative Mormons.
"I swear, way too many Twitter leftists are more focused on being RIGHT than on being EFFECTIVE."
This echoes my enduring criticism of "progressive" politics in America. It also goes hand-in-hand with my criticism of "centrist" or mainstream elected Democrats who say very little and seem to cower in fear of the GOP. Honestly, mainstream elected Democrats seem to be afraid of Reagan's ghost. They are timid in the face of small government, tax cutting, corporate and billionaire hugging Grover Norquist wannabes.
Big government is necessary in a nation of 333 million people that intends to be the world's superpower with a global population of 8 billion. Deal with it.
I don't think this criticism is warranted. Holmoe did address the issue. He did it in person. He did it with passion, empathy, and force. This isn't just defensive PR BS that you so often read about. No, he didn't use the word "racism" explicitly but everyone knows what he's talking about. While I don't agree with BYU and the LDS values, why hit someone who is pulling in the right direction and saying the right thing?
I tend to agree with you except I think he makes an excellent point when he says: "He qualifies 'if you knew her you’d love her.” My guy—racism is also bad against people you don’t know.'"
I think it's pretty well established that (especially for conservative people) one of the best ways to knock down prejudice is to personalize it: make people connect it in their minds to someone in their lives, friends or family that they know. IMO Holmoe is doing the right thing here to frame it this way. Not for logical reasons, but for emotional reasons. It will play well to his audience.
Tarheels played against FCS Florida A&M, a team that was missing 25 players and didn't forfeit because they didn't have the $450k penalty. UNC still had a hard time pulling away until late - finally winning 56-24.
Charlie Ragle's team gets smoked by UNLV 52-21. His Idaho State team was trailing 45-7 at halftime and had given up 351 passing yards. Cal plays UNLV in 2 weeks.
Scott Frost loses a one score game AGAIN, this time as double digit favorites over Northwestern. He bizarrely goes for an onside kick up 11 with 9 minutes to go in the 3rd. Huskers fans are apoplectic.
I heard this morning that Frost's buyout gets cut in half from $15M to $7.5M on Oct. 1. If true, he'd better have a SPECTACULAR September in order to keep his job!
Also, who times their buyout schedule during the season? Doesn't seem too smart and only gives the university a reason to fire a coach mid-season.
That's why Nebraska timed it that way. Clearly, the administration doesn't want to have to wait until the end of the season to fire a coach they're done with.
They have a four-game homestand coming up featuring North Dakota, Georgia Southern (3-9 in 2021), Oklahoma, and Indiana (2-10 in 2021). I look forward to whatever creative ways Scott will come up with to lose to Indiana or GA Southern (and somehow stay within one score of Oklahoma).
Clarification: You also need to install the Pac-12 Now App on your TV, it's one of the options among apps available for the TV itself. Once you do that the device recognizes the stream from the phone. Then you can watch any of the local networks (Pac-12 Bay Area for example) which if you are out of area and even have Comcast you cannot normally watch.
Two things I desperately want out of the coming football season: 1) finally win the Big Game at Memorial Stadium, haven't done so since 2008 -- 14 years ago. 2) Beat motherf***ing Arizona. Sick of fluky/close losses to them.
Do you prefer clean, tidy, or delightfully chaotic?

Just before my freshman year (I matriculated in September '81) Chancellor Sinsheimer had announced that sea lions would be the mascot. I graduated June '85. The following May (1986) was the mascot vote. I was part of the class that fell in between both events.
If I could have voted for Slugs while a student, I would have.
It is not dumb, it's silly and campy and very self aware. But it is not a "cool looking" mascot. It was old Sammy while I was there and transitioned to new Sammy I think my senior year.
Old: https://www.indybay.org/uploads/2008/04/17/sammy-the-slug.jpg
New: https://news.ucsc.edu/2011/09/images/sammysmallface350.jpg
That picture of Old Sammy reminds me of Jabba the Hutt.
I remember that costume looking very ragged by the end. I remember him being in Porter meadow on 420 taking bong hits with students. The UCSC version of Oski drinking through his eye.
Yeah, everyone knows that it's not a typical ferocious-animal mascot and that was the full intent. But it is a goofy mascot.
RISD.

Lee Corso has no idea where he is in general. He should've been put out to pasture when he had his stroke
Former Cal football head coach criticized for response to racial abuse
https://twitter.com/QasimRashid/status/1564004292167704577?s=20&t=tQgaeWMtW1Mf9PCfvkkWrw
Hmmmm... I know nothing about this story - but I know it happened - weird?
The incentives of Twitter are to always find a reason something isn't good enough.
That's true, but then again sometimes something really isn't good enough.
Woof
Tarheels played against FCS Florida A&M, a team that was missing 25 players and didn't forfeit because they didn't have the $450k penalty. UNC still had a hard time pulling away until late - finally winning 56-24.

63 points scored by [checks notes] Vandy. This TD run by Vandy QB Mike Wright features a fantastic block and a QB who is faster than the secondary.

Charlie Ragle's team gets smoked by UNLV 52-21. His Idaho State team was trailing 45-7 at halftime and had given up 351 passing yards. Cal plays UNLV in 2 weeks.

At least Idaho State won the 2nd half. ;-)
Idaho State is terrible, even by FCS standards
UNLV is as well

Scott Frost loses a one score game AGAIN, this time as double digit favorites over Northwestern. He bizarrely goes for an onside kick up 11 with 9 minutes to go in the 3rd. Huskers fans are apoplectic.

Scott Frost is the offensive version of Wilcox.
Won’t last the season…too awful a performance, punctuated by a questionable onside kick, with too many eyes on it.
Truthfully, Wilcox & Frost would probably make for an interesting tandem if he brought him on as OC following Musgrave’s likely dismissal in Dec.
This is how Cal should have restructured Wilcox’s contract.
That would be an interesting tandem.
My daughter (Northwestern grad) was super happy!
Also, Fitz is dumb.
Your annual reminder that any school with Dakota in its name is good.
Dakota Johnson is also good.
She seems like a good actress (material notwithstanding), though perhaps a bit on high on the socal nutjob scale.
Perhaps he heard that Lincoln has waitresses who want their oil checked by a married man.

That 2nd half after the onside kick was so painful to watch. Slow motion train wreck.
CAL
Honest, if stupid, question - is the UC Davis game televised?
Yes, 1pm on Pac-12 Bay Area (we don't even have the dignity of appearing on the main channel)
Out of area you can stream the local PAC 12 network stations using the App otherwise they are not available which is a real problem thanks Larry
It’s a trick question because in theory it is televised but it is televised on the Pac12 network so good luck finding it televised.
Yes
so i genuinely have no idea how to get the Pac12 Network for the football season. I'm guessing Cal will be on it A LOT this year
As mentioned below, Sling does carry it. I typically just sign up for Sling for the season.
You can watch it on YouTube Pac12 international channel. No subscription is required. Just use VPN and select another country such as Canada.
Sign up for Sling or FuboTV for the season. They carry it.
I don't have cable TV. Has anybody used their app?
I downloaded pac-12 now app on my phone. I can stream anything to my Samsung smart tv and it looks like hd quality and it's free.
Pixel 6 phone by the way
I have someone’s login and the app is garbage.
Two things I desperately want out of the coming football season: 1) finally win the Big Game at Memorial Stadium, haven't done so since 2008 -- 14 years ago. 2) Beat motherf***ing Arizona. Sick of fluky/close losses to them.
Go Bears!! (Sorry goldenone)
