She's my brother's cat, and his girlfriend gets up early, so I don't have to deal with her schedule too much. It's more that she (the cat) likes to bite me, swat at me, and sit outside my room waiting to pounce.
My mom’s relatives all have dogs because they are hunters - it us pretty cool to see them in action sniffing out birds and pointing and such. I like them well enough but with three human dependents I have no interest in expanding the number of living things depending on my care.
My only day to day interaction with dogs is that they frequently take shits on my lawn and my kids step in it.
Mrs Slug and I are dog people. Mrs Slug's experience growing up is more dog oriented than mine. Her dad used dogs in hunting (Brittany Spaniels) and her mom's family had Boxers.
Growing up, I had two different dogs - Sam (Labrador Retriever) and Sadie (Beagle). Ralph (Cockapoo) came along after I had started college.
As a couple, we have had a Cocker Spaniel (Toby), Basset Hounds (Clara and Allison), a Boxer (Rocky), a Boston Terrier (Minnie), a Dachshund mix (Tigger) and a Terrier mix (Oliver). With the exception of Clara, all of the dogs that Mrs Slug and I have had as a couple were or are rescues.
My 1 year old is a Brittany....and the old girl checking out Sather Gate in my avatar is the 14.5 year old vizsla....both are incredibly sweet and beautiful dogs, who could probably behave themselves a little more, tho that's on me.
Newellbany is lucky to still have his flip flops after our TCU AirBnB, tho were they to be destroyed, that's on him......;-)
I am not a dog person and I feel like a lot of people all of a sudden have “support” dogs of all sizes that they take into stores where dogs do not belong.
I am a total dog person, and tho I think the "support animal" thing is way out of control, dogs of all sizes nonetheless belong in stores, PROVIDED they are well behaved. If grubby-ass, disease spreading kids can be in stores, a nicely groomed and well behaved pup should be as well.
While this is admittedly a minority opinion, kids are disgusting.
Oh dude, one funny thing about living in San Francisco with little kids (as I once did), is that you notice that people are WAY NICER to dogs than kids. A dog can drop a deuce in the middle of a restaurant and people will be like oh poochie, what kind of dog is that? If your kid makes a single noise, the whole restaurant stares daggers at you like you are the world’s biggest asshole failure of a parent.
I think my best quality as a parent is not giving a damn what other people think about my kids' behavior. (I have plenty of bad qualities too, but that one I'm proud of.)
I feel like all pets are indoor pets these days. We had a golden lab/retriever mix when I was growing up, and though he was a Very Good Dog he maybe set foot inside our house once in his entire lifetime. He had his own house, in the backyard where he belonged.

I can't remember which brand it was, but I do remember being on Guam in the late 80s when a typhoon hit and sitting of the balcony of the condo I was renting drinking a couple wine coolers and watching the storm go by.
Yeah. But they were fun. Just a bunch of high school kids at house parties drinking. Bottled wine was so expensive and sophisticated (and frankly, no one liked the taste). But wine coolers worked. Cheap and sweet.
We tried playing drinking games using wine coolers in lieu of beer a few times. Every single person threw up. After that, beer (and shots) were the only thing permitted at drinking games.
This makes me want to have a wine cooler, if for no other reason to see what they're like. I don't think I've had one as a grown-up and I'd be willing to entertain the notion that they might be refreshing, even if I'm sure they're too sweet for me.

I watched Swan Song on Apple TV+ over the weekend and I really liked it. Near future sci fi drama and slow burn. Great cast. It reminded me of a Black Mirror episode, due to its style and technology used in the movie was similar to other Black Mirror tech. I was expecting some sort of dark, black mirror twist the whole time.
I had an interesting conversation with my daughters who were saying that at some point, if their schools persist in having in-person classes but make students who test positive quarantine for 10 days, *without* having any accommodation, you're just screwing over kids at random instead of an equitably shitty remote school option. Both of them absolutely hated zoom school / college, so the fact that they're willing to contemplate it for both community spread and fairness is interesting to me.
I would've bet $$$ Saturday that I'd caught it...I had a sneezing fit in the late am, which as an allergy sufferer was only unusual in that I rattled off 7-8 in a 15 minute period. I started to feel chills & real achy, with a scratchy throat, and an uncontrollable runny nose...
I took the COVID test and it was negative...before bed I mixed an Emergen-Cee with an Airborne tablet in a pint glass and used it to wash down some Tylenol and a Benadryl, and woke up Sunday feeling fine....strange.
Not to scare you, but my mom tested negative, with coughing and runny nose, the same night after I tested positive. She called her PCP and he had her schedule a test a couple of days later through the hospital and it came back positive. Maybe wait a day or two and re-test.

Honestly? People who visit hospitals filled with COVID patients are likely to be exposed to it anyway. I'm not saying that's good, just that it's probably the least bad option to have people come to work when they're not actively sick (no symptoms).

I don't understand this point. Hospitals need people NOW, hence there have to be public-health tradeoffs. Yes, you can argue that there should have been better staffing in the first place, but that doesn't help the situation now.
Similarly, in San Mateo your kid is ok to go to school if asymptomatic even if others in household are positive. OTOH you have to take mandatory tests to go to school (and submit results to school) if any classmates have tested positive. 2 of my 3 kids had to get tested yesterday for that reason. I feel bad for the school principal, she is sending emails all hours of the night, on weekends, seems so overworked

Went to the doctor today to get some blood drawn for my annual physical. It's a relatively new practice location, so it's normally dead quiet. Today, I was there for 45 minutes and the phone was ringing off the hook - 100% of the calls were people trying to get Covid tests.
Starting to have schedule adjustments in the DC area because of staffing problems. Some of the Smithsonian museums have adjusted the times they're open. And most busses are now running on reduced Saturday schedules. Also, bus drivers can bypass someone waiting if not wearing a mask.
I visited my sister and her husband over New Year's. They have NBA TV through my nephew and are big into the Dubs. Good thing Klay is back because they we're really tired of announcers saying his return was imminent. We watched a few games while I was there and my sister stunned me with the foul language she used watching the games. She was really into it.

But he played well with his apparently injured hand, showing absolutely no ill effects despite his thumb “hanging by a tendon.” Good Jimmy outshined Bad Jimmy, tho both made plenty of appearances.

Well, the initial line is what it is, set by guys like Ace Rothstein from Casino, that know a thing or two about these teams...the 3 points is the slimmest margin of all the Wildcard round games, and means this game would basically be a pick 'em on a neutral field.
I think the Niners are a real tough matchup for Dallas...the Cardinals just housed the Cowboys at AT&T behind the running game and defensive pressure, which the Niners do better than anyone in football.
I think SF controls the line of scrimmage, and runs all day long on Dallas, and forces some turnovers. But other than a rematch with the Rams, Dallas was the next best option, as there's no way Garoppolo would outduel Brady, and Kingsbury (inexplicably) owns Shanahan.
That said, the Niners could get blown out the following week at Lambeau...I'm rooting hard for a Philly upset in Tampa.
Worth noting the Niners also played GB close earlier this season, so I wouldn't say they're hopeless in that potential matchup either. Of course, that game was in Santa Clara and playing at Lambeau is another matter.
I would say the first pick wasn't terrible. He got hit as he threw, so the ball sailed.
Second pick was bad. Yes, Ramsey had to make a great catch, and yes Jimmy did get roughed after the pass and it should have been flagged (based on current rules). But he had time to make the throw and it was way behind Kittle. A good throw might have been a TD.
Well, the common denominator in most of Garoppolo's picks is the decision itself...he locks in on guys way too often and throws into double & triple coverage...the hit to the head that should've been called doesn't change the decision to throw into triple coverage itself, in both instances. And agreed, he was hit on the first duck, but again, the intended target was triple teamed.
That said, tho I can't wait for the Garoppolo era in San Francisco to come to an end, I DO tip my cap to him for the two drives yesterday - the one to tie it and the FG drive. Good Jimmy!
I'm not sure I can even judge "triple teamed" on the first INT, since him getting hit caused the ball to sail well off target. Who was he even trying to hit on that throw? I don't know.
The other thing is that a lot of this offense with Jimmy G is based on timing throws that are fit into tight windows, intending to split the zones. When it works well it looks beautiful -- think of those seam passes that hit Deebo or Aiyuk or Kittle in stride and they take off for a bunch of extra yards after catch. Those are the timing throws. Yes, there are multiple defenders around the receiver, but if you hit that throw on time you can get big gains.
On that second INT, it looked like Kittle was coming open if the throw had been on target. The inside defender wouldn't have been able to reach it in time, and I would trust Kittle to win a 50/50 ball in the air anyway. The problem is that the throw was way behind him, which allowed the trailing defender (Ramsay) to get a hand on it where Kittle couldn't. And yes, that's on Jimmy. The decision isn't bad if the throw is accurate, but we've seen this with him where his accuracy is not consistent and it results in these kinds of bad picks. Tom Brady makes the same throws but he's more consistently accurate.
Well, that's fair...but the main criticism of Jimmy G is that in addition to being inconsistent with his accuracy, he's basically a one read QB that pre-determines where he's going with the football before the ball is snapped...part of this is his lack of mobility, and helps to explain why he gets the ball out so quickly.
The nuances of the QB position do escape him - Brady is more consistently accurate, but ALSO processes the game much quicker and better than Garoppolo (no surprise - TB12's the greatest), who rarely works through his progressions. Brady gets to 2nd and 3rd reads far more than Garoppolo, who rarely does.
I’m skeptical Garoppolo is as injured as his camp would like you to believe, and think that thumb injury was more damage control after he schitt the bed in Tennessee on national tv. Remember, he’s due $27M next year if he’s traded...he probably won’t get anything close to that if he’s simply released.

They should have the last week of the season play all at once, like in the World Cup how the last games for each group are played simultaneously. Maybe play the whole AFC at 4pm ET on Saturday and then do the NFC at 4pm on Sunday. That way, you'd minimize the chance of teams sandbagging.
I really don't think NFL teams actually do sandbag - why would the Lions even want to win if that were the case? Or Jacksonville? Runs against their ethos.
I think one reason you don’t see it is a lot of player contracts are tied to incentives so while they game might not mean much in terms of playoffs, it could mean something financially for the players.
Maybe, but I think the main reason is that it's such a macho, physical and violent game that you view the results as a test of your manhood, or something like that.
My son was all in on the conspiracy theory that the teams would play for a tie - I seriously doubted that, and the teams didn't play like that at all. Fantastically fun game Chargers made 4 4th downs in a row to tie it up.
In OT I think the Chargers were playing for the tie. Not calling TO to stop the clock, except on the last play before the FG. This article makes a good point that the Raiders wanted to win so they wouldn't have to meet the Chiefs. They played it such that the Chargers would never get the ball back. If they hadn't gained 10 yards on the play after the TO, they probably would've kneeled it instead of kicking a 55+ yard FG and possibly having a block returned for a TD or a long, missed FG returned for a TD.
Didn't look that way to me on their drive that ended in the FG, sure when the Raiders had the ball, they might have been HOPING for a tie, but that's not the same thing as PLAYing for a tie.
I think they still attempt the FG even if they didn’t gain another yard. Carson has the leg to kick that distance so the odds of him kicking short and it being returned is low, same with it being blocked.
I was also hoping for the tie but I understand the TO and thought it was the right call. The problem is the Chargers run defense is terrible and I’m sure the defense was tired.

Well the Raiders were already in long FG range. If they didn’t gain another yard it would have been a 57 yard attempt, Carlson has been money all season long and has hit from 56 so I think, other than a penalty or a tackle for a loss the Raiders were going to attempt the FG. The long run just made it an easier attempt.
I think on a 55+ yard field goal you think about the bad things that can happen. The kicker has to get more distance so might try to kick it lower, higher chance of a block, etc. Might not be worth it to kick, when a tie game is perfectly fine for you.
Get it inside 50 yards and it's a more normal kick so you just do it.

I think you have to assume the chances of winning in OT are roughly 50/50 (without knowing the result of the coin toss). The chances of scoring on any given 2 point conversion are lower than that. So in terms of analytics that decision is probably a wash, maybe even slightly favoring the PAT.
I think it'll go longer than that. UCSC wanted students to try to get back by this weekend with online classes going until this coming Friday. With students coming back they had more positives so they went virtual until 1/31. I think they'll see a higher spike and be virtual past 1/31. I guess they're hoping students that stay home get it so they won't get positive later?

Mrs Slug and I are dog people. Mrs Slug's experience growing up is more dog oriented than mine. Her dad used dogs in hunting (Brittany Spaniels) and her mom's family had Boxers.
Growing up, I had two different dogs - Sam (Labrador Retriever) and Sadie (Beagle). Ralph (Cockapoo) came along after I had started college.
As a couple, we have had a Cocker Spaniel (Toby), Basset Hounds (Clara and Allison), a Boxer (Rocky), a Boston Terrier (Minnie), a Dachshund mix (Tigger) and a Terrier mix (Oliver). With the exception of Clara, all of the dogs that Mrs Slug and I have had as a couple were or are rescues.
My 1 year old is a Brittany....and the old girl checking out Sather Gate in my avatar is the 14.5 year old vizsla....both are incredibly sweet and beautiful dogs, who could probably behave themselves a little more, tho that's on me.
Newellbany is lucky to still have his flip flops after our TCU AirBnB, tho were they to be destroyed, that's on him......;-)

I am not a dog person and I feel like a lot of people all of a sudden have “support” dogs of all sizes that they take into stores where dogs do not belong.
I am a total dog person, and tho I think the "support animal" thing is way out of control, dogs of all sizes nonetheless belong in stores, PROVIDED they are well behaved. If grubby-ass, disease spreading kids can be in stores, a nicely groomed and well behaved pup should be as well.
While this is admittedly a minority opinion, kids are disgusting.

Oh dude, one funny thing about living in San Francisco with little kids (as I once did), is that you notice that people are WAY NICER to dogs than kids. A dog can drop a deuce in the middle of a restaurant and people will be like oh poochie, what kind of dog is that? If your kid makes a single noise, the whole restaurant stares daggers at you like you are the world’s biggest asshole failure of a parent.
I think my best quality as a parent is not giving a damn what other people think about my kids' behavior. (I have plenty of bad qualities too, but that one I'm proud of.)

I feel like all pets are indoor pets these days. We had a golden lab/retriever mix when I was growing up, and though he was a Very Good Dog he maybe set foot inside our house once in his entire lifetime. He had his own house, in the backyard where he belonged.
That's because by and large, humans suck.
Your average human is an a$$hole, whereas your average dog is a devoted creature that provides unconditional love.
This is also the same generation that went from allowing their kids to walk to school to shuttling them to school and everywhere else.

I had no idea until recently the Japanese portions of the movie were scripted by Kurosawa - I watched Stray Dog recently. It's really good, but also you can see its quite early in Kurosawa's career - a lot of his ideas and techniques are still quite raw compared to something like High and Low or Sanjuro.

She was the one that escaped and killed one teen and wounded two others - one of which admitted being drunk and provoking the tiger while standing atop the wall of her enclosure. When my twins were a little under a year old I had one in the carrier and we went into the lion house at the SF Zoo. She had been asleep but then she peeked and saw the lion about 50 feet from us. Her eyes got so big. It is kind of elemental - the fear you feel upon seeing a predator like that.
They scare the crap out of me. I mean, not when they're behind an inescapable wall, but in the wild. Tigers, rhinos, hippos, and crocs scare me. The last three because they'll attack anything. But Tigers because they're pure raw predatory power.

While in Tampa I visited Carol Baskin's place (before the show existed). There was a tiger that had extreme urinary range and loved targeting tour groups.
So now I have 2 reasons to fear tigers.
While not the same size but I have a fear of running into a mountain Lion or being stalked by one when hiking in remote areas or less frequented trails.
I think rhinos are pretty timid. Saw one in the wild in northern India (and a tiger too). That thing went and hid as fast as it could.

I watched Swan Song on Apple TV+ over the weekend and I really liked it. Near future sci fi drama and slow burn. Great cast. It reminded me of a Black Mirror episode, due to its style and technology used in the movie was similar to other Black Mirror tech. I was expecting some sort of dark, black mirror twist the whole time.
I recommend giving it a watch.

I had an interesting conversation with my daughters who were saying that at some point, if their schools persist in having in-person classes but make students who test positive quarantine for 10 days, *without* having any accommodation, you're just screwing over kids at random instead of an equitably shitty remote school option. Both of them absolutely hated zoom school / college, so the fact that they're willing to contemplate it for both community spread and fairness is interesting to me.

I would've bet $$$ Saturday that I'd caught it...I had a sneezing fit in the late am, which as an allergy sufferer was only unusual in that I rattled off 7-8 in a 15 minute period. I started to feel chills & real achy, with a scratchy throat, and an uncontrollable runny nose...
I took the COVID test and it was negative...before bed I mixed an Emergen-Cee with an Airborne tablet in a pint glass and used it to wash down some Tylenol and a Benadryl, and woke up Sunday feeling fine....strange.
Not to scare you, but my mom tested negative, with coughing and runny nose, the same night after I tested positive. She called her PCP and he had her schedule a test a couple of days later through the hospital and it came back positive. Maybe wait a day or two and re-test.
When I had my nasty infection, I scheduled rapid tests two days apart.
My brother's girlfriend is a preschool director, and they're doing Zoom school this week.

Honestly? People who visit hospitals filled with COVID patients are likely to be exposed to it anyway. I'm not saying that's good, just that it's probably the least bad option to have people come to work when they're not actively sick (no symptoms).

I don't understand this point. Hospitals need people NOW, hence there have to be public-health tradeoffs. Yes, you can argue that there should have been better staffing in the first place, but that doesn't help the situation now.
Similarly, in San Mateo your kid is ok to go to school if asymptomatic even if others in household are positive. OTOH you have to take mandatory tests to go to school (and submit results to school) if any classmates have tested positive. 2 of my 3 kids had to get tested yesterday for that reason. I feel bad for the school principal, she is sending emails all hours of the night, on weekends, seems so overworked
It's been a real nightmare in some schools. Thankfully my kid's school has managed to stay open and operational, but I know other places have big issues.
Went to the doctor today to get some blood drawn for my annual physical. It's a relatively new practice location, so it's normally dead quiet. Today, I was there for 45 minutes and the phone was ringing off the hook - 100% of the calls were people trying to get Covid tests.

Starting to have schedule adjustments in the DC area because of staffing problems. Some of the Smithsonian museums have adjusted the times they're open. And most busses are now running on reduced Saturday schedules. Also, bus drivers can bypass someone waiting if not wearing a mask.

I visited my sister and her husband over New Year's. They have NBA TV through my nephew and are big into the Dubs. But he played well with his apparently injured hand, showing absolutely no ill effects despite his thumb “hanging by a tendon.” Good Jimmy outshined Bad Jimmy, tho both made plenty of appearances.

Vegas is just reflecting the mood of the betting public. Or, in this case, Vegas is punting because favoring the Cowboys by 3 at home is the same as saying, "We rate the two teams to be about equal but home field advantage belongs to the Cowboys."
Which is a nice way of saying, "We have no idea who should be favored. Tell us, O Great Betting Public, so we can appropriately adjust the line."
Theoretically the Cowboys should be better and have the better QB and should win, but Dak and their offense have looked shaky lately.
The Niners secondary will have their hands full, but their D-line is dominating games right now. Plus, Dallas is middle of the road v. the rush, and that'll allow the Niners to eat some clock, and keep that erratic Cowboys O off the field.
Plus, Shanahan was OC on Dan Quinn's Super Bowl team in Atlanta....he went up against that defense every day in practice. He'll find some wrinkles.

Well, the initial line is what it is, set by guys like Ace Rothstein from Casino, that know a thing or two about these teams...the 3 points is the slimmest margin of all the Wildcard round games, and means this game would basically be a pick 'em on a neutral field.
I think the Niners are a real tough matchup for Dallas...the Cardinals just housed the Cowboys at AT&T behind the running game and defensive pressure, which the Niners do better than anyone in football.
I think SF controls the line of scrimmage, and runs all day long on Dallas, and forces some turnovers. But other than a rematch with the Rams, Dallas was the next best option, as there's no way Garoppolo would outduel Brady, and Kingsbury (inexplicably) owns Shanahan.
That said, the Niners could get blown out the following week at Lambeau...I'm rooting hard for a Philly upset in Tampa.
Worth noting the Niners also played GB close earlier this season, so I wouldn't say they're hopeless in that potential matchup either. Of course, that game was in Santa Clara and playing at Lambeau is another matter.

I would say the first pick wasn't terrible. He got hit as he threw, so the ball sailed.
Second pick was bad. Yes, Ramsey had to make a great catch, and yes Jimmy did get roughed after the pass and it should have been flagged (based on current rules). But he had time to make the throw and it was way behind Kittle. A good throw might have been a TD.
Well, the common denominator in most of Garoppolo's picks is the decision itself...he locks in on guys way too often and throws into double & triple coverage...the hit to the head that should've been called doesn't change the decision to throw into triple coverage itself, in both instances. And agreed, he was hit on the first duck, but again, the intended target was triple teamed.
That said, tho I can't wait for the Garoppolo era in San Francisco to come to an end, I DO tip my cap to him for the two drives yesterday - the one to tie it and the FG drive. Good Jimmy!

I'm not sure I can even judge "triple teamed" on the first INT, since him getting hit caused the ball to sail well off target. Who was he even trying to hit on that throw? I don't know.
The other thing is that a lot of this offense with Jimmy G is based on timing throws that are fit into tight windows, intending to split the zones. When it works well it looks beautiful -- think of those seam passes that hit Deebo or Aiyuk or Kittle in stride and they take off for a bunch of extra yards after catch. Those are the timing throws. Yes, there are multiple defenders around the receiver, but if you hit that throw on time you can get big gains.
On that second INT, it looked like Kittle was coming open if the throw had been on target. The inside defender wouldn't have been able to reach it in time, and I would trust Kittle to win a 50/50 ball in the air anyway. The problem is that the throw was way behind him, which allowed the trailing defender (Ramsay) to get a hand on it where Kittle couldn't. And yes, that's on Jimmy. The decision isn't bad if the throw is accurate, but we've seen this with him where his accuracy is not consistent and it results in these kinds of bad picks. Tom Brady makes the same throws but he's more consistently accurate.
Well, that's fair...but the main criticism of Jimmy G is that in addition to being inconsistent with his accuracy, he's basically a one read QB that pre-determines where he's going with the football before the ball is snapped...part of this is his lack of mobility, and helps to explain why he gets the ball out so quickly.
The nuances of the QB position do escape him - Brady is more consistently accurate, but ALSO processes the game much quicker and better than Garoppolo (no surprise - TB12's the greatest), who rarely works through his progressions. Brady gets to 2nd and 3rd reads far more than Garoppolo, who rarely does.
I forgot about that injury so he gets somewhat of a pass for the Bad Jimmy play.
That second pick was a bad throw but a great juggling catch by Ramsey for the pick.
I’m skeptical Garoppolo is as injured as his camp would like you to believe, and think that thumb injury was more damage control after he schitt the bed in Tennessee on national tv. Remember, he’s due $27M next year if he’s traded...he probably won’t get anything close to that if he’s simply released.

Also Steelers fan at Allegiant Stadium. After seeing that guy in a crowd shot, I was actually rooting for a tie game. A tie would have eliminated the Steelers and put both the Raiders and the Chargers in the playoffs. (or at least that's what the Chronicle claimed).
I was really hoping for a tie. I think the Chargers screwed themselves by calling the TO at the end there.
They should have the last week of the season play all at once, like in the World Cup how the last games for each group are played simultaneously. Maybe play the whole AFC at 4pm ET on Saturday and then do the NFC at 4pm on Sunday. That way, you'd minimize the chance of teams sandbagging.
That's what the MLB did on the last day of the regular season. Prevented the late teams from being able to adjust pitching based on the earlier games.
I really don't think NFL teams actually do sandbag - why would the Lions even want to win if that were the case? Or Jacksonville? Runs against their ethos.
I think one reason you don’t see it is a lot of player contracts are tied to incentives so while they game might not mean much in terms of playoffs, it could mean something financially for the players.
Maybe, but I think the main reason is that it's such a macho, physical and violent game that you view the results as a test of your manhood, or something like that.
My son was all in on the conspiracy theory that the teams would play for a tie - I seriously doubted that, and the teams didn't play like that at all. Fantastically fun game Chargers made 4 4th downs in a row to tie it up.

In OT I think the Chargers were playing for the tie. Not calling TO to stop the clock, except on the last play before the FG. This article makes a good point that the Raiders wanted to win so they wouldn't have to meet the Chiefs. They played it such that the Chargers would never get the ball back. If they hadn't gained 10 yards on the play after the TO, they probably would've kneeled it instead of kicking a 55+ yard FG and possibly having a block returned for a TD or a long, missed FG returned for a TD.

Didn't look that way to me on their drive that ended in the FG, sure when the Raiders had the ball, they might have been HOPING for a tie, but that's not the same thing as PLAYing for a tie.
I think they still attempt the FG even if they didn’t gain another yard. Carson has the leg to kick that distance so the odds of him kicking short and it being returned is low, same with it being blocked.
I was also hoping for the tie but I understand the TO and thought it was the right call. The problem is the Chargers run defense is terrible and I’m sure the defense was tired.

That's just it, the Raiders still tried a fairly conservative run after the time out, it's just that they gained 10 yards and got into field goal range. May as well kick it at that point.
Well the Raiders were already in long FG range. If they didn’t gain another yard it would have been a 57 yard attempt, Carlson has been money all season long and has hit from 56 so I think, other than a penalty or a tackle for a loss the Raiders were going to attempt the FG. The long run just made it an easier attempt.
I think on a 55+ yard field goal you think about the bad things that can happen. The kicker has to get more distance so might try to kick it lower, higher chance of a block, etc. Might not be worth it to kick, when a tie game is perfectly fine for you.
Get it inside 50 yards and it's a more normal kick so you just do it.

I think you have to assume the chances of winning in OT are roughly 50/50 (without knowing the result of the coin toss). The chances of scoring on any given 2 point conversion are lower than that. So in terms of analytics that decision is probably a wash, maybe even slightly favoring the PAT.

classes remote until Jan 31, which makes me think that my on-campus event on Jan 28 might get postponed or cancelled.
I think it'll go longer than that. UCSC wanted students to try to get back by this weekend with online classes going until this coming Friday. With students coming back they had more positives so they went virtual until 1/31. I think they'll see a higher spike and be virtual past 1/31. I guess they're hoping students that stay home get it so they won't get positive later?
on the other hand, our kids went back to in person school today after being home for a week.
