She is a bit of an opportunist, it appears. That's a double edged sword, if ever I've seen one. She's open to charges of hypocrisy, though I'd guess she'll ignore that.

She might confound everything, though, and perform well. Or she might be in over her head.

Truly hard to say at this point.

So far she's a moron cosplaying Thatcher. Maybe that latter part will drop off now that the party have voted her in, but I doubt it.

I spent a few minutes on twitter last night agog at the level of enthusiasm that people are bringing to their favored conspiracy theories and grudges against specific actors and such. I mean, I recognize the behavior from college football and soccer, but those have marginally less racism and misogyny 😜

sycasey's avatar

I cannot believe how much detail people are going into when analyzing the "drama" behind this movie.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I don't know about that but the choice of collar on that shirt??

Terence's avatar

It's a normal collar, find a new slant.

Terence's avatar

when one high profile actor gets both accused of abuse AND gets fired from the movie that's one thing. When the director and the star won't talk that's another. When the other lead clearly can't act and is dating the director, that's a third.

sycasey's avatar

The abuse accusation is interesting. But the rest is just gossipy gossip run amok.

O.Overall's avatar

Yes though didn’t Wilde actually leave Sudeikis during the filming of this movie, contemporaneously with sleeping with Harry Styles? I mean even if Wilde and Sudeikis were not famous, that is a real thing

O.Overall's avatar

Yeah I have a feeling in 5 years there will be a movie about the making of this movie that will be about 100x as popular as this movie (which seems to be getting bad reviews)

sycasey's avatar

I'm not sure how this movie could possibly get good reviews now, given all of the tabloid nonsense surrounding it.

Oy. A Trump appointed judge, of course. Just creates the appearance of legal system not being impartial, which appearance whether true or not is bad for the legal system.

However sometimes when a judge is going to rule against you they will give you all the interim/provisional rulings like admitting all your evidence so that your appellate chances are worse. Here I suppose you could see the special master as something like that. But I dunno, just seems like Trump hack being a Trump hack.

Took No 3 to watch Top Gun Maverick Sat night with a $3 IMAX ticket. He thought the sequel was better than the original.

I started Stranger Things. Needed something to binge on my flight to/from Lisbon. So far through about 4 episodes and am enjoying it.

SGBear's avatar

Peaky Blinders (S5). For fans of the series, it was distinctly meh and probably the worst season. (11/19, WB). I think I'm done and won't go out of my way to watch the movie if/when it hits theaters.

SGBear's avatar

I finished The Bear (Hulu, 15/19 WB). Spouses and significant others were spot on in that it was very "yelly". But I thought it was quite satisfying. A story of ego, humility, culture clash, loyalty, contrition, and human flaws.

CruzinBears's avatar

Caught up on House of the Dragon, it seems to be getting better with each episode, save for a couple overly CGI'd shots. I may be biased with a more nautical focus. The jumps in time may also take some time getting used to.

Cugel's avatar

I don't know that The Rings of Power are great, but the second one was enjoyable, and both were very visual; my sister (visiting from NoVA) and daughter liked them, my wife was a bit "eh"...

sycasey's avatar

You can definitely tell they spent money on it.

I'm liking it so far, but if people expect the same breathless pace the Peter Jackson movies had they're going to be disappointed. The show is actually a bit more like reading Tolkien: some interesting stuff is going to happen, but you also might be taking a break for a few pages of poetry first.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Is this series based on any books? I never read any of Tolkiens work but I didn’t enjoy all the movies.

Cugel's avatar

Eh, not "books" - outlines - its not The Silmarillion (which funny side story, my wife at the time was pissed at me for buying a first addition when it came out for $10) just some notes from various books.

sycasey's avatar

I think it's based on the appendices, which are more like history/information books about Middle Earth than a proper story like LOTR or The Hobbit.

GoldenSD81's avatar

They looked beautiful, great visuals. My wife and I enjoyed them.

A few potential spoilers:

That is Gandalf that fell from the sky right?

The kid is the son of the elf and the village woman.

Terence's avatar

Iowa vs. FCS South Dakota State was like a 1922 game.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore/_/gameId/401405062

Iowa's QB got a 1.1 QBR. The game featured 286 offensive yards combined by both teams, not including the 956 yards via 21 punts or 81 yards of penalties. Iowa wins because they got two safeties.

GoldenSD81's avatar

GoldenSD81's avatar

I didn’t expect Oregon to win but I thought they would keep it close for a half. They got thoroughly destroyed and didn’t look like a top 20 team at all.

Bo Nix is not a good QB, so if he is starting that must mean the guys behind him are bad.

rocksanddirt's avatar

Oregon is doing Oregon things for week 1. The players are still relying on athleticism, not discipled play and that simply doesn't work against even decently coached high end teams.

The $10,000 question: Is this good for Cal?

No. If Oregon or Utah makes College Playoffs, Pac12 will get $6 million which will be distributed (evenly, I believe) among 12 schools.

Correct. The Oregon and Utah losses both will wind up costing all 12 teams in the conference $s.

Eh, a mediocre Oregon doesn't impact us negatively as long as someone gets in the CFP. The Utah loss hurts.

Giants hit 4 home runs off Andrew Heaney to beat Dodgers

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/9/5/23338608/andrew-heaney-home-runs-dodgers-mistakes-giants

On a fourth consecutive sweltering night at Dodger Stadium, it was perfect “tees off” weather in Los Angeles. The Giants did just that on Monday, slamming four home runs off Andrew Heaney in a 7-4 win in the series opener that raised more questions than answers.

September is about sorting out the roster for October for the Dodgers, especially on the pitching side, with several hurlers in various states of rehabilitation trying to make one final push for the postseason.

On one hand, Heaney stands out, with the highest strikeout rate on the entire staff (35.1 percent), and is apparently healthy after two long stints on the injured list with shoulder troubles, having made his last eight starts. He has 36 strikeouts against only three walks over his last four starts, so things should be looking up.

F1: Tire strategy was an ongoing theme on Sunday as Max Verstappen won the Dutch Grand Prix. Meanwhile Ferrari managed to sink to comical new depths by only bringing out three tires for Carlos Sainz during a pit stop.

A's didn't lose...but they also didn't win.

Berkelium97's avatar

After watching Cal's tire fire of offense in the first quarter on Saturday afternoon, I headed out to watch the A's tire fire of an offense get blown out 9-1 by Baltimore. But Cf-98 got a home run ball, so it was all worth it.

Lewis Brinson states his MVP case

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2022/9/5/23338651/giants-dodgers-recap-lewis-brinson-logan-webb-jd-davis-david-villar-thairo-estrada

Lewis Brinson, he of a career .248 slugging percentage and .578 OPS, was the leadoff hitter for the San Francisco Giants on Labor Day as they attempted to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, the runaway best team in baseball.

It was a sign of the season the Giants have had. It was a sign because a poor-hitting leadoff batter is to be expected from a middling offense (the Giants are 12th in the Majors in runs per game, and 16th in wRC+). And it was a sign because the Giants, in the playoff picture only in the sense that they haven’t yet been mathematically eliminated, are at a place where playing an intriguing, bad player is more important than playing a known, good one.

And that’s exactly what Brinson is. A former top-10ish prospect who has never been good at the Major League level, but who is still full of tools and potential.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING

Lots of folks in the Outer East Bay probably saw too much of that phrase. I only saw it on my phone yesterday in spite of it being hot in Berkeley on Saturday and Sunday.

A headline on my SFChronicle app said that temps in the Sacramento Valley could reach 119 deg. F. yesterday. Yikes! Nowhere near that hot in Berkeley, but it was still hot.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Just went to Costco in Concord to get gas for my mom before I leave for Lisbon. 119 over by Monument and 680.

heyalumnigo's avatar

About 106 in Moraga yesterday. Assume it'll be the same today.

FiatSlug's avatar

Very much better than 110+ degrees, but still very, very hot, indeed.

I feel rather guilty sitting in an air conditioned space, especially when others are sweltering on the other side of the windows.

heyalumnigo's avatar

No AC here. Though there is a portable floor unit we rotate between the family room (turning on around dinner) and in the master bedroom so No 3 can use it going to sleep.

CruzinBears's avatar

Thankful we haven't seen those temps here in Glendale, I think we maxed out at 103 and it should slowly trend down throughout the week. Also very thankful for our <5yr old central AC, which struggles to maintain the temps in our uninsulated home, but can usually keep us under 80F in these extremes.

Wiata78's avatar

Hit 109F in Marin yesterday. Crazy--the predicted high was 99, but kept going up and up.

Same thing seems to be happening today! Predicted high of 98, but it's already 99 before 2 pm.

Wiata78's avatar

Temp is now 100, and high is revised upward to 106. 2:24 pm.

FiatSlug's avatar

It seems the forecasts underestimated the impact of the heat dome. I notice that today's high in Berkeley was also a few degrees higher than forecast. However, temps are starting to come down already. Down 10 degrees in the last two hours.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I hope it goes down even further. Going to Top Dog with No 3 for dinner so I can get No 1 and his GF a hat and tshirt.

Between 1947 and 1952 the Bears boasted a record of 34-3-1 at Memorial Stadium.

FiatSlug's avatar

The losses were to USC twice (1947, 1951), and UCLA (1952). The tie was in the 1950 Big Game on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (November 25). The score of the 1950 Big Game was 7-7.

As good as Pappy was, he had a 3-7 record against U$C, beating them only in the Rose Bowl years. So weird that Holmoe of all people (3-2) did better against the Trojans.

Holmoe's success against U$C coincided with years that were particularly putrid by U$C standards. Nonetheless, I am glad Cal could burst the condoms in those years.
