Greenland standard time (the big chunk of Greenland) just started observing daylight savings in March 2023, which is odd because two thirds of it has perpetual sun during summer.
Australia has three time zones that pretty close to dividing the country into thirds. The Western and Eastern ones are two hours apart, as you'd expect. But the one in the middle is 30 minutes from the one on the east and 90 minutes from the one on the west.
When I was a Boy Scout in Troop 7, Berkeley, BSA, our troop had a summer camp we shared with Troop 366 in South Pasadena. It was at Lake Sawmill not far from Emigrant Gap in the Sierra.
Our "time zone", if you will, was known as Sawmill Time. It was 30 minutes behind PDT and 30 minutes ahead of PST. So, we were 30 minutes behind the rest of California and Arizona, and 90 minutes behind MDT. Not the same as the Australian example above, just kinda syncopated.
Maybe because all of China is on Beijing Time even though it spans five zones geographically. Also, China is on year-round Standard Time. The last time that China observed Daylight Time was in 1991.
EDIT: Compare and contrast with Russia, which has 11 time zones (from UTC +2 hours to UTC +12 hours).
I don't know why, but I previously didn't know that Auburn AL was in Central time zone. I learned the hard way that most of Indiana was in East Coast time thanks to the Notre Dame game. I knew UP Michigan is in East Coast zone. But Auburn is in Eastern Alabama, essentially the furthest east in Central time zone. So there were were waiting on the bus going back from Auburn at 7:30 pm and it's fully night time.
I didn't know Indiana was in both time zones. I've only been to the areas within a couple of hours from Chicago and always thought all of Indiana was in central.
Most of Indiana is in the Eastern Time Zone. The northwest and southwest corners of the state are in the Central Time Zone. Not saying that I know with certainty, but the split may have to do with the commercial interests of the smaller areas in the Central Time Zone being more heavily influenced by commerce with areas in Illinois (northwest Indiana) and Illinois and Kentucky (southwest Indiana). The US Dept. of Transportation makes a decision based on a petition from the state.
The Uniform Time Act allows for the states to make adjustments in the boundaries of their time zones when a state is split between two time zones.
Also, a state can petition to be reclassified in an adjoining time zone. My understanding is that Florida may ask to be placed in the *Atlantic* Time Zone (UTC-4 hours) as opposed to its current designation in the Eastern Time Zone (UTC-5 hours). That way, if Florida were designated as part of the Atlantic Time Zone the Florida legislature could then pass a bill to revert to year-round standard time. The net effect would be the same as if they were on permanent Daylight Saving Time while in the Eastern Time Zone. Personally, I think a move such as this would be a mistake that will be hard to unravel.
The northwest corner is definitely because they are part of the Chicagoland metro and want to stay on the same clock with that city. I suppose the southwest corner must have the same reasons.
The central/eastern time zone runs kind of NW to SE through the middle of Ky. I remember when No 1 was 12 they played in an all-star tournament outside Bowling Green. Had to make sure all the parents knew the tournament was in slow time (central time zone) so that parents got there at the right time. At least going from eastern to central you don't end up 1 hour late, just 1 hour early.
I think Indiana switched to DST sometime right after we moved to Ky in 2004. I think before they switched to DST, the cities near Chicago and Louisville would still do DST with the rest of the state not doing DST. They wanted less confusion near the big cities.
that bus ride after game when it got dark so quick made everyone sleepy. we had dinner and headed straight home despite some notion that we might go out
GOP-controlled NC Dept of Elections rules that RFK Jr applied to remove his name from ballots too late, so he had to stay on the ballots rather than reprint them with him. The GOP controlled NC Supreme Court overrules them, which means that the absentee ballots will be significantly delayed, significantly hurting the DEMS.
Not watching because I'm not undecided. Who are these undecideds, who had four years of President Trump, four years of VP Harris, having them be polar opposites, and being all🤷♂️
Cops are giving more and more evidence that they are not to be trusted with power. I wonder how much of this is fueled by racism and how much of it is fueled by power trips brought on by having a badge or some combination of both.
We must do better in hiring and training police officers.
Sportswriter Sally Jenkins penned an excellent opinion piece about this in the article below. For those who have not see the full police body cam video (i.e. beyond the part where TH was not rolling down his window the entire way), please view the whole footage before weighing in on appropriateness of police behaviour (elsewhere I have seen soooooo much commentary that only focused on the window and nothing beyond that, making it clear to me that lots have opinions on TH without viewing all the footage). There were zero seconds allowed for him to stand up out of that car.
Some of both. And yes, we need to do a better job of hiring and training AND DIRECTING police officers. But that will require in many cases first doing a better job of hiring and training those who do the hiring and training.
I think the training is a big piece. Treating every traffic stop like it’s a life or death shoot out at the OK Corral just makes them super on edge and almost guaranteed to overreact and do crazy shit. This incident reminded me not just of the many crazy overreactions with black guys but also the recent Scottie Scheffler thing
You're not the only one to bring up Scottie Scheffler. Candace Buckner (WaPo sports columnist) also brought up Scheffler as a contrast to Tyreek Hill, particularly in the aftermath. Which also gave rise to my comment about the badge bringing on power trips.
Ugh. America really has to do better with law enforcement everywhere. I realize that policing is a job that carries huge risks with it everyday, but that's not an excuse for substandard behavior.
The Dodgers faced similar struggles they experienced against the Cubs back in April on Monday, as they dropped the series opener by a final score of 10-4.
Walker Buehler was tasked with the start to kick things off against the veteran Kyle Hendricks, who entered with a ghastly 6.60 ERA and a 3-11 record.
The "vibes" around the Niners hadn't been good for a while, so I was expecting a struggle. It was for about the first three drives and then they just dominated. So much for vibes!
I watched the first three quarters. That’s the most I’ve watched of a game in I can’t remember how long. Niners looked good and could have won more handily if not settling for so many FGs.
SMU benches Preston Stone, announces that Kevin Jennings is the new starter against TCU in 2 weeks. SMU may be exposed as they barely beat a terrible Nevada team and lost to a mediocre BYU team at home. SMU now has to play TCU, FSU, #19 Louisville. They end the season by hosting Cal.
Cal '25 4-star commit Jae'on Young from Sierra Canyon had a mixed day against Bosco and it's c/o '26 WR Madden Williams. William had 10 catches for 252 yards and 3 TDs. Young had 3 PBU, 1 FF, and 1 INT. Young was one of the DBs covering Williams, but he only allowed one of the TDs. Meanwhile, Young forced Williams to fumble and also was covering him when he got a pick 6. Iron strengthens iron. Williams has 29 offers, including one from Cal.
BERKELEY – California volleyball has four more games on the road this week, first heading a short jaunt away to Moraga to face Saint Mary's (Calif.) on Tuesday night before traveling to Boulder, Colorado, for the Buffs Invitational to conclude 2024 tournament play. All four contests will be broadcast on ESPN+.
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – In Sofie Aagaard's first round as head coach of the California women's golf program Monday at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, the Golden Bears carded a 3-over-par 291 as a team, tying their best season-opening round score in the last five years.
BERKELEY – Seven home games at Haas Pavilion and marquee road/neutral matchups against Vanderbilt, USC, Missouri and San Diego State highlight the California men's basketball program's 2024-25 nonconference schedule.
A transformational gift in support of Cal Golf is setting a new course for the sport and providing a model for philanthropic engagement at a pivotal moment for Cal Athletics. Wow, this is huge- thank you donor!! I especially appreciate the gift covers both men and women’s programs. I hope one by one all of our non-revenue sports can become fully endowed to avoid chopping block situations.
BERKELEY – Teddye Buchanan (Linebacker of the Week) and Nohl Williams (Defensive Back of the Week) both earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in Cal's road victory at Auburn the conference announced on Monday.

Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season.
The Bears have only put together more than three consecutive winning seasons four times since the permanent switch to football in 1915. There were eight in a row under Andy Smith from 1918-1925, four in a row under Stub Allison from 1935-1938 six consecutive under Pappy Waldorf from 1947-1952 and Jeff Tedford’s eight-year run from 2002-2009. (Subtext: the Bears are due for a nice long run.)
I think we're at an inflection point this and next season. We have an easy schedule this year and an even easier schedule next season (@OSU, Minnesota, @SDSU, @BC, Duke, UNC, SMU, UVA, @L'ville, @Furd, @ Va Tech; we don't play Miami, FSU, or Clemson). We play Clemson in 2026, but the ACC schedule is much easier than the Pac-12. We should have three winning seasons in a row starting this year, which then should start paying dividends on recruiting, ticket sales, and viewership. If we fail now, we may never do well.
The missus and I are always looking around for a good sitcom (they are quite rare) and believe we found one with English Teacher which we watch on Hulu though it is also on FX. Early days (only two episodes) but clever writing, mostly good cast, timely issues and most important, funny.
TIME ZONES
States with more than one Time Zone (see https://www.time.gov )
Pacific and Mountain Time Zones - Idaho, Oregon
Mountain and Central Time Zones - North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas
Central and Eastern Time Zones - Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida
ALSO: Arizona is technically entirely within the Mountain Time Zone. However, the Navajo Nation observes DST while the rest of Arizona does not.
States that do NOT observe Daylight Saving Time - Arizona and Hawaii.
US Territories that do NOT observe Daylight Saving Time - Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Greenland standard time (the big chunk of Greenland) just started observing daylight savings in March 2023, which is odd because two thirds of it has perpetual sun during summer.

Indiana is one of those weird time zone states where some if it is on ET and some is on CT. They also didn't do Daylight Savings for a while, I think.
I didn't know Indiana was in both time zones. I've only been to the areas within a couple of hours from Chicago and always thought all of Indiana was in central.
most of IN is in EST .. no daylight savings.
so it could have seemed to be all central when you were there.
That's interesting.
I just looked up and where I went was barely in CT but wow it's just that corner.
i take it back .. IN does use DST
> Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been used since 2006.
i left in 2000!
By the way, there is a two-part episode of The West Wing (20 Hours in America, S4E1 and S4E2) in which the time zone split in Indiana plays a part.
This is kind of curious in light of the long time coach being fired earlier this summer. It’s good news but I wonder what’s going on.
I wonder if that was a condition on getting the money? I hope not, but it sure seems that way.
How would one counter such an assertion? Especially in the face of ongoing silence on the circumstances for the firing?
I guess that's why Cal has a PR firm.
