Pac-12 champ guaranteed a spot. Some will way we should stay in the Pac-12 for a better chance. Though if Oregon and Washington leave, Pac-12 will drop out of P5 level.
Currently 95, will get to 99 around noon, might top 100 for the 3rd day in a row. Couldn't be more excited to cool off in Berkeley tomorrow on a nice 82deg day.
I checked the forecast and the high for berkeley hills tomorrow is 79. Yesterday the forecast was 90 - good news for those sitting in the stands tomorrow. Last year the Sac state game was super hot.
Pacific ocean effect. The Oregon coast has had 30-40 degree cooler temperatures than only a few miles inland several times lately for the same foggy reason.
I enjoy driving down to the coast for work each day, watching it march steadily down as you go west on the 10. It was 90 at Sepulveda and a comfortable 79 in Marina del Rey yesterday, just 3mi west.
As a pale white guy of Irish descent who gets totally roasted after like 5 minutes at a sunny beach or pool, I love the SF weather. I totally get why most find it depressing and lame, but I love it.
I couldn't believe the crap from the judge in SW Florida whom Trump appointed. She is a definite Trumpie who wants to get him off the hook. Completely vapid as well and probably unqualified.
Also watched Biden's speech which wasn't bad lashing out at Graham and the MAGA crowd. We really are at an inflection point of losing democracy and once it gets out of the box it will probably never go back in. Like Augustus who casually stamped out the Republic by saying he was assuming power as the first citizen to preserve it, it never came back and became more and more odious over time until by the 4th century the moniker of emperors was dominus noster (Our lord) even though coins featured legends saying gloria republicae on the reverse.
FCS Portland State had 2 chances to close the door on SJSU in the last 7 minutes, but failed. Spartans come from behind at the end to squeek out a win.
ASU beat NAU in a 101-degree heat bowl in Tempe, Pitt beat WV 38-31 behind Kedon Slovis, with JT Daniels on the WV side, and Fresno State beat Cal Poly 35-7 and Remigio had a couple of energetic YAC plays which we didn't see much of at Cal.
ASU vs NAU kicked off at 7:00 PM, just a few minutes after sunset. I also noticed in the box score that TOP only added up to 56:14, not the full 60:00.
Any idea if the game was deliberately shortened due to weather?
I observed during the game that they had some issues with live game stats, which is not all that unusual. I checked one stat sheet this morning, and it added up. I'd attribute that to a temporary issue, probably related to change of possession at some point, which might not have gotten cleaned up until post game.
yeah, saw that. two reasons why I won't be buying them!
we were acatully at chase center over the weekend – they have a Sunday 10 to 2 event in front with lots of kids stuff. free. but also went to the Team Store. don't think that even there were there any t-shirts over $60.
Oakland lost the series finale 7-5 to the Nationals.
The big story today was the debut of Oakland’s prized pitching prospect and he delivered, showcasing a filthy arsenal that should have A’s fans salivating over the future, and the lineup did some damage, but the bullpen was awful tonight, costing the team a win multiple times and ensuring a series loss to the worst team in the league.
While there was a baseball game being played between the two worst teams in the league, all eyes were on the mound today to see the debut of one of the top young prospects in the game.
It seemed like everyone wanted to see Oakland’s prize starting pitcher as fast as possible as the first three A’s went down 1-2-3 to start this game.
Nats first walk-off win all season. The guy who hit the winning homer spent ten years in the minor leagues and finally made the bigs at age 30. In ninety-nine major league at-bats he's hitting .351 with seven homers. A good story.
Citi Field saw a close series for all three days. The Dodgers made a few mistakes in the series finale, helping the Mets to a frustrating 5-3 loss on Thursday evening in New York.
In an exceedingly tight series, the little things can get amplified, sometimes making baseball a game of inches. A ranging Gavin Lux couldn’t get to a slow ground ball to second base in enough time to get Starling Marte to open the sixth inning. Francisco Lindor cashed in the close play with an RBI double, then stole third base on a throw from catcher Will Smith that beat him, only to have Max Muncy field the ball in front of the bag, without enough room to tag Lindor.
Seven pitches later, Darin Ruf flied to the warning track in left, more than deep enough to bring home Lindor. Two close plays led to two runs against Chris Martin, turning a one-run Dodgers advantage into a one-run deficit.
Sling Tv has the PAC networks but it’s in the sports extra add-on, meaning you’ll first need a sub at 40$ish/ month, then pay the additional 10$ or so to add the Pac12 network.
I also have said this before - but you can use the Pac-12 Now App to stream to your TV from your phone if it's a Smart web-enabled TV. So for example you can stream Pac-12 Bay Area from anywhere if you have the App. Whereas, if you are out of the Bay Area you will not get the channel even if you have Comcast/Xfinity. The process was (1) downloading the app on my phone and (2) activating the App on the TV itself from the Samsung gallery. I then tested women's volleyball on Pac-12 Bay Area and got HD quality on the TV.
"The Big Ten is reportedly "targeting" five schools for expansion, including Notre Dame, Oregon, Washington and two more Pac-12 schools. Those final two programs likely include Cal and Stanford. "
I mean what other 2 schools would it be? Although given they didn't specifically name the other 2 means maybe they reached out to multiple schools and only the 2 that accept their terms get in? I'd guess a reduced payout. Do Furd and Cal accept if it's a reduced payout?
Arizona and Arizona State. But only because they could bring the Phoenix media market, which is 11th largest in the US and 3rd largest in the Pac-12 (behind LA and the SF Bay Area).
For 2022, it's about 140K students enrolled on 5 physical campuses and online. There are 5 Phoenix metro area campuses (enrollment = approx. 79K). ASU is also online and has accepted enrollment from approx. 61K students.
Wow, you're right. They have 135k students: 78k on campus and 58k online (the rest are scattered around their other campuses). I had no idea they had anywhere close to that many students.
Seems unlikely, even as "traveling partners" to UDub and Oregon. Neither school adds much in the way of a media market share, they don't expand the footprint, and they don't have a strong non-revenue sport history or presence (OSU's baseball prowess notwithstanding).
Cal and Stanf*rd, on the other hand, brings more on each bullet point.
It some ways, it makes more sense than the other East Coast Schools you mention: 1) It adds the Bay area media market; 2) It adds even more games in the 10p.m EST timeslot for the Big-10 media contract; 3) addresses the some of the biggest concerns of the UCLA/USC alumni regarding rivalries and travel schedule of non-revenue support; 4) this adds stability to UCLA/USC remaining in the Big-10 long term; 5) adds crown gems of academia of the West Coast.
Yes, absolutely, unless they want to be relegated to the MWC. I'd assume the reduced payout would have performance contingencies for reaching playoffs, bowl games, etc.
Psyched to be in Memorial Stadium tomorrow. Haven't missed a home opener since 1981 (and only a handful of other games in the last 41 years). No matter how they fuck with college football it's still a great venue and a great time surrounded by a loyal and loving fan base. If you're near section E drop by and say hello I'm in the top row wearing a script Cal hat. Go Bears!
That's impressive! I haven't been to a game in person during the Wilcox era. Though I am about 2-1/2 hours from Memorial, the logistics are a bit of a challenge, though I do hope to bring my 6-year old to a game sometime this year.
No 3 can't come so I invited a friend. His parents ended up getting us 2 near them in the fat cat seats. Going to sit with the WFC group for the first half, get some food in the club at halftime, then go up and sit by them for the 2nd half.

CFP is expanding to 12 teams. So long traditional bowl system. You overbloated espn cash cow.
Pac-12 champ guaranteed a spot. Some will way we should stay in the Pac-12 for a better chance. Though if Oregon and Washington leave, Pac-12 will drop out of P5 level.
its the 6 highest rated conf champs, regardless of P5/G5
If the remaining Pac raids the MWC then they're basically assured a spot. Seems unlikely the MAC, C-USA, or Sun Belt could compete in most years.

Mid-80s, no humidity. Can't complain, especially given that horrific heat wave in CA

I checked the forecast and the high for berkeley hills tomorrow is 79. Yesterday the forecast was 90 - good news for those sitting in the stands tomorrow. Last year the Sac state game was super hot.
Supposed to be super hot in California, which is why this morning is super cold in the Bay Area because of the fog!
As usual, San Francisco is expected to remain stubbornly comfortable in the mid-70s while everyone else is roasting.
Well, not ALL the time, depends on what way the wind is blowing.
Pacific ocean effect. The Oregon coast has had 30-40 degree cooler temperatures than only a few miles inland several times lately for the same foggy reason.

Yup, though sometimes in Sept/Oct the heat bubble can prevent that marine layer from having its usual effect.
It's 55 on the roof deck!
As a pale white guy of Irish descent who gets totally roasted after like 5 minutes at a sunny beach or pool, I love the SF weather. I totally get why most find it depressing and lame, but I love it.

Penn State beat Purdue (which was a fun game to watch, but I hate Penn State)
7 lead changes! That's all you need to know about how fun that game was!
That Pitt-WVU game was wild. An excellent start to college football season.
I'm skeptical that as a neutral I'll find a game I enjoy more this weekend
ASU vs NAU kicked off at 7:00 PM, just a few minutes after sunset. I also noticed in the box score that TOP only added up to 56:14, not the full 60:00.
Any idea if the game was deliberately shortened due to weather?
No. Game went to normal completion.
I observed during the game that they had some issues with live game stats, which is not all that unusual. I checked one stat sheet this morning, and it added up. I'd attribute that to a temporary issue, probably related to change of possession at some point, which might not have gotten cleaned up until post game.
Ah, I see.
That explains a lot. I wondered why the TOP didn't add up.

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/report-big-ten-targeting-5-major-schools-for-conference-expansion
Washington and Oregon already talked to Big 10. What is Cal doing? Are they just sitting and waiting for a phone call?
"The Big Ten is reportedly "targeting" five schools for expansion, including Notre Dame, Oregon, Washington and two more Pac-12 schools. Those final two programs likely include Cal and Stanford. "

A reduced B1G payout may be more than a full share of Pac 12 with U$C and UCLA in the league.
Pick your poison.
Arizona and Arizona State. But only because they could bring the Phoenix media market, which is 11th largest in the US and 3rd largest in the Pac-12 (behind LA and the SF Bay Area).
Doesn’t ASU have like 100k students or something ridiculous like that? You can get the eyeballs from the alums alone

Sorry, I don't know how to operate the sarcasm font, I was definitely not serious about these programs. They are definitely MWC bound.
OSU and WSU are in serious trouble. They're about to go small time or go home.
Virginia and Carolina could be the other 2, per long standing rumors in the media. Could be BS tho.
The article specifies 2 more Pac-12 schools, though.
Can't imagine who else they'd prefer over Cal and Stanford. Utah and Arizona have okay cases, but I doubt they're higher in the pecking order.
Then it is most likely Cal & Stanford, tho who TF knows.
