DBD logistics - y'all gotta post on Friday. I'll be in the Boston Area, touring Salem and then returning to North Boston for dinner at Carmelina's and then having four or five cannoli from Modern Pastry. TIL: the singular for cannoli is cannolo.
Felt it in a 100+-year-old building. Funny thing was that about an hour before it hit, I was talking with a coworker and she said that if an earthquake hit while she was in the building, her only plan is to make peace with her God. I blame her for the earthquake.
I've been a MD resident for 8 years now, and I still find myself instinctively thinking "that's going to fall if an earthquake hits" when putting stuff high up on shelves or when putting up frames. I guess old habits die hard
Our trusty F150 refused to pass the smog test. Twice. Even after we gave it a significant amount ($) of TLC, the check engine light refused to go away. Unfortunately we don’t have a ranch to set it out to pasture so we handed title over to a charity auction. Proceeds go to our local humane society / spca.
The missus is on the market for a new car since her Mini is getting too small for our family. About three years ago the new car shortage was easing, so I expect the market will start to flood with off-lease used cars over the next several months. Over the last few months I've already noticed a huge price drop (~$3-4k) in lightly used (<10k miles) Acura RDXs, the missus' current top choice.
I'd like to get one last, exciting ICE car before electrics take over, but I don't think I'll be on the market until Cf98 starts kindergarten in a couple years. I don't want another car payment on top of preschool tuition.
We should probably be thinking about replacing the '15 Odyssey (only 90k miles but lots of creaks and more worryingly some odd shifts from the transmission), but the missus is not a fan of "everything controlled from a screen" so I suspect we'll just let that bad boy roll until she and the girls are finished in Vermont next summer.
I just ordered fresh tires for my Civic because I can't find anything that I'd be interested in driving at an age / pricepoint I find agreeable. Considering I mostly just bumble around town (and it's a '16 with 43k miles), I can't quite bring myself to take on a note for a little more entertainment.
I just got new tires for the Miata. When the last set needed to be replaced, I was going to get new wheels and lowering springs. Alas, 2K+ per month rent for No 3 in Santa Cruz meant just new tires.
Imagine what would happen if the fault decided to get active in the 43rd minute, a result of all the fans jumping up and down. Its not like Cal games prepare the ground beneath for the effect of thousands of engaged fans.
Not shocking: RFK Jr is pulling more Trump voters than Biden voters.
Shocker: RFK Jr is pulling in 16 points (!). 10 points from Trump voters and about 5 from Biden voters. This is versus 44 points for Biden and 37% for Trump.

We did the same with the previous generation of Google's Nest routers a couple years ago. Massive improvement in speed and coverage. Now I get consistent, fast coverage pretty much anywhere within our property line
I think Merle Haggard wrote and performed a song about a friend of his drowning in the Kern River.
Wife's maiden name is Keirn, pronounced the same way, but our research suggests it's closer in origin to the Gaelic word for a burial mound of rocks, a cairn.
Because my older daughter has no interest in sports she was completely unaware about the demise of the Pac12 and is now deeply concerned about the fates of Oregon State and Washington Stat; as an extrovert she's emotionally vulnerable to stories about people being abandoned.
She has no idea what sport-based pain is. It is noted as being one of the deadliest poisons known to man. It has no odor, no taste, and will dissolve instantly when poured into liquid. We Cal fans have all built up tolerance by ingesting trace amounts every week.
Remember how #15 Oregon smashed FCS Portland State 81-7? And then FCS Portland State turned around and smashed NAIA-level North American University (NAU) 91-0, with the latter having negative 23 yards on offense. NAU did it again. They lost to NAIA Louisiana Christian, which has an enrollment of under 1,000 students 55-0 and had negative 25 yards on offense. Louisiana Christian was merciful in the fourth quarter - declining penalties and running the ball every time including 4th and 14.
I had to look into the stats and drive charts because that looks too weird. Turns out Texas College went 2-8 on 4th down (hi, Dan Lanning!) and had several special teams fiascoes, including letting NAU return a punt for a TD. NAU had consecutive 2nd Q TD drives starting inside the TC 35 thanks to a 32-yard punt return and TC's failed 4th and 5 from their own 31.
Another wild stat: TC had 6 red zone opportunities to NAU's 1.
Do Knowltons notes piss anyone else off every damn time? I really wish he just would resign and just go back to Colorado Springs. He’s destroying the athletic department.
Another week of NFL games and another terrific performance by former No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Jared Goff led former Cal football players in Week 6 of the 2023 NFL campaign. Goff completed 30-of-44 passes for 353 yards to establish season highs in all three categories, while throwing for two touchdowns without an interception for a 107.5 quarterback rating.
STANFORD – Hannah Viller Moeller closed the ITA Northwest Regional Championships with a flourish when she captured the singles title and – with Mao Mushika – the doubles title Tuesday at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears defeated teammates Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm in the doubles final, after Viller Moeller dispatched the Cardinal's Connie Ma in singles.
All four Bears qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships in November by reaching the doubles final. Viller Moeller also qualified for fall nationals in singles.
BERKELEY – California sixth-year linebacker Jackson Sirmon was named to the midseason watch list for the Lombardi Award™ on Tuesday. The Lombardi Award™ goes annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the character and discipline of Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach Vince Lombardi in addition to outstanding performance and ability.
The selection criteria allow for linemen setting up no further than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball at the time of snap and linebackers setting up no further than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage to be eligible for the honor.
The No. 2 California men's water polo team closes out its 2023 nonconference schedule with five home games in three days this week at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Playing without two-time reigning national player of the year Nikolaos Papanikolaou over their past three games, the Golden Bears went 1-2 against top-three teams, falling in close games to No. 1 UCLA and No. 3 Stanford and coming back from a three-goal second-half deficit to defeat then-No. 3 USC 10-9 on Oct. 8. Cal has met just one of this week's five visiting opponents so far this season, defeating No. 8 Long Beach State 10-6 in the Overnght MPSF Invitational quarterfinals back on Sept. 23.
BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team returns to Pac-12 Conference play when the 5-4-3 (1-2-1 Pac-12) Golden Bears travel to the Pacific Northwest to play Washington and Oregon State.
BERKELEY- The California women's soccer team closes out its regular season home schedule this week with a pair of matches at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (5-3-6, 2-0-4 Pac-12) host Oregon (0-12-2, 0-6-0) on Thursday at 2 p.m. before facing Oregon State (3-6-5, 0-4-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
BERKELEY – The complete California women's basketball 2023-24 season schedule was finalized as the Pac-12 Conference released the 2023-24 conference slate with dates, times and TV designations Tuesday.
The Golden Bears will play a home exhibition game against Westmont on Nov. 2 before tipping off the 2023-24 regular season with a matchup against Cal State Bakersfield on Nov. 6 at Haas Pavilion.
Psyched for the season. I think it's make or break for head coach Charmin Smith. Then again with Knowlton as AD she could go winless and get a contract extension.
On this day in 1947 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State, 21-6. The victory raised Cal’s record to 5-0 under first year coach, Pappy Waldorf. The heavily-favored Bears struggled to put the Cougars away despite recovering five first half Wazzu fumbles. The hosts’ last TD came on an 82-yard pick six by right end John Cunningham. Waldorf said after the game, “it’s nice to play that lousy and still win. And we sure loused up the joint today. The boys…played logey, dull stupid football.” The sturdy Golden Ones would finish the season at 9-1. Their only defeat coming the following week against U$C. (Also on this day my older brother was born.)

Earthquake
Got the alert at 9:30 AM this morning, and waited for some shaking as I was in a hallway. But nothing. And still nothing.
Yeah, didn't feel it in South Monterey Bay. It was centered on Bethel Island in the Delta.
Felt it in a 100+-year-old building. Funny thing was that about an hour before it hit, I was talking with a coworker and she said that if an earthquake hit while she was in the building, her only plan is to make peace with her God. I blame her for the earthquake.

I've been on the east coast since 1992 and I still get uneasy about things like shelves above headboards on beds.
I didn't feel it but got the alert. Someone on the call that was presenting also mentioned he got the alert.
