I'd at least go through them if you haven't already...I found a Rickey and a Reggie card from the early '80's that are actually worth something.

But my hopes of a big payday were dashed when I found that I had like 19 Tom Glavine Donruss rookie cards and they were worth about a dollar apiece...I mean, if a 300 game-winning, Hall of Famer's rookie card was worth about a buck, than what's the point in holding on to thousands of Luis Polonia and Pat Sheridan-type cards.

You could also try selling them for whatever you can get...but I'd make sure there's no smoking gun in there first....

Ok. Thanks. These things just take up space. I thought about a having a bonfire just to be done with the stuff, but I would still have the ashes to contend with.

So, it's funny....I spent almost 30 years worrying that my Mom or step-Dad would throw them away, I didn't have the heart to just toss them out myself...even after I went through them and found out they were mostly worthless.

I mean, they're of value to someone...my aunt in Phoenix goes to Goodwill every weekend with her friends - someone like her would buy them...hoarders, baby...

I'm taking this trip down memory lane this weekend! Or at least I'm retrieving the large box that has moved to various locations for 30 years. Some years I'd assumed one of the sets of parents mustve thrown them out by now, but they would turn up somewhere in one or the other's house. The stepmom is finally selling the old house now, and she actually reminded me about them.

Though at some point maybe 25 years ago I decided to isolate the most valuable cards from the larger moving box full and they spent that time in the back of my sock drawer through many moves. They very well could be in my current drawer now, I'd actually have to check, ha.

I collected between 1989-1993, but even then I was more interested in older cards from the 70's and 80's. I would sometimes skip lunch at school for days to save up my lunch money to go buy an old card.

Looking forward to flipping through some of these binders that I havent seen in decades, that I spent so much time curating as a kid, and high stakes trading sessions with friends. Then.. finally stick the box in my own attic for the next x years.

There was something so magical about baseball cards back then that I assume is gone forever, even if they still find away to reinvent and make some profits.

Just had my downstairs bathroom renovated with new granite walls in the shower. It turns out the guys installing the granite let it sit on the edge of the shower floor for too long so the weight of the stuff snapped an old pipe underneath the floor. I found out because water was leaking through the wall into the adjacent room. When the emergency plumber guy came out he pointed out the problem, then when he tried to replaced the drain pipe he found out it is a 1" pipe diameter which has to be special ordered. So it was ordered but because of the supply chain problem there is no ETA. Downstairs shower is out of commission. Aaargghhh.

In three days, I am closing on the my new house. That afternoon, I am building a 4x8' pegboard for my tools, framed by 1x8x8 for shelving. So I'm prepping now. I used the leftover exterior latex trim paint from my current house to paint the shelves. Cheap, cheerful, and functional. I wanted the pegboard to match all my interior doors, which are being painted "storm cloud", so I went to go to the local Sherwin Williams to get a gallon. I'm thinking "I get interior paint sample all the time and they cost only like $10. Let's go exterior paint since it's gotta withstand tools being put on it. " They ring it up. $74. D'oh.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

Paint is surprisingly expensive. We bought Benjamin Moore when doing interior painting back around 2005. Another of or friends had done a whole bunch of testing and research and found it to be the best in terms of look, coverage, etc. Could cover with just 1 coat of paint. At the time it was almost $50/gallon. But I didn't have to do 2 coats so I guess it was worth it. And it did look very nice. I imagine it's probably $100/can now.

There are industry standard sizes holes to install appliances. For refrigerators, the standard is 72" inches high, 36" wide and 25.5" deep. Fridges come in two depths - "counter depth" and "standard depth". There is no industry standard for "standard" depth, apart from it being a bit deeper than 25.5". We own a standard depth one now and it sticks out maybe five inches, which is fine. We ordered a new standard size fridge.

Wife went to go double check that they built the fridge cove big enough. Height and width were good. But she blue taped off how deep it would be, just in case. The fridge jutted out about a foot toward the kitchen island. Add in the room needed to swing open the doors and to stand in front of the fridge, and there's not enough room.

Post-mortem lessons learned: I shouldn't have assumed that all standard fridges are just a few inches bigger than 25.5. New LG standard fridge is 36.25 inches deep. Also, I measured our existing counters. They're 28.5" deep. Wife begged our supplier to swap out the standard for a counter-depth one. Crisis averted, but jeez.

I remember having a width problem when trying to replace our fridge. I don't remember the size but it was maybe 1 inch narrower. I had to replace it and wanted a french door fridge with a pull out freezer below, along with a water/ice dispenser. I only had one option, an LG. And there were a couple of problems with it out of warranty. The freon system leaked so I had to pay like 500 to have it replaced. Found out later that LG fridges have this problem.

Expand full comment
Peetyjay's avatar

We have an LG fridge and LG washer and dryer. All are glitchy. The fridge at one time was spewing water from the dispenser. I unhooked it and a few days later it was working fine. We also had an issue with the defrost in the fridge not working, fan was frozen, had to take everything out and break out the ice to get it working. $0 money spent on the solution, but I am hoping this isn't a problem I have to deal with every 6 months. I will definitely be looking for something other than LG in the future.

Expand full comment

GE fridge here. Last summer it stopped working so the GE guy came out and pointed out that the fan was frozen in a block of ice, also the wall between the fridge and the freezer was frozen. Went out and bought a new top opening freezer from the appliance store and moved stuff into the garage where I put the new freezer. The fridge had to be thawed out for 72 hours before re-starting. Still working but it was a tough few days as the temperatures were in the mid-90's that week.

I was thinking of getting tickets for Pistons/Warriors Tues Jan 18th (I think) for No 3's Christmas present (he couldn't go with us when I took No 1 and 2) and they were only $80 resale. I was thinking that might be Klay's return if he doesn't play on Sunday.

2 novels can change a 14 year old’s life: Lord of the Rings & Atlas Shrugged. One is a fantasy that engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adult, unable to deal with the real world. The other has orcs.

When will Aaron stop disappointing Cal fans?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

When they realize that he’s just a football player, nothing more.

While I may not agree with his politics & vaccination stance, at the end of the day, he’s just a helluva ballplayer that is responsible for some of my most enjoyable Cal football fan experiences, specifically the ‘03 SC & Insight bowl games & the 2004 season.

Personally, I love the guy and don’t give two schitts what book is on his shelf....Cal doesn’t have enough elite NFL ambassadors to vilify him over trivial, stupid schitt.

Plus he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the damn game, and if that helps make good players want to go to Cal, that’s great.

I agree. He is fun to watch and gives me some pride as a Cal fan. I don’t agree with his stance on issues, but he is not a felon.

I do wish he would be more of a Cal ambassador.

The only thing that bothers me about him is when he spouts anti-vax misinformation, which directly contributes to bad public health. I don't give a crap about the books on his shelf.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Again, he's just a football player... possibly the most physically gifted one to ever play the game at that...he's not who people should be turning to for their health advice.

Charles Darwin had a whole theory to describe those who do.

Sure, no one should be listening to him. That doesn't mean I have to like him when he spouts off with that nonsense.

Tedford?

WilderThanGene's avatar

He did give us a new locker room and scholarship in 2019. Things seemed to be on the up and up at that time with Rodgers' approval of Wilcox.

But there could be a permanent rift now. You'd have to think that when he made his "woke mob" comments he did so knowing his former school in large part represents the kind of progressive and liberal thinking he was defensively railing against and wants nothing to do with.

But times change and people change all the time, so who knows..

GB III's avatar

Ehhhh. You might be right. I know it is just entertainment “sports,” but it is still disappointing that one of the better Cal athletes and a star in the “sexiest” of all of the sports can’t/won’t be an ambassador for his school.

Expand full comment

I dont see why it wouldnt, as bureaucratically separate they may be.. There's the larger shared ideals or essence of Cal if you will. "You see a place". (If only a donor would step up now to get us a new commercial)

I think Alpha1024??? said that a few weeks ago too. Cal needs a new/fresh brand. I am part of the older brand, but I agree. It’s time to make a real effort to appeal to the younger fans/students/alumni.

The powers that be should make an attempt to “see a new opportunity.”

Your typical person thinks about coaches doing the recruiting. Guys like Cherrington are the guys that keep in touch on a day-to-day basis, calling, relating with the recruits,... shooting the shit. Kids are funny. If you call less, they think they aren't wanted and they take it personally. While I feel bad that Cherrington doesn't get to stay at his alma mater, I'm glad to have him back.
