Why Ian's effects are so catastrophic

https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/09/as-a-meteorologist-hurricane-ian-is-the-nightmare-storm-i-worry-about-most/

As a forecaster you worry about three primary threats from hurricanes—strong winds, storm surge, and inland rainfall.

Usually a hurricane brings one or two of these threats to a region, but not typically all three. For example, in the Houston region during my lifetime here, we have seen extreme rainfall from Hurricane Harvey, in 2017, and a powerful storm surge from Hurricane Ike in 2008. But Harvey didn't really bring serious wind or surge into the Houston area, and while Ike had some damaging winds, most of the city did not see hurricane-force conditions.

Ian is a monster that will bring all three threats into Southwest Florida with devastating effect.

The National Hurricane Center now forecasts a storm surge of 12 to 16 feet from Englewood to Bonita Beach, Florida. The large wind field associated with Ian will destroy structures along the Western Florida coast and likely knock electricity offline to one-half or possibly two-thirds of the state. Because Ian is moving slowly, and expected to slow further as its steering currents weaken, it will deluge the state. Nearly the entire Florida peninsula is at risk for flash flooding, with a large chunk of the middle of the state, including Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and the Space Coast, at a "high" risk of flash flooding.

Giants make you feel better about things, win

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2022/9/28/23377955/giants-rockies-recap-shelby-miller-joc-pederson-sean-hjelle

The San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Wednesday night. I could talk about the game a bit, and in a roundabout way, I will. I could talk about how the Giants have now won eight of their last nine games, but I don’t know how many more words I can say on that. Doesn’t really need expanding.

Here’s what I actually want to talk about: 2023. Because, despite technically having a case of the Still In This Things, the Giants are playing for 2023. They’re playing to figure some things out.

One of those things to figure out is the bullpen, which struggled for much of this season. But a funny thing happened to the bullpen: as the Giants shuffled through things, DFA’ing disappointing players like Jake McGee and José Álvarez, and optioning subpar performers like Sam Long and Zack Littell, they started to find the buttons that worked.

Dodgers break record behind Urias’ dominant performance

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/9/28/23378150/dodgers-break-record-urias-dominant-performance

They’ve done it folks. The 2022 Dodgers have put together the strongest regular season in franchise history, winning their 107th game of the regular season. Behind yet another dominant performance from Julio Urias, the Dodgers escaped with a 1-0 extra-inning victory.

There was one very common theme in this game; the Dodgers struggled mightily with runners in scoring position, and it began in the very first inning. Mookie Betts led off the game with a double before advancing to third base on an error and found himself stuck on third with two outs and the bases loaded after walks to Freddie Freeman and Max Muncy. Joe Musgrove struck out Joey Gallo to escape the early jam. Three runners stranded.

After stranding two more runners in the second, the Dodgers next best opportunity to get on the scoreboard came in the fifth inning. Mookie led off the inning with his second hit of the game, and once again, with two outs and the bases loaded following a walk to Freeman and a Muncy hit by pitch, Gallo found himself at the plate with the bases loaded.

Terence's avatar

Are Gallo and Kimbrel going to make the postseason roster?

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

If Kimbrel does, it'll be in a non-high leverage situation.

Gallo still plays good D but man he strikes out a lot. Which is what he did with the Yankees. Without Gallo, the OFs are Klay's brother, CT3, Bellinger, and Betts. IF are JT, TT, Muncy, FF, Lux, Hanser. Will Smith and Barnes catching. so that's 12 which I think leaves one more spot. Not sure there is another position player they'd bring up to replace him.

Expand full comment
Terence's avatar

Looks like they're trying to see if Vargas can make the move in the last week. I guess it's his offense vs Gallo's defense and experience.

Starters: Urias, Kershaw .. . Anderson and maybe Heany or May?

Bullpen: Chris Martin R, Graterol R (Set-up), Vesia L (Closer?), Phillips R, Kahnle R, Phillips R, Price L (Long), Almonte R

So remaining spot would be Kimbrel Grove or Ferguson and Ferguson's another leftie.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

You have Phillips twice.

I don't think they'll do a "defined" closer. They'll have Philips be the most high leverage situation, then match up and work from there.

I think Heaney could end up being a long man out of the bullpen.

Even though Ferguson struggled his last couple, I think he'll be there.

Don't think May will be ready.

Maybe piggyback Gonsolin and Heaney, if Catman is ready.

Vesia can pitch effectively to both R and L so I think they don't care as much about handedness with him.

I don't think Treinan will be in the NLDS.

Which probably means Kimbrel is there because I don't think they bring up Grove or Peipot.

It happened. Pretending history didn't happen doesn't change history. They were hitting against pitchers, some of whom were also using the same stuff.

Had they been available in other eras, many would have taken advantage of them, and also gotten different results.

Many other devices, substances, training and treatment products and regimens have come along at various points, and they were taken advantage of to improve results.

At the same time, we have had walls moved and their height changed, the ball altered multiple times, all usually to combat whatever aspect of the game was dominant at the time. As a result of all this, of course stats are not totally comparable. Baseball in particular has an irrational fixation with numbers that don't mean what they wish they did, other than relative to other numbers from the same era.
