Excellent. We need every advantage we can against UW's lethal passing game

heyalumnigo's avatar

Good thing the game isn't being played today. It's supposed to be about 72.

We're getting about 3 inches of rain over the weekend and some 20mph winds on Saturday. Great weather to sit at home and watch college football

I hope I can get to the farmer's market Saturday morning, but after that I expect I'll be doing the same.

People are shocked - shocked, I tell ya - that a tech CEO who graduated high school at 16, Harvard Law at 19 and seemed to lack social skills - has been accused of sexual harassment and really odd behavior. He has resigned, forfeiting 110m in compensation

49ers did what previously seemed inevitable - won 30-12 with strong defense against an overmatched QB without the star RB. Rookie Ronnie Bell caught a beautiful TD on his first career target, starting in place of injured Aiyuk. 49ers has the yardage advantage 441-150 as the blitz-happy Giants couldn't throw Purdy completely off his game

Go Bears! Who was that between Luck and Sherman? A little surprised McAfee got so close.

GoldenSD81's avatar

That wasn’t McAfee, that was Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I was surprised he got so close as well. I wonder what the list of players who he played with.

rocksanddirt's avatar

I think there was a guy who was supposed to block him, but airballed it.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Nick Bosa is better than Joey Bosa. I think it is due to Nick being more MAGA than Joey.

I spent most of this game thinking Purdy looked off and then at the end he has 310 yards and 2 TDs.

at some point I'll need to do an audit of how much I'm actually spending on all this nonsense plus cable (the cable is for live sports, almost all viewing by my wife and daughters is streaming at this point)

rocksanddirt's avatar

We have cut way back on streaming, don't pay for cable. If need by can always run up the Jolly Roger and pirate stuff.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I feel like I need to do the same. Fortunately I don’t have cable so I don’t feel as bad.

Also, T-Mobile pays something like $15 towards my Netflix and I am already an Amazon Prime subscriber so I’m not sure how that impacts the Amazon Prime streaming in terms of what I pay.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

If you have Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime, & Peacock, you’re already up around $100.

DC Trojan's avatar

we have cable, I get Max as part of my AT&T mobile plan, I got peacock on a discount for the soccer, bundled ESPN+ and Hulu and Disney, and I'm about to stop paying for Britbox (in part because I'm going to pay for my daughter to get a BBC license in the UK and VPN the hell out of that connection.) Also Paramount. And Netflix. JFC I need to prune this back.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Those are exactly what I have and AppleTV. I pay for the Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle. I pay about $5 a month for Netflix, Peacock I got on a Black Friday deal last year.

If I were to cut any of them, it would probably be Netflix as that’s the one I use the least.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yes but what is the alternative? I suppose it will just be over the antenna.

DC Trojan's avatar

I guess I could go to the library and peruse their selection of DVDs

How bad is education in some places in America? Let's take Baltimore city for example. There are 32 high schools there, not including the one in Juvenile Hall. Of those, 13 schools had zero students pass math proficiency. And on a 1-4 scale, 75% of those students got a 1. Of the 5 best schools, only 11% of students passed (3 or higher) and no student got a 4.

https://foxbaltimore.com/news/project-baltimore/at-13-baltimore-city-high-schools-zero-students-tested-proficient-on-2023-state-math-exam#

Berkelium97's avatar

To be fair, this is Sinclair Broadcasting's flagship station that is constantly using any issue in schools (violence, poor test scores, issues with school bus schedules) to push school choice. They are blatantly anti-Baltimore City government and constantly air biased stories trying to undermine officials and their policies.

That said, Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program's math proficiency scores have dropped to 7% in Baltimore (for reference, the MD-wide rate is 20%), as they have across the state due to two years of schooling interrupted by the pandemic. Scores are starting to recover, however, and Baltimore City students are closing the gap with MD in most subjects.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Sinclair stations are basically local Fox News/Newsmax. I hate that they are quietly taking over local news stations.

dcblue's avatar

Awhile back they bought the local ABC affiliate. I've been pleasantly surprised I haven't noticed a change in news coverage.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Same thing happened with our local Fox News station. It was bought by Sinclair about 2 years ago but I haven’t noticed a change in its news coverage.

Berkelium97's avatar

You two are lucky. Our Sinclair station is Fox News local--all bluster and fury about wildly blown-out-of-proportion issues. It's pretty comical comparing their local coverage to the normal stations.

On this day in 1979 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated San Jose State, 13-10. Rich Campbell hit Matt Bouza with a ten-yard touchdown pass 47 seconds before the final whistle to win the game. On the day Bouza caught 11 passes for 135 yards. The victory raised Cal’s overall record to 3-0 en route to a Garden State Bowl appearance in Roger Theder’s second year as head coach.

DBD celebrates 100 years of football in Strawberry Canyon with this daily feature appearing throughout the football season.

SGBear's avatar

I remember that game. Cal has smashed the Spartans two years before and I was too young to remember or attend previous games that were much closer. So, in my mind SJSU was just a cupcake and that game ended up being a wake-up call that SJSU was not a gimme victory. Apropos, San Jose State went on to win the next four of the next seven games versus Cal.

Oski Disciple's avatar

What do people think is the more likely outcome tomorrow in Seattle. A total Cal blowout victory 56-7. A solid beating of the Huskies that's over by the middle of the third quarter, 38-21. Or do you think we won't put it away until a late FG or TD, 30-20? I'd be happy with anyone of these.

sycasey's avatar

I just think that Wilcox's defenses tend to keep these games low-scoring so Cal can probably beat the (very high) spread. I don't have much hope of Cal winning.

But if we do win, it would be super close.

GoldenSD81's avatar

If it comes down to us making a FG, in the rain or even sunshine, we lose.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I would be shocked if any of these happened and Cal walked out with a win. I am expecting a close first half before UW pulls away in the 2nd for a comfortable 17 point victory.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I expect UW to Milton Berle it, like last year. Just pull enough out of the playbook to win in a nice, workmanlike, 2-score fashion.

Penix is twice the QB Jake Browning was. Incidentally, Browning may start for Cincy on MNF

Cugel's avatar

So... didn't move for a LONG time, finally bought a house instead on "renting" a unit in a 100,000 sf building, I got 6 boxes of books to get rid of - not all bad, but, well we should get rid of quite a few = lots of room on the last bookcase I put up to ad new ones.

But one incredible dumb thing I'm keeping - because it is SUPER dumb - a desk pad with TNG - centered with the Capt. Picard which is only image to change from "Good - Make it So!" to "Bad - Resistance is Futile" But #1 + android, Klingon & singer DON'T change at all - it's so, so, SO silly.

Concord Costco was 5.09 two days ago.

Berkelium97's avatar

I think it was around $3.85 for 93 when I last filled up a couple weeks ago. No idea what 89 was (or who actually uses it). Regular was probably $3.10ish

SGBear's avatar

Fair point. I meant 87 octane, but I'm wildly out of touch with the common people. Like one banana. What could it cost?

DC Trojan's avatar

I'd have guessed 3-something, we pay a little more per gallon for living in a higher-commercial-rent area. (I haven't had to put gas in the Civic for several weeks and I have no idea what I paid when I last fueled up the minivan)

SGBear's avatar

$3.29/gallon

or about $29.61/firkin

FiatSlug's avatar

I was a passenger in a car headed to Alameda via Adeline St and 5th St in Oakland. Stopped at light I observed that diesel prices posted for $6.199/gal. if you paid cash, $6.299/gal. if you charged it.

There's some gouging going on.

rocksanddirt's avatar

I think $5.10/gal last week.

Cugel's avatar

That's super near what I pay in Oakland for 91 - after looking around.

Justbear's avatar

87 is $6.10 at the Chevron closest gas station from my house in Irvine

SGBear's avatar

$6.10? I could buy two orders of fried gizzards, a 128 ounce cup of sweet tea, and two rounds of 5.56 x 72 grain ammo at the same gas station for that.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Costco: $5.50

Non Costco: $5.70

FiatSlug's avatar

$5.29/gal at Costco Richmond

$5.69/gal at Chevron close to home (Berkeley)
