Eliminated. (Giants lose to the O's 5-3 on a walkoff HR)

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2024/9/19/24249547/mlb-final-giants-orioles-9-19-2024-recap-ryan-walker-anthony-santander-eliminated

The San Francisco Giants have been officially eliminated from the 2024 postseason after Anthony Santander’s walk-off homer secured Baltimore’s 5-3 win on Thursday afternoon.

Math has now made what we’ve all felt in our heart of hearts for sometime now a fact. For a lot of the right-brain intuitive emotive types who FEEEL this team—this already happened at any number of pit stops and pitfalls while traveling on this season’s long road. Hope died with the Giants’ four-game losing streak against Miami and Arizona; or the Mariners’ 6-consecutive singles off Tyler Rogers; or dropping the first two games after the All-Star Break in Colorado; or the fact that they finished before the break with a sub-.500 record, or when Willie Mays passed, or when Jung Hoo Lee dislocated his shoulder.

Giants ownership has made no secret of the fact that they are more interested in saving money, maximizing profit and SoMA real estate while giving the illusion of contending, so I fully expect Farhan’s useless ass to return next season, despite rumblings of a front office shakeup.

They can not be viewed as serious contenders until he is gone, unfortunately.

Dodgers clinch postseason berth as Shohei Ohtani reaches the 50/50 club

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/9/19/24249286/dodgers-marlins-game-recap

For the twelfth consecutive season, the Dodgers are heading to the postseason, as they used an utterly historic performance from Shohei Ohtani to complete a series win over the Miami Marlins by a final score of 20-4.

The Dodgers are now the fourth team in baseball to officially clinch a postseason spot, with the Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, and the Cleveland Guardians being the only other teams to have clinched a postseason berth.

That Shohei guy is pretty good at baseball. 3HR, 2 SB, 10 RBIs. I hope gets recognized for his efforts. /s

Such an amazing performance. Once of the broadcasters referenced last night "if" Shohei makes it to the Hall. Um, no ifs. His name is going to be everywhere at Cooperstown.

Yeah, not sure how he can be an IF. Should he win MVP this year, which he probably should though there will be some that vote for Lindor because he also plays D, he'll be the 2nd to win MVPs in both leagues. If he comes back and pitches well, he should be a first ballot HOF. Not too many of those right now.

Just maybe he's worth his $2mil/year contract.

Credit Cards

Expand full comment

Ugh. Someone stole my credit card number. Chase Sapphire was good about making sure that all of the bad charges were not my responsibility. This seems to happen fairly frequently, so we already have a list of all the accounts that need to be updated - which is an inconvenience for sure. However, I learned today that if somebody has your credit card number in their e-Wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay), Chase will automatically update your new credit card number into the wallet - so you have to work with Chase to kick out members who have your card in their wallet to stop them from getting your new number. That seems like a stupid security flaw.

Expand full comment

Before banks automatically updated wallets, not automatically updating them was one of the most common complaints. The consumer is impossible to satisfy.

Expand full comment

Sorry to hear that!

I know that Apple Card doesn't have all the bells-and-whistles, but there are no numbers on the physical card (including the 3-digit code). And if it's stolen, you just go in the app and get a new one...no waiting. And you can set it to update the code every xx days/uses (I forget which).

To me – having had cards frozen (while on vacation), abused (by not me), had to wait for new physical card – that's been the most-important feature. Plus I can pay the bill on iPhone super easily, which makes up for the (at least) once/year that I'd forget and get dinged for a $35 late fee (plus interest).

Expand full comment

Pretty much everyone now issues new cards digitally, so you don't have to wait for the physical card.

On the positive side, one of the perps was stupid enough to put their name on an order at a Yoga Studio. I tracked down who they were and worked with the vendor to get a police investigation started in Fort Worth. They were totally small scale, using my card to do ride share in Dallas, buy $380 worth of crap at Sam's Club Online, ordered Insomnia cookies in Dallas, and get a yoga membership. If you're gonna be a crook, be at least a better crook than that.

Once I bought something at Dick's Sporting Goods and they said their reader wasn't working so they used one of those old fashioned manual CC machines. Youngins don't know what I'm talking about. Anyways, someone ordered a shit ton of shoes that were, I think, delivered to some address in Indiana. I don't remember how I got the mailing address. Anyways, I called the cops in that city and they weren't interested in investigating, even though I had the address. I think I also talked to Dick's but they weren't interested in doing anything either.

I did get my money refunded so I didn't push it any further.

The last time this happened, a gang in India ordered $10,000 of video games, video game credits, and pizzas in India all within 24 hours. I can respect that.

I've noticed that places where I use my CC to pay my bill automatically get updated on a CC number change.

same. I have had to change numbers in the last years on account and vendors with whom I have recurring charges were cleared automatically.

The Bear Season 1 [HULU]. 17/19 WB. Really well written and the acting was good. I assume this is what kitchens are like at restaurants. Maybe not at a sandwich counter, but Carmy and Sydney both came from chef schools so it makes sense they're going to run it this way.

Also they have High Fidelity (from 2020) with Zoe Kravitz as Rob (she goes by that in the show). A lot of scene-by-scene redos – like the early American Office – but still enjoyable. Also interesting that her mom was one of the Top Five Heartbreaks in the movie...

Watched the first episode of Have I Got News For You. It's got Roy Wood Jr, Amber Ruffin, and I think 3 other guest stars. I think it's on CNN Sat nights(?). Basically they have stories and each of the comedians make comments about it. After 1 episode it's pretty good.

Kinda similar to After Midnight which I watched for a couple of weeks but couldn't keep going with it.
