Earthquake

Expand full comment

Got the alert at 9:30 AM this morning, and waited for some shaking as I was in a hallway. But nothing. And still nothing.

Yeah, didn't feel it in South Monterey Bay. It was centered on Bethel Island in the Delta.

Felt it in a 100+-year-old building. Funny thing was that about an hour before it hit, I was talking with a coworker and she said that if an earthquake hit while she was in the building, her only plan is to make peace with her God. I blame her for the earthquake.

The missus is on the market for a new car since her Mini is getting too small for our family. About three years ago the new car shortage was easing, so I expect the market will start to flood with off-lease used cars over the next several months. Over the last few months I've already noticed a huge price drop (~$3-4k) in lightly used (<10k miles) Acura RDXs, the missus' current top choice.

I'd like to get one last, exciting ICE car before electrics take over, but I don't think I'll be on the market until Cf98 starts kindergarten in a couple years. I don't want another car payment on top of preschool tuition.

Expand full comment

We should probably be thinking about replacing the '15 Odyssey (only 90k miles but lots of creaks and more worryingly some odd shifts from the transmission), but the missus is not a fan of "everything controlled from a screen" so I suspect we'll just let that bad boy roll until she and the girls are finished in Vermont next summer.

I just ordered fresh tires for my Civic because I can't find anything that I'd be interested in driving at an age / pricepoint I find agreeable. Considering I mostly just bumble around town (and it's a '16 with 43k miles), I can't quite bring myself to take on a note for a little more entertainment.

Remember how #15 Oregon smashed FCS Portland State 81-7? And then FCS Portland State turned around and smashed NAIA-level North American University (NAU) 91-0, with the latter having negative 23 yards on offense. NAU did it again. They lost to NAIA Louisiana Christian, which has an enrollment of under 1,000 students 55-0 and had negative 25 yards on offense. Louisiana Christian was merciful in the fourth quarter - declining penalties and running the ball every time including 4th and 14.

I had to look into the stats and drive charts because that looks too weird. Turns out Texas College went 2-8 on 4th down (hi, Dan Lanning!) and had several special teams fiascoes, including letting NAU return a punt for a TD. NAU had consecutive 2nd Q TD drives starting inside the TC 35 thanks to a 32-yard punt return and TC's failed 4th and 5 from their own 31.

Another wild stat: TC had 6 red zone opportunities to NAU's 1.

On this day in 1947 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State, 21-6. The victory raised Cal’s record to 5-0 under first year coach, Pappy Waldorf. The heavily-favored Bears struggled to put the Cougars away despite recovering five first half Wazzu fumbles. The hosts’ last TD came on an 82-yard pick six by right end John Cunningham. Waldorf said after the game, “it’s nice to play that lousy and still win. And we sure loused up the joint today. The boys…played logey, dull stupid football.” The sturdy Golden Ones would finish the season at 9-1. Their only defeat coming the following week against U$C.
