Dad used to sprinkle sugar on tomatoes and eat them out of hand (like an apple). No one else in the family found this appetizing.

My Cal roommate seasoned her cottage cheese with soy sauce and shredded carrots. Worked for her.

Something I just learned yesterday: buffalo chicken on a burger

We had a bbq/potluck at the office yesterday. Someone grilled up some burgers but forgot to bring any toppings (not even condiments). Someone else had brought in a crock pot of buffalo chicken. A brave soul dumped a bunch of buffalo chicken on a burger, said it tasted quite good, and voila--a bunch of us enjoyed buffalo chicken burgers.

On this day in 1935 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated St. Mary’s 10-0. The contest was a defensive slog with the teams combining for 30 punts and only 150 yards of total offense. Ken Cotton’s nine yard run in the first quarter provided the game’s only touchdown. This was the third consecutive victory for Cal head coach Stub Allison in his first of ten years as head coach. In his first four seasons in charge the Bears would go a combined 35-7-1 and win the 1938 Rose Bowl. Alas, Stub would not having any winning seasons in any of his last six years at the helm.

Punting is winning

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

No doubt, 30 punts is way beyond the norm in today's game. 30 punts, though, is a small amount compared to the NCAA record for most punts in one game. That record is 77 punts on November 11, 1939, Texas Tech vs Centenary in Shreveport, LA. The final score of the game was a 0-0 tie.

There was bad blood between the two teams from the 1937 contest in which four Centenary players were injured, two requiring hospitalization. The Texas Tech captain was ejected for "seeking to use his fist," as the Shreveport Times reported.

Days of rain prior to the game had made the field a soggy mess. To make matters worse, the rain didn't let up on that Saturday. Trying to move the ball forward in such conditions risked losing yardage and ultimately field position.

So, the teams traded punt after punt, opting to attempt to gain yardage only 33 times in 85 possessions.

All of the foregoing is but a mere summary. For a better description, see this article from The Athletic here - https://theathletic.com/2917111/2021/10/28/the-worst-college-football-game-ever-77-punts-33-plays-and-the-growing-legend-of-a-record-setting-0-0-tie/

A lot is relative.

ESPN - The site is unreadable, full of ads (sketchy eye candy), and most articles are ESPN+ only. The only reason I’d get up at 6 am on Saturdays was to watch GameDay. As soon as they introduced Pat McAfee I could tell they were going after the Barstool audience/ demographic. And now he’s in the center seat! The rest of the guys look like they’re doing their best to tolerate him for 3 hrs. 🙄. No wonder Disney’s trying to unload it.
